E is definitely not a Belgian IPA - it's a funky version of Edward (american pale ale) - fermented with brettanomyces, dry hopped with galaxy, and aged on stainless for four months. Basically, we refer to it as a farmhouse pale ale - a cross between a saison and an american pale.

2012 Release: Aged in Mimosa barrels.
2014 Release: Aged in wine barrels with resident yeast and microfloa for 1.5 years.

Opened 2/16/2013.

This is a bit of a gusher, and pours with a massive head. Head sticks around forever and leaves huge sticky lacing all over the glass. Looks awesome.

Smells of bright citrus, orange and grapefruit, some bretty funk. Really great, complex aroma.

Taste is similar but a little more tame. Wish I could've tried this when it was really fresh, probably would have been even better with a more pronounced hop character.

Great beer, one of the best of the HF beers we opened.

Hazed pale orange colour, one finger of white head, good lace. Smell is musty and bretty, funk and citrus, well hopped, orange, peach and apricot with some oak as well. Taste is dry and oaky, fruity as well, apricot, fuzzy peach rings, nice hoppy/funky finish. Medium carbonation, medium-full body. Really solid stuff, another incredible offering from these guys. (400 characters)

I decided to drink a whole bottle of this tonight. Second time I'm having E., first time I'm reviewing it. 2012 vintage, I bought it at the brewery last August.

A- Like most beers that I've had by Hill Farmstead, it has quite the head on it. Not nearly as much as the first time I had this, but I still had to pour pretty slowly to minimize it. It's a bit cloudy, and golden-orange in color.

S- Smells delicious. The first scent I get is peach to be honest, followed by orange and more citrusy fruits. The aroma has some hops to it as well, but they have definitely died down in the 7 or so months this had been aging. It has a nice floral scent as well, like fresh picked flowers almost. Just a great, sweet aroma.

T- It has more hops to it than I initially thought it would, but once that dies down that fruitiness really comes in. Peach, pineapple, orange, and those are just to name a few. It's slightly tart, but I definitely would not consider this a sour. It definitely is not as sour as most of their other saisons.

M- Loads of carbonation on this one. It almost slightly gets in the way of the flavor because there is so much happening on your tongue.

O- This is just another amazing saison by Hill Farmstead. They are by far one of my favorite breweries, if not my absolute favorite. I have to admit that the first time I had E. I wasn't overly impressed with it, but it really has aged nicely. It's my least favorite saison by Hill Farmstead, and I'm still giving it a great rating. Goes to show how good their stuff is. Aromas begin with a substantial amount of tropical fruit and other lighter fruits like green apple and grape skin. Next I get the yeast induced aromas of earth and light spice along with a clean light crackery, pilsner malt base. The Bretty must and funk emerges more and more as it warms.

The tastes follow the nose with light crackery breadiness and then some earthy, slightly musty and funky yeast flavors. The tropical and citrus fruit hops pop next with some passionfruit and lemon and orange peel. Some phenolic spiciness with light sour citrus and other non-discript fruitiness. The oak and rustic funk emerges more as it warms as well.

The mouthfeel is medium boided with medium carbonation. Finish is lighly dry and oaky but mainly clean for the most part with balanced funk and hop bitterness as well.

Overall I really enjoyed this beer, I wonder what it was like when it was released fresh as the hops were probably super aromatic where here they are more of a complement to the Bretty and funk but now the Brett is probably better than it was earlier this year. A fine line for sure but regardless this was a super solid beer from Hill Farmstead and would gladly revisit if it was more readily available or even easier to trade for. (1,247 characters)

Picked up a bottle of this at Hill Farmstead last month. Poured into a Duvel tulip. Its worth noting this years was aged in the Mimosa barrels!

A - This one was a slow gusher, resulting in both glasses I poured into but after some time I got enough to pour into my Duvel tulip. The pour was a hazy, murky golden dandelion yellow with a nice two finger rocky fluffy head that leaves enormous side lacing.

