Von Trapp Dunkel LagerVon Trapp Dunkel Lager
BEER INFO

Brewed by:
von Trapp Brewing
Vermont, United States | website

Style: Munich Dunkel Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our darkest year round beer however, looks can be deceiving. Dunkel features notes of chocolate with a full malt back bone. Contrary to its dark color, this beer finishes crisp and clean with a round hop flavor.

Its come to the point where if I'm looking for an authentic German style beer I just pick up a 6er of any Von Trapp beer. This one features a medium body with an aroma and taste that just oozes of cocoa nibs. On the dry side and extremely drinkable. Perfect for this chilly windy day.

Toasty, Bready, Clean, Authentic

The hills are alive ... with some really tasty lagers. The brewer’s intention here is to go right after the Munich Dunkel style, and this beer is a liquified loaf of rustic dark bread from start to finish. Some balancing hops show up along the way, and more fresh grain isn’t far behind. Give me a liter with a meat and cheese board and we are talking pure bliss. Von Trapp’s take easily matches its German counterparts.

Had on tap at The Trapp Family Lodge 12/7
Served in a pilsner glass

A: This beer pours a hazy deep amber, almost chestnut brown color with a one finger of creamy off white head. Head retains nicely leaving sheets of lacing on the glass.

S: Nose is sweet caramel, chocolate notes and a hint of nuttiness.

T: Taste light and sweet caramel malts at the forefront. A surprising undercurrent of light chocolate finds its way in. A touch of grain and bread mingled with the chocolate. Finish has a touch of hop bite to it.

M: Lighter side of medium body, medium carbonation, crisp, clean but a touch of a sticky finish.

O: Goes down easy, very tasty, not too filling, mild kick, very nice represnetation of style. I could certainly have several pints of this beer.

On tap at the deli above the brewery.

Nice deep brown color with an ample tan head.

The aroma was that of lightly roasted grains.

The taste was toasty and full bodied, perfect for the style. I could taste the malts, but their sweetness was not forward at all which in my book made this an outstanding beer.

This beer was extremely drinkable, there was no alcohol present in the aroma or taste.

Pours a mild brown color with a one-finger head into my glass. Certainly looks like a proper dunkel.

Aroma is sweet and full of grainy malt. Simple and yet still elegant at the same time.

Sweet, chewy grains greet the tongue. Delicious and iteffectively quenches my thirst.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering chewy malt and swwetness.

Very, very good example of this style. They know their way around German styles.

Appearance: It's a very dark copper to mahogany brew with a two finger head that leaves behind thick lacing.

Aroma: Caramelized sugar, molasses, chocolate malts, light floral hop in the back.

Taste: Molasses, chocolate malts, roasted hops with a good floral bite and a faint citrus note. Dark fruits, raisins with a few notes of dates.

Notes: What a great example of a Dunkel Lager dam tasty all around. Cheers.

The beer poured a dark red/brown color. There was a tiny tan head.
Roasted malt aroma, hint of chocolate.
Chocolate more apparent in the taste, with a floral hop finish.
On the dry side.

12 oz bottle into a nonic glass, best before 12/19/15. Pours a wonderful brown color with an off-white head that fades and leaves a little lacing. Smells of bitter roasted malts and hints of coffee, underlying sweetness. Wow, great flavor, a little sweet at the end, really doughy, a bunch of bitter and roasted malts, some burnt coffee in the middle, a touch of dark fruit and cacao. Nice light body matches the ABV. A very solid Dunkel Lager coming out of VT that easily rivals if not beats what comes out of Munich, I recommend.

As previous reviewer said "Pours a mild brown color with a one-finger head into my glass". I agree completely. Very drinkable.

My brother and I went up to see and taste what Trapp was all about. Had the beer lady call down to the brewery to see if we could talk to Alan the brew master. He did take time from his very busy day to give us a quick tour, The brewery is very up to
date but very small. They are selling out faster than they can brew and will no doubt out grow their current space. Hopefully they will start selling take out bombers in the near future.

The Dunkel was very drinkable and consistent to the end, no after taste.
Could of had a couple more pints and been a very happy camper.

As far as the location of the brewery, it's as close to God as you can get. We had a prefect day on our visit and could see 50 miles for 360 degrees. This would be a must stop if you are anywhere near Stowe Vermont. Plus Ben & Jerry's is close by.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on June 21, 2015.

The pour is a highly attractive reddish-brown building up to a huge mocha head that lasts for some time.

The aroma has a sweet and burnt malt mix, a little light chocolate, wooden crate, and vague earthy hops.

Light body.

The taste is sweet and smooth but the bitterness emerges more as it goes along.

Tap: Poured a clear dark brown color lager with a small dark foamy head with average retention. Aroma of chocolate malt notes is very nice with light dry notes also noticeable. Taste is also dominated by chocolate malt notes with light dry roasted malt notes and light caramel. Body is somewhat thing with average carbonation. Nice level of complexity with great drinkability factor.
