1l swingtop growler. Thanks Matt!

A: Black body, brown highlights, thin cap of frothy tan foam. Poor retention, spotty lace. No better than average.

S: Smoky, with dark fruit (raisins, plums), and whole grain bread crust. Really nice.

T: Breadiness and minerality up front, with dark fruit behind. Scotch-like smokiness ahead of a clean finish. Great.

M: Smooth, slick, light-to-medium body; low carbonation. Just ok.

O: Really enjoyable Schwarzbier; I've love to try it on tap at the brewpub someday.

easily the best schwarzbier ive encountered. pours a thick flat chocolate brown color with a nitro look and feel to it. the nose is chocolate malt, lots of roast and some coffee in there as well. not bitter at all, but very rich and earthy, more body than im used to in the style, and a really lovely creamy texture all the way though this. more chocolate than coffee in terms of flavor, with the roasty barley also contributing a lot of flavor and body. usually these beers seem thin and filling at the same time, while this one is thick like a milkshake yet infinitely sessionable. the first trapp beer ive had, but I am keen to try as many as I can get my hands on this summer. the quality of this brew is just incredible, never had a schwarzbier like this, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in a totally unique dark beer. would love to get this into my regular fall lineup.

I appreciated my daughter bringing a milk crate of Trapp lagers home for me and this is the first one I've cracked. The Trosten is a unique beer, quite unlike anything I've had. The smoke in this 1 liter flippy (is this really a growler?) was a little more prominent than I expected but still well balanced. The aroma is a bit more dark chocolate with nice the malt notes. There wasn't too much of a head the day after opening but there was only about 12 oz left in the bottle so I wasn't expecting long lasting fluff. This is a great beer to drink for a session on a snowy day; either sharing this generous package keeping all to one's self. Trosten translates more like solace than comfort although I think I understand what the Germans mean. Take off your shoes, put up your feet, and enjoy this beer from these excellent lager makers.

Stopped into the brewpub on 07APR12 after a bit of hiking around the area with Alewife. Opted for a stein of this to slake my thirst. Says it's currently at 5.40% ABV.

Poured a deep, dark brown. The head was a fine layer of beige bubbles, thinning quickly yet leaving some wispy lacing. Had a lightly roasty nose, with some traces of sweetness. A bit of prickle hit the tongue, with the body being about medium overall.

Flavor, too, had some light sweetness, with a hint of caramel before getting into some good roasty bitterness. There was also a subtle smokey character present as it faded into some pleasant floral hoppiness at the finish. Solid and tasty; a good session bier. Prosit!
