Another well packaged 750ml growler sent by way of the o-so generous RSchaeffer.

This was the first experience I had with any hop forward beers from Hill Farmstead. Excited non the less.

Good bubbles from the growler and out pours a light olive colored liquid. Grass and some pine needles emerge with a bit of lemon rind and some pepper. Hops for sure and not the juicy fruit type, this was all about the bitterness. Maybe not as expressive a nose that I was expecting but still distinctly about the hops.

The first taste was very close to what was apparent on the nose. Big bitterness from the hops. Grass, spices and some vegetal flavors among the bitterness. The pine comes out in spades giving a high amount of residual flavor to be tasted long after each sip is swallowed. The malt took a back seat which in hindsight, was understandable as to let the Amarillo give it's full intensity.

Only the second strictly Amarillo hop based ipa I have had (after Mikkeller's Amarillo) and one which I really felt expressed what this hop can contribute when balanced and blended with other varietals. Long bitterness well into the night.

Happy to be able to give this one a try on tap at The Farmhouse Tap and grill in Burlington Vt.

Pours a cloudy dull golden shade of lighter amber. The off white head leaves well developed fine lacing behind on the glass.

Citrus nose with whiffs of fresh oranges, lemon and melon. Nice..

Fruity flavors o'plenty, crisp and dry with more and more grapefruit notes shimmering upon the palate. Quality and very tasty IPA...More please...

750 mL growler poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Pale hazy orange. Huge white head. Laces nicely and retains a thin layer of surface foam.

Smell - Orangey hops. A bit of grapefruit. Smells like a sweet freshly cut orange though. Slight bit of pale malt.

Taste - Really orangey. Slight sweetness. Pale malt and a ton of graininess. There's a little bit of a weird flavor in the very back, but it's so slight I'm not really sure it's the beer or my imagination.

Mouthfeel - Light, grainy, with a false sweetness. Fades quickly to a grainy and light bitterness.

Overall - The hop is good, but one dimensional. Doesn't live up to the other single hop pales from Hill Farmstead.

A big thanks to Sean9689 for sharing this with everyone at Zwanze Day 2011. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance – Pours into a Cantillon tulip with a slightly hazy orange. About a finger of light tan head is achieved and leaves some nice looking lacing.

Smell – Citrus and tropical aromas, grassy herbal qualities, and quite obviously Amarillo hops.

Taste – Subdued hoppy bitterness, citrus peel, less tropical flavors than I was expecting/hoping for. Ends with a hint of bread and slight caramel malt.

Mouthfeel – Medium to lighter bodied, decent carbonation, finishes a bit dry.

Overall – Extremely quaffable and tasty. Glad I was able to try this and would have grabbed another glass if there weren’t so many other good beers available.
