Just finished my last bottle. 2013 vintage. Black, yup, check. Tan to khaki head, some lacing and the head does indeed stick around for a while. When is leaves a tight little ring is left around the glass like a lovely garter belt. Aroma for a one year old barrell aged beer is still amazing. Chocolate, vanilla, just a hint of toffee/coffee, wood. A little peppery from the rye in the mouth, but it melds with the vanilla and chocolate. Roast flavor is light. This beer is really about the nuance Hill Farmstead is able to create with there barrel program. The soft flavors that are added are difficult to translate in written word. The mouthfeel is exquisite, rye, it is the magic grain. The rye really adds so much body. At times I'd like to imagine HF as over-rated, then I drink one of their beers and remember.....oh yeah......

500 ml bottle dated 6/13. Thanks Dany. Pitch black with a thin mocha color ring. Aroma is dark roasty malt. Taste is bitter euro roast. Unsweetened, licorice, smoke, burnt coffee. Favors are pronounced but still restrained. Taste actually builds after you swallow, bitter coffee comes through. Not much bourbon. Maybe a touch on the back. Super drinkable like every HF beer. A little thin for an imperial stout. Otherwise pretty tasty and unique.

Deserving of its world class rating. It's a sitter; it sits heavy in the glass with that motor oil appearance and texture from restrained carbonation, that "tar pit" look. Not so far from the densest BBA stouts, like BCBS, and it definitely has that slickness on the tongue. The trick here, though, is that the oak from the barrel is as present as the bourbon, so it's not just a boozy hammer, it's oakey. Should make anyone's list of favorite BBA stouts.
