Notes/Commercial Description:
George was our grandfather’s brother, and Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings.

George is our American Brown Ale. Hopped, rightfully so, with Centennial, Cascade, and a touch of Columbus…

Served on tap at Black Back in Waterbury.
Serves up a deep brown with minimal head.
Smells of coffee and molases. Lots of roastiness here.
Taste is amazing, right in line with aromas. Big roasty flavor.
Mouthfeel is mellow and inviting.
Overall, the most enjoyable brown ale I've ever had.

Date: 4-17-14
Location: Hill Farmstead Brewery
Glassware: Tulip
Appearance: Brown and fairly opaque. When the beer is half done I can see to the bottom of my glass. The carbonation is off white brown and pours about a thumb width high. A ring of carbonation in present throughout and whisps lie a top the beer.
Aromatics: All the aromas are mild and so very well blended together. The first scents that hit me are flavors of semi sweet chocolate and lightly roasted coffee. After that I get a number of earthen flavors like nuts and wheat.
Flavor: The flavors like the aroma blend so well making this beer so delicious. As with the aroma the chocolate and coffee flavors are first. The malts are add a touch of bitterness there but some extra sugar comes in to balance the whole thing out.
Mouthfeel: The beer is medium in body. Lightly viscous and coats my tongue very smoothly. Immensely drinkable.
Notes: Bottled 4/9/14 at HF and consumed on the suggested drink by date of 4/17/14. Poured into a HF 2L growler.

poured from a Growler fresh from Hill Farmstead into a pint glass. I am not a huge fan of brown ales, but i decided to grab some George while i was up in Greensboro, because its Hill Farmstead and with all the limits and the line i went for a strategy of getting a wide range of beer rather than alot of the things i wanted.

So anyways. as soon as i poured this i knew it was going to be an above average brown. the nose jumps up from the glass and its all damp fall forest floor and hint of sweetness as well.

A. Pours a deep brown with a small head. little tight ring of suds retained around the glass all the way through. looking through this beer its a deep dark leathery color, the head is bone in color and tight tiny little bubbles.

S. Scent is very earthy, very much a dewy forest floor mid fall. Some lightly roasted coffee and just a touch of sweetness from the malt.

T. Tastes a bitter coffee at first that gives way to a nice roasted malt with a slight sweet tinge in the back end. Im getting a faint burnt marshmellow in the middle as well. its not a super long or dynamic taste, but its very much to the point and its a solid Brown ale. The tinge that hits the back of your mouth has a nice little resiny hop after glow, it invites you to sip again!

M. Beer is medium and carbonation is light/medium. IBU is relativly low and the beer is very drinkable, its one of my favorite least favorite types of beer at this point

O. Overall Hill does it again, as someone who does not tend to like many browns i do enjoy this beer. Is it blowing me away, no. but is it a true brown ale that has very solid characteristics, absolutely. I would go as far as to say its the best Brown ale i have had yet to date.

On tap at The Jeffrey, NYC

Dark brown pour with head gradually reducing to fine lacing. Roasty malts, coffee and a touch of chocolate. The flavors are a bit watered down. The mouthfeel is thin but oily with smooth, creamy active carbonation. Quaffable. I'm keeping this short because this is a nice brown ale but not great.

on draft at The Farmhouse Tap and Grill in Burlington Vermont.

a: Brown to black, half finger off white head receded to thin patchy surface foam and slight lacing.

s: Mild dark chocolate.

t: Mild black coffee with a vaguely soapy note throughout..

m: Moderate, more body than Everett.

o: Not sure where the soapy note came from, possibly the tap line or the glass. Otherwise, not as tasty as Everett but with more substance.
