E is definitely not a Belgian IPA - it's a funky version of Edward (american pale ale) - fermented with brettanomyces, dry hopped with galaxy, and aged on stainless for four months. Basically, we refer to it as a farmhouse pale ale - a cross between a saison and an american pale.

2012 Release: Aged in Mimosa barrels.
2014 Release: Aged in wine barrels with resident yeast and microfloa for 1.5 years.

Lemon, crisp, earthy. Very light Guezue like flavor on the back end. Super short, dry finish. Really wish I drank this fresh. Getting no hops except in the aroma.

2014 Vintage
Not among my favorite Hill Farmstead beers, but this is still a really nice Saison. Great mouthfeel; light, crisp, lively, and dry. Pleasantly musty aroma with pepper and tropical fruits from the Galaxy hops, tho I'm sure this has faded a bit by now since bottling. Taste is oaky, bitter, and citrusy with a strong floral/grassy bite. Wish I'd had a fresh one to compare it to. A good compliment to a funky Stilton and some terrine.

A- pale orange hue with solid lacing
S- brett-sour, funk and citrus, apricot with some oak notes.
T- dry, oak, apricot and funky finish.
M- moderate carbonation and body
O- a refined balanced Brett and pale ale blend; delicious.

A-Cloudy pale orange, two finger head that leaves nice lacing.

S-Oak, white wine, lemon and grass. tart notes yeast and wheat.

T-Very white wine flavor, oak as well, nice tart notes, oranges, lemon and grass.

M-Lighter drier finish, nice carbonation.

O-Didn't get much of the hop flavor but still a good beer.

Hazed pale orange colour, one finger of white head, good lace. Smell is musty and bretty, funk and citrus, well hopped, orange, peach and apricot with some oak as well. Taste is dry and oaky, fruity as well, apricot, fuzzy peach rings, nice hoppy/funky finish. Medium carbonation, medium-full body. Really solid stuff, another incredible offering from these guys.

Poured from a 750ml bottle purchased after the release in spring of 2014.
Smell is floral, grassy, banana, citrus fruits.
Taste is slightly tart, you get some banana/Belgian yeastiness. White wine, lemon, dankiness.
Mouthfeel tart, sour, acidic.
Overall, an interesting farmhouse/saison from HF. Of course they knock it out of the park on this one. Worth the $20 I spent.

The beer is light orange and hazy with a white head. Aromas include wine, honey, grass, sunshine, citrus. Smells great. Similar flavor. lemons and grass with citrus and floral notes. Medium bodied and tangy. Another fabulous saison from Hill Farmstead.

Huge thanks to Tom10101 for picking up and sending out this huge want.

A: Copper yellow haze topped with 3 fingers of white foam and settles down to a single layer across the glass. Streams of carbonation race to the top, suggesting a snappy carbonation.

S: Lemony dank basement with muskiness, yeasts and wheatiness topped with some minerals. Finish is a little acid and as it warms some notes of under ripe banana.

T: Lemony acidity with sourness of grape skins and brett funk. Wheaty notes with medical herbal notes and chalky minerals.

M: Light to medium bodied with a soft carbonation combined with light crisp tartness.

O: A refreshing and tangy drink grounded with funkiness and wheat. Light and refreshing it holds nothing back in the tart and sour department and never plays down to a crowd looking for something sweet. Bold and assertive.

750ml bottle with silver pressure cap. Vintage 2014.

poured into a pair of HF wine stems.

Appearance: light orange bodied beer with 3 fingers of white head that slowely drops down to thick cap. Great staying power on the head with thick yet spotty lacing left on the glass.

Smell: This one is modertely funky. Lots of white wine barrel notes that are overpowered by the funk. Fruity hops with low bitter aroma.

Taste: Moderate funkiness. Surprisingly enough the white wine notes are not very strong compared to the nose. Light tannins and white grape. Lite bitterness from the hops. Musty and rotten hay.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. As this beer warms up it seems to get watery, but still pretty solid mouthfeel.

Overall: This is my first wine barrel aged pale ale. It was done in true HF style and its a great beer. Unique and different!

750ml bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead stemmed glass 5/31/2014.

A- Hazy bright copper-orange body, half finger white head with good retention, lots of sticky lacing. Looks a lot like Edward. And I find it interesting that the colour of the body even matches the colour on the label.

S- Lots of fruity Galaxy hops and a nice lemony brett presence. Grapefruit, citrus, tangerines and lemons. Smells great. A bit of bready pale ale presence, and I definitely recognize the nose of Edward here.

F- More of the bready base pale malt with citrus, tangerines and a floral presence reminding me a lot of Edward, but accompanied by quite a bit of lemony brett flavours, a bit of funk, mixed in with a nice dry hop presence bringing more juicy citrus. Not tart at all like the other saisons that Shaun brews. There is a nice white wine barrel presence throughout as well. Nice and delicious, but again, not tart or sour.

M- Medium body, just about right in terms of body and carbonation. A lot similar to Edward in that the mouthfeel is soft with a nice citrus lemony presence, presumably from the brett. Nice and dry, refreshing.

