Art is the wine barrel fermented and aged version of Arthur (1922-2005), our grandfather's youngest brother as well as the name of our rustic farmstead ale. In honor of Arthur, we mindfully blend his namesake beer from French oak wine barrels that have been aged and conditioned for between 1 and 3 years. This is the standard that reflects, redefines and guides the progressive vision for Hill Farmstead.

Initially art has a two finger soapy head, but that changes quickly. Poor retention and no lacing. Pretty color that is honey golden and completely clear. Soft aroma of brett, hay, grass and lemon-y funk. Damp wood or oak presence. Complex flavor combining some brett funk, lemon, and fruity flavors hiding beneth the stronger ones. Very grassy and contains light lactic sour hits up front. Can't say I am picking up any barrel or vinous flavors from the aging. A good prickly carbonation with a slight lemon tart hit on the tip of the tongue. A beer that is truly enjoyable though I am beginning to wonder about the wisdom of categorizing beers such as these as Saisons. The combination of brett and oak change the beer so much.

Perfect slighly hazy golden color. Was extremely active in the bottle before pouring. The smell was pleasantly funky and tart...you can smell it the second it pours. The taste blew me away...zero flaws as far as I'm concerned. Everything good about Arthur with the added complexity and tartness from the wine barrels. Even has a bit of vanilla flavor in the aftertaste which was very nice. Less carbed than I was expecting and that's not a bad thing...almost creamy, which I didn't expect either but I really really enjoy. This may just be the best beer I've ever had. Wish I could drink this every day.

T: same as nose plus french oak. Tart with a hint of sweetness in the finish.
This is the best beer that I have ever tasted

World class saison with wonderful carb. Tartness of a green apple with a crisp dryness that really invites additional drinks. The smell is funky, Bretty, and lightly fruity. Impeccable balance and crispness. Fantastic beer.

On-tap at 2012 Hill Farmstead Harvest Fest.

Pours a cloudy light yellow with a foamy white head. Nice lacing.

Aroma is slight sour white grapes with light vinegar.

Upfront taste is moderately sour, vinegar, unripe grapes. Sourness follows through to the finish. Fruity esters linger while the sourness gradually diminishes.

Moderate/lighter body with high carbonation that fits the beer well.

Overall very enjoyable. Reminds me a bit of St. Lamvinus, but with a different style grape.

Latest rating of batch 3, which I enjoyed more so than 2 (which I also loved). The barrel flavor and acidity balance on this is just an unparalleled treat. Soft mouthfeel, bright, refreshing, with a nice tinge of tart on the finish.

Bottle poured in a GI tulip

A - Hazy, golden color with a very frothy two finger head. This leaves a lot of nice lacing as it goes down. Quite a nice looking Saison.

S - Smells of sweet banana, lemon, oak, slight vinegar and a slight grassy farmhouse funk

T - Initally tart lemon and slight vinegar come through. As the beer goes, the beer starts to get funky with grass, farmhouse funk and a slight blue cheese. The finish is slightly tart with a lingering oak.

MF - Medium carbonation with a creamy smooth body. Slightly astringent in the finish and a tingle remains on the tongue.

O - Solid, sour and funky Saison that reminds me of a more tart version of Orval. My first HF Saison and can understand why people get excited over them.

My second HF beer. The first beer Rarl was terrific. This one was rather ordinary. Funky saison yeast. Generous retained head on hazy golden coloured body. Above average mouthfeel. Funky, yeasty taste, pepper. Dry bitter finish. Decent drinkability but it took many sips. Thanks Steve S.

750ml bottle into a Cantillon tulip. Bit of a slow gusher. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a massive, 3 finger foamy white head with excellent retention. Beer is clear goldenrod. Lacing is patchy and thick with excellent cling. Couldn't ask for more.

Nose is yeast, band-aid, lemon rind, coriander, flower petals and a slight tartness. Aromatic with big funk notes. Clean, crisp and very refreshing with the exact flavors I expect from the style.

Opens slightly tart citrus and lemon peel. Coriander and other spices in the back along with some floral notes. Touch of yeastiness at the middle with band-aid and cobweb. Spicy finish with a yeasty and sharply funky aftertaste. Refreshing and very complex. Really enjoyable.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Light, fluffy and clean in the mouth and goes down refreshing. Accented finish with a mellow aftertaste. Really solid.

Hill Farmstead's Saison's are almost on the same level as their pale ales... that is, world class. Art is no different. A super solid beer all the way around. Definitely recommended.