S - Nice typical Hill Farmstead saison aromas here with good yeast and light funk. There is a slight, gentle orange note in the background along with some barrel note. Super faint and light. Some slight sourness there too.

T - Taste is awesome. Great saison yeast notes and barnyard type funk. That is immediately overtaken by sharp orange peel type acidity. That background is orangejuicey, much like Mimosa. Such a different quality in a saison. Juicey, acidic, with a heavy funk/yeast background.

M - Mouthfeel isnt bad, some carbonation loss due to the fact it was a slow gusher. Still, lowerish carbonation with that tart, acidic backing. Nice mouthfeel though, would like a little more carbonation. (1,112 characters)

First beer of the day (like most other people it seemed) at the anniversary party.

Light golden colored, hazy body with a massive, dense rocky bone white head. Head takes forever to die down and leaves behind airy clumps of lacing throughout the glass. Aroma is light and delicate blend of barnyard and fruit. Initially muted earthy notes of grass, hay and brett subtly mix with apple, orange and citrus peel. Flavor takes a similar route, initially grassy and subtly funky before light citrus and spice clean up the finish. Trace bitterness or alcohol, this was very refreshing and almost sleight to a fault. Oops, tastes like someone got some Orval in my Dupont. (665 characters)

Poured clear copper color with a large frothy off-white head that was lasting with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy sweet malt, brett, earthy leaves aroma. Medium to full body with a slick dry texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sour & bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy sour & bitter finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where exceeded with a standout change of pace brew. (409 characters)

Pours a huge and hazy dark orange color. Huge fluffy head. Nice retention. The aroma is nearly brilliant. Bubble gum, yeast, citrus, nuts lemon, and sweet orange. Sweet citrus on the taste, some lemon, citrus hops, light malts, bubblegum, and some breads. The feel is lik, crisp and carbonated.

This is an epicly enigue farmhouse ale. Lovein' it! (348 characters)

The beer is light orange and hazy with a white head. Aromas include wine, honey, grass, sunshine, citrus. Smells great. Similar flavor. lemons and grass with citrus and floral notes. Medium bodied and tangy. Another fabulous saison from Hill Farmstead. (300 characters)

2014 release

Pours a hazy orange with a nice one finger bubbly head. Dissolves down to some bubbles clinging to the side of the tulip glass. Smell is sour and citrusy, with some nice funk/Brett. Starting to pick up some sour grapes and green apple, as well. Really juicy. The taste is somewhat mellow compared to the smell. Much smoother than I was expecting. Not overly sour, also not as juicy. Still some slight citrus flavor. Very earthy. Sharp bitterness towards the end. The Belgian yeast shows through and the oak barrels are in there some where. Medium mouthfeel with just enough carbonation to be bubbly, not overwhelming, though. It's a pretty easy drinker. As the glass warmed up, the orange flavor came out more, too. (729 characters)

750ml 2014 bottle into a teku glass

dark murky golden color with a finger and half foamy head. smell of farmhouse yeast... you can definitely tell this was aged in wine barrels. funky funky funky! taste starts out with a lot of brett and then progresses into that funky farmhouse taste and ends with a slight bitterness. wine barrel is again apparent. i think this would just get better with more age. real complex and interesting. body is much lighter than i was expecting and i love it. carbonation is pretty high.

A-Cloudy pale orange, two finger head that leaves nice lacing.

S-Oak, white wine, lemon and grass. tart notes yeast and wheat.

T-Very white wine flavor, oak as well, nice tart notes, oranges, lemon and grass.

M-Lighter drier finish, nice carbonation.

O-Didn't get much of the hop flavor but still a good beer. (313 characters)

Poured from a 750ml bottle purchased after the release in spring of 2014.
Smell is floral, grassy, banana, citrus fruits.
Taste is slightly tart, you get some banana/Belgian yeastiness. White wine, lemon, dankiness.
Mouthfeel tart, sour, acidic.
Overall, an interesting farmhouse/saison from HF. Of course they knock it out of the park on this one. Worth the $20 I spent. (374 characters)

Presentation: 750 mL bottle chilled and split with a friend. Poured into two Sierra Nevafa tulip glasses. Even after chilling, this gushed a little, but almost all of it made it to the glasses.