O- If this is a Belgian IPA, this kills anything else of the style. As a saison, I prefer the likes of Arthur and Anna to this, but I'm very glad to have tried this one. Whatever it may be, it's certainly a nice creation from Hill and Co.

Pours a murky golden-orange with a rocky, one-inch, off-white head embedded with tiny craters. Big brett nose on this beer - horse blanket, bandaids and a hint of citrus. Taste follows nose; however, there's less of a brett character in the flavor profile. There's also a bit more citrus as well as what I perceive to be chamomile. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a soft carbonation and some astringency. Overall, a decent beer; however, the brett is a bit too much on the palate.

From 05/19/14 notes. A refreshing break from stouts during our BCS mega-tasting. 2014 release. 750ml bottle poured into my Lost Abby stemware.

a - Pours a hazy golden-orange color with one finger of fluffy off white head and high carbonation evident. Looks nice.

s - The nose is amazing. Smells of loads of brett, citrus hops, pineapples, earthy notes, floral hops, oranges, white wine, tart citrus and tart jams. Amazing nose, I'm loving it.

t - Tastes of brett, citrus hops, fruity malts, light pepper and spice, light tropical fruits, lightly soured fruits and white wine, oak, and earthy malts. Taste is very good, though not as great as the nose.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Crisp and refreshing, very easy to drink.

o - Overall a very good beer; I love Edward and this might be even better. Lots of brett, citrus, and tropical notes in the nose which is fantastic, and it is easy to drink. I could smell this all day, worth seeking out.

750ml 2014 bottle into a teku glass

dark murky golden color with a finger and half foamy head. smell of farmhouse yeast... you can definitely tell this was aged in wine barrels. funky funky funky! taste starts out with a lot of brett and then progresses into that funky farmhouse taste and ends with a slight bitterness. wine barrel is again apparent. i think this would just get better with more age. real complex and interesting. body is much lighter than i was expecting and i love it. carbonation is pretty high.

This beer poured cloudy and murky the color of grapefruit juice and had a big head with good retention and lace. It was definitely my least favorite beer form Hill Farmstead. This beer has a mellow smoothness from the aging in oak, a prominent woody flavor and one heck of a sharp hop bitter in the finish. The fruit flavors were also mellowed in the drink but luckily it still had some juicy tartness. Bone dry. I think the bitter does eclipse the fruitiness and the pepper in the finish. As it drank the bitter became unconscionable. The mouthfeel of the beer was uncomfortably dry and powdery. It had a dominant floral rather than a fruitiness. Some orange peeks out as it warms but it's mostly lemony. It's ok but my favorite is Edward.

2014 release

Pours a hazy orange with a nice one finger bubbly head. Dissolves down to some bubbles clinging to the side of the tulip glass. Smell is sour and citrusy, with some nice funk/Brett. Starting to pick up some sour grapes and green apple, as well. Really juicy. The taste is somewhat mellow compared to the smell. Much smoother than I was expecting. Not overly sour, also not as juicy. Still some slight citrus flavor. Very earthy. Sharp bitterness towards the end. The Belgian yeast shows through and the oak barrels are in there some where. Medium mouthfeel with just enough carbonation to be bubbly, not overwhelming, though. It's a pretty easy drinker. As the glass warmed up, the orange flavor came out more, too.

750 mL bottle poured into a tumbler.

Appearance - Not sure if I should rate its appearance well. It's a hazy orange with a huge off white head. It slowly oozes out of the bottle pushing gunky crap with it. Sticky lacing.

Smell - Extremely bretty, but lots of flavor behind it. Still some hops there. Lots of citrus.

Taste - Earthy and very bretty. Mimics the nose almost identically. Citrus more prominent. Lots of earthiness in the finish. Slight bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Well carbonated but not overly so.

Overall - Arguably better than Mimosa. Has more complexity than Mimosa because of the fresh hop character.

A - Pours a cloudy, opaque, cloudy golden tan color and a massive three fingered, creamy head that sticks to the glass like glue and cotton candy. The head eventually subsides but stays rocky and creamy across the top.

S - Bready, light earthiness, light fruitiness, sweet floral with lemon bitterness.

T - Brett, barnyard funk, earthy, sour, funky lemon, light grass, bready, tart.

M - Medium body.

O - Tastes far better than it looks!

A~ hazy golden copper with crazy huge head and lots of lacing.

S~ peppery, citrus, and lots of bready yeast. just like a great saison should smell!

T~ more hop bitterness up front then i was expecting, definitely a nice treat. followed by a lot of lemon/lime citrus, a tad orange. nice pepper and tartness on the finish. mmm..!

M~ very carbonated but not overly so. you can kind of feel the bitterness from the hops if that makes sense lol

O~ definitely different then most HF saisons i've had but i'm gonna blame that on the hops! in a good way of course =] i love how HF saisons get sour with a little age, this one especially!

I decided to drink a whole bottle of this tonight. Second time I'm having E., first time I'm reviewing it. 2012 vintage, I bought it at the brewery last August.

A- Like most beers that I've had by Hill Farmstead, it has quite the head on it. Not nearly as much as the first time I had this, but I still had to pour pretty slowly to minimize it. It's a bit cloudy, and golden-orange in color.

