Ann is the wine barrel-aged version of Anna, our grandfather's sister, as well as the name of our honey farmstead ale. In her honor, we fill French oak wine barrels with Anna and allow the beer to mature in the presence of our resident microflora. After extended aging for as long as it requires to reach its apex, a beautifully complex beer emerges; Anna becomes Ann. Only the finest expressions of barrel-aged Anna become Ann; our version of Grand Cru, this beer represents the finest barrel results at their peak representation. Each 750ml bottle is naturally carbonated and hand-dipped in beeswax, Ann exhibits and showcases the microflora of her landscape.

Shared with my new bride.

Pours a very nice and bright golden color with a slight haze to it. Some nice orange hues are seen on the edges. There is a nice medium dense head that is soapy and champagne like. (4.5)

Aroma is wonderful! WOW!!!! White wine and grape skins come up first. Awesome Chardonnay notes, fruit sweetness along with some nice mild sugary notes are perceived. Some nice vinous and woody notes are present as well. There is some slight funk to it and some good Saison spice. And some good fruit tartness. (5.0)

Flavor starts off with amazing vinous notes, white grapes with some nice slight sugary notes. The flavors are so well blended and compliment each other so well. Awesome fruit notes with some lemon zest and some nice apple and pear juice sweetness in the background. The tartness notes are very sharp and delicious and blend so well with the sweet. The finish is nice and dry with some nice woody notes. Mouthfeel is crisp and bubbly. (4.5)(5.0)

Overall this is a great brew. Delicious barrel notes compliment the nice wine notes and add some funk to the sweetness and tartness. There is some good earthy grain that also compliments the sweetness and tartness of the brew. Very dry finish. (5.0)

2015 batch, which I think is batch #3. Bottle pour from Hill Farmstead Brewery in Greensboro, VT.

This one pours a fairly clear golden orange color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.

This smells like lemon peel, tea, honey, grassy funk, white wine, pear skin, melon, Riesling, and a minerally funk.

This is my biggest white whale, the beer I have most wanted to try since first trying Hill Farmstead originally 10 years ago. It’s tremendous, just about as good as it gets for saison, but, it wasn’t even the best beer I had from Hill Farmstead on my recent trip. That’s how high the bar is for this long-time favorite brewery of mine. This has soft, subtle, and richly complex flavor to it. There’s the obvious honey, almost like honey-soaked pears, or something like that, with white wine, Riesling grapes, melon, apricot jam, and a floral and minerally funk. All of these flavor descriptions make it seem like it’s a super strong and intense beer – it really isn’t. It’s really delicate, and rewards slower sipping and enjoying.

This is light bodied, soft, almost creamy, with a wonderful drinkability. It’s well carbonated, but in a subtle way.

This might not be the exact top of the mountain for Hill Farmstead – that’s probably Samuel, or one of the SARA Residency beers. But this is pretty close to the top, and a perfect expression of an already great beer in Anna.