Appearance: Completely opaque bright orange to yellow in color. Really large sticky head that recedes pretty quickly.

Aroma: Big orange zest and funk notes upfront. Green apple and citrus juice provides a really nice backing. The hops are definitely present there as well and provide an interesting contrast.

Taste: Bitter pine notes from the hops really take over more here than in the aroma. A light backing of citrus zest and funk does well to balance the bitterness. A really interesting combination of pale ale and saison/wild ale. It works very well together in this case.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and spritzy. Very refreshing and bright.

Overall, a really nice hoppy saison / wild ale. Completely unlike other farmhouse pales I've had. The aroma really highlighted nice citrus and the Mimosa barrel notes really stood out. I look forward to having this again. (1,066 characters)

Batch #2 bottle shared by Shaun Hill during Philly Beer Week.

A - Pours slightly hazed golden yellow with a nice one finger tall white head leaving spotty trails of lace down most of the glass.

S - Smells of damp earth, musty funk, spicy belgian yeast, and a nice strong fruit aroma - mainly apples and oranges. The hops are there but the other aromas drown them out a bit.

T - Starts off with the musty funk and wet earth from the aroma combining with the bready yeast and light spice to form the saison base. The fruit and hops come through toward the end of each sip, leaving the palate dried after each sip.

M - Light, smooth body with moderate carbonation. Nice crisp feel with a dry finish.

O - I only got a sample of batch one but I thought it was pretty good. Now that I got to try a proper pour I can really really see what this one is all about. The flavors work very well together and make a really awesome beer. (928 characters)

Huge thanks to Tom10101 for picking up and sending out this huge want.

A: Copper yellow haze topped with 3 fingers of white foam and settles down to a single layer across the glass. Streams of carbonation race to the top, suggesting a snappy carbonation.

S: Lemony dank basement with muskiness, yeasts and wheatiness topped with some minerals. Finish is a little acid and as it warms some notes of under ripe banana.

T: Lemony acidity with sourness of grape skins and brett funk. Wheaty notes with medical herbal notes and chalky minerals.

M: Light to medium bodied with a soft carbonation combined with light crisp tartness.

O: A refreshing and tangy drink grounded with funkiness and wheat. Light and refreshing it holds nothing back in the tart and sour department and never plays down to a crowd looking for something sweet. Bold and assertive. (857 characters)

**Batch 1**

Moderately orange with a dense, off-white head with good retention and nice lacing. The nose is excellent. A nice Brett character is present, but as it warms up, it grows increasingly clove and plastic-like, along with some herbal character (cilantro stalks). The dry hop character has fallen off. Still, this is nice. The palate is significantly better than the nose would suggest. Opening grassy with some clove and a little plastic, there's plenty of Brett flavor. Mildly fruity as well, and a touch spicy too. Drying, yeasty, mildly cheesy, this is nice.

**Batch 2**

Orange with a thin, white head with excellent retention and lacing. The nose has more of a fruit character than batch 1 did, with an aroma of cantaloupe and mango, along with some dry hops. Faintly clove and plastic like, with a little bit of sea breeze, this smells excellent. The palate is a little less complex, a little more watery and a fantastic balance and blend of flavors. Nice dry hop character. Drying, long finish with mild clove and citrus, this is excellent.

Beer is yellow and hazy with a nice head of small white bubbles, some lacing, moderate carbonation, looks good.

Aroma is pretty complex, fruitiness from the galaxy hops and a nice nose of Brett b I assume.