S- Smells delicious. The first scent I get is peach to be honest, followed by orange and more citrusy fruits. The aroma has some hops to it as well, but they have definitely died down in the 7 or so months this had been aging. It has a nice floral scent as well, like fresh picked flowers almost. Just a great, sweet aroma.

T- It has more hops to it than I initially thought it would, but once that dies down that fruitiness really comes in. Peach, pineapple, orange, and those are just to name a few. It's slightly tart, but I definitely would not consider this a sour. It definitely is not as sour as most of their other saisons.

M- Loads of carbonation on this one. It almost slightly gets in the way of the flavor because there is so much happening on your tongue.

O- This is just another amazing saison by Hill Farmstead. They are by far one of my favorite breweries, if not my absolute favorite. I have to admit that the first time I had E. I wasn't overly impressed with it, but it really has aged nicely. It's my least favorite saison by Hill Farmstead, and I'm still giving it a great rating. Goes to show how good their stuff is. I'm going to finish this one, Happy Easter everyone and God Bless.

Pours out a compilation of golden and yellow tones with some lighters straw hints around the edges. Super volatile pour, even being somewhat conservative creates a head that grows thicker than the amount of beer that's been poured already; eggshell-white, cloudy, and foamy, leaving huge chunks of lacing as it slowly recedes.

I bring E. up to my face and I'm met with a huge bouquet of roses; the aroma is largely floral, comprised of fresh, wet roses and bitter grassy notes. The hops are clearly the key component in this one. Successive whiffs reveal a more refined hop character, rounded out with tones of earth, dirt, and musk. Light hints of funk and wet wood (as well as some of the musk) is probably from the brett yeast used. There isn't much to be said in terms of malt, at least as far as the aroma is concerned. The hop profile here is certainly different - one of the most purely, raw, floral things I've smelled in quite some time. Very, very light tropical fruit and citrus peek in more and more with each sniff - maybe apple skins and/or pears?

I take my first swig of E. and I'm not sure if I just drank a beer or if I ate a flower and a handful of grass. There should be no surprise, however, as the aroma was largely floral and grassy. The vegetal notes are pretty huge on this one; grass, roses, and perfume. The hops are raw and dirty, giving off a very weedy, grassy, and bitter tone. They must have used a ton of bittering hops on this one - the bitterness charges in, rides the wave hard, and doesn't come close to being settled by the end. I would have like more aromatics to accompany this dry, leafy bitterness. A mild citrus zest sits quiet in the background, but never jumps out and strong as I was hoping for. There's a heavy bit of funk and wet oak in the aftertaste - hard to pick it up throughout the sip, as the hop notes are so profound. Medium bodied, heavily carbonated.

Hm... I don't love E. like the scores and reviews said I would. Listening to others describe it, it definitely sounds like something right up my alley. Don't get me wrong - it was a good beer, but I guess from the way people talk about HF, I was possibly expecting a bit too much. I like the funk and oak in the end, but the bittering hops just don't make my palate dance like they should. Either way, still a solid brew, but likely nothing I'll seek out again.

This is a bit of a gusher, and pours with a massive head. Head sticks around forever and leaves huge sticky lacing all over the glass. Looks awesome.

Smells of bright citrus, orange and grapefruit, some bretty funk. Really great, complex aroma.

Taste is similar but a little more tame. Wish I could've tried this when it was really fresh, probably would have been even better with a more pronounced hop character.

Great beer, one of the best of the HF beers we opened.

Thanks to millerbuffoon for opening this one last night. This bottle was alive, lots of foam spewing from the top of the bottle. Even with a gentle pour this beer has a massive white head on top of a cloudy yellow body. The smell of the beer is very good, it smells sour but holds the base malt aromas as well. It's pretty impressive honestly. The taste of the beer isn't really sour at all. The beer tastes a lot cleaner than it looks. The mouthfeel has a pretty active carbonation to it with a lighter body. Overall this beer is good, not something I would seek out for myself in the future but I enjoyed having it.

Bottle: Poured a hazy pale yellow color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some excellent lacing. Aroma consists of pungent herbal hops with loads of funky notes and some rustic malt also discernable. Taste is a unique and funky mix between some herbal and floral hops with pungent notes with some rustic malt and light residual sugar notes. Brett is well dosed and hard to distinguish. Body is full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. This beer made for a very nice Christmas eve treat.

Serious gusher alert!

Appearance: Pours a murky dull orange with a massive 3 finger white crown composed of tight and fine carbonation bubbles. Moderate retention and lots of lace.

Smell: Definitely my favorite aspect of this brew. Mango, apricot, peach, lemon, grapefruit, passion fruit, and belgian esters.

Taste: Has most of the same notes the nose possesses, but they blend to the point where they are harder to pick out individually. The overly carbonated mouthfeel also makes picking them out more difficult.

Mouthfeel: Thin side of medium bodied with ample carbonation. The carbonation is so velvety smooth but its simply over carbonated to the point where it takes away from both the flavor and the mouthfeel.

Overall: I really really like this beer and think its one that Hill Farmstead could really dial in and improve upon in the future.