Beer is light and effervescent on the palate, strong through, nice funk, strong yeast character, almost spicy at times, tastes great, the finish is mildly dry, good hop character throughout. The yeast on the palate are the clear winner to me but overall it is a good beer. I'd have it again. (687 characters)

Pours cloudy yellow with sticky white head and tons of lacing. Nose is funky with waves of lemon and sourdough bread. The taste starts off with citrusy hops which become a bit tart as the flavor develops. Very yeasty with a clean tart finish. Mouthfeel is light with high carbonation. Overall, very tasty... Bottle: Poured a hazy pale yellow color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some excellent lacing. Aroma consists of pungent herbal hops with loads of funky notes and some rustic malt also discernable. Taste is a unique and funky mix between some herbal and floral hops with pungent notes with some rustic malt and light residual sugar notes. Brett is well dosed and hard to distinguish. Body is full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. This beer made for a very nice Christmas eve treat. (516 characters)

Poured a very cloudy, hazy, orange. HUGE 4 inch head even with a very cautious, slow pour. Settles to a 1/2 inch fluffy white head with thick, chunky lacing.

Bready yeast dominates the scent. The funkiness is in the background. I LOVE the way IPA smell and with the added funk, the aroma is a winner!

The taste is good. If it were considered a 'true' Saison, I'd probably rate it lower, but being a bretted IPA makes it hit the mark. It isn't my first choice in style, but it is very good. First taste is of mostly bready. Once past the breadiness (is that a word??) you get hit with a fantastic funk fromthe Brett. Then a smooth, tart finish.

It is a medium body and on the dry side.

I reslly enjoyed this beer and the IPA w/ brett thing...but I prefer a more traditional saison. That being said, I'd never turn this away. Really enjoyed it and glad to have had the opportunity. (887 characters)

Thanks to Todd for sharing both batches of this beer at various events. Served in various taster glasses.

A - A finger of white foam settles to a ring, haze, and spotty lace. Murky and cloudy orange body.

S - Tons of earthy, peppery, and spicy yeast flavors, with appleskins and fruity notes as well. The second batch seemed to have a bit more malt sweetness and tropical brett character to it. Galaxy hops seem a tad understated, although when I had Batch 1 the bottle was 5-6 months old.

T - The taste is again quite earthy and bready, with some phenolic, pepper and spicy yeast character. Light sour lemon note in the finish. Batch 2 is sweeter and fruitier, with mild and fairly restrained oak presence.

M - Smooth texture, lower carbonation, medium body, lightly dry, with a touch of acidity to it.

D - I prefer Batch 2, probably because it was fresher. The tropical and fruity notes seem to help offset the aggressively spicy yeast that I didn't love in Batch 1. Also, I think I had the dregs of Batch 1, which is partially why I didn't post my review until now. An interesting beer from Hill Farmstead, but doesn't totally work for my tastes. (1,154 characters)

Serious gusher alert!

Appearance: Pours a murky dull orange with a massive 3 finger white crown composed of tight and fine carbonation bubbles. Moderate retention and lots of lace.

Smell: Definitely my favorite aspect of this brew. Mango, apricot, peach, lemon, grapefruit, passion fruit, and belgian esters.

Taste: Has most of the same notes the nose possesses, but they blend to the point where they are harder to pick out individually. The overly carbonated mouthfeel also makes picking them out more difficult.

Mouthfeel: Thin side of medium bodied with ample carbonation. The carbonation is so velvety smooth but its simply over carbonated to the point where it takes away from both the flavor and the mouthfeel.

Overall: I really really like this beer and think its one that Hill Farmstead could really dial in and improve upon in the future. (853 characters)

Thanks to millerbuffoon for opening this one last night. This bottle was alive, lots of foam spewing from the top of the bottle. Even with a gentle pour this beer has a massive white head on top of a cloudy yellow body. The smell of the beer is very good, it smells sour but holds the base malt aromas as well. It's pretty impressive honestly. The taste of the beer isn't really sour at all. The beer tastes a lot cleaner than it looks. The mouthfeel has a pretty active carbonation to it with a lighter body. Overall this beer is good, not something I would seek out for myself in the future but I enjoyed having it. (617 characters)
