Notes/Commercial Description:
Pastime Pale Ale is a "hopped up" version of an American style pale ale. The beer is deep amber to copper color, and receives several generous additions of Centennial and Cascade hops. These hops give the beer a coplex and enticing character, with spicy aromas of citrus and pine. Specialty grains deliver a rich and full-bodied flavor, with a bold taste of caramel and toasted malt. Our brewery is located in the former headquarters of the Maytag Corp., and the "Pastime" was the first washing machine made by the Maytag Company in 1907.

look: 3 | smell: 3 | taste: 2.5 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 2.5

Appearance: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. The beer is a slightly hazy golden color. Pour produces a thin head approximately 1/2 inch in height. Head fades quickly to a small ring around the glass with little lacing.

Smell: All hops with this one here. Mostly floral hop aromas, a touch of citrus and pine in it as well. Makes me think a little of lemon scented pinesol.

Taste: Unbalanced flavor with an over the top hop bitterness. Not a lot of flavor, a touch of lemon citrus, and then just bitterness.

Mouthfeel: A little to the light side. Well carbonatated, perhaps a touch too much. Light, lively, and prickly on the tongue.

Overall: Just an ok APA. A bit unbalanced - to much to the hop end of the spectrum. Also a bit light and watery feeling. I bought a 6-pack on "close-out" (the store was not going to continue to sell this) for $2.99. After having had some, I actually wouldn't want to pay much more than that. There are far too many better APAs available.

Sampled last night on 5/19/14. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a tulip glass.

Pours a pretty hazy golden in color with a good almost 2--finger creamy/foamy off-white head. A good amount of lacing is seen with each sip. The aroma is mostly of hops with a hint of citrus and floral. The taste is similar to the smell with a slightly pine 'hoppy' aftertaste BUT wasn't bad nor did it linger at all. This one actually got a bit better after a couple of sips. Ended up drinking of of it actually. Perfect carbonation as well. Overall I liked it.

Poured from a Bomber to a Pint Glass.

A: Hazy Golden. No other way to describe it. Heavy-whispy lacing.

S: Pine dominates the aroma with hints of citrus. (Right on par with the Centennial/Cascade combo their website says)

T: Firm bitterness for a pale ale. Not so much it borders on IPA territory as many APA's do these days Bitter start. Finishes sweeter but still balanced.

M: Very sessionable, Medium-heavy for style.

D: Easily one of my favorite pale ales. Very sessionable while still being complex. It is certainly a bright pale ale and very surprising for an ale brewed in IA. Great stuff.

Served out of the bottle at Fong's pizza in Des Moines. Pours a carsmelish brown without too much head. Nose is a little biscuity with some piney citrus hops. Taste is similar to the nose. Biscuity, bready malts start it off. These fade to some citrusy, earthy, piney hops. Nicely balanced with malts being on the dominant side. Mouth is creamy until the back when carbonation kicks in. Pretty decent pale ale, helped accompany my pizza.

Poured from a 12oz bottle...

Appearance: Golden/amber hue with minor head and mediocre lacing.

Smell/Taste: Nose of floral / citrus hop aromas amid a minor caramel malt base. Taste was mostly hop intensive with a clean but odd bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Lightly carbonated with a medium body.

Overall: Mediocre at best.

Into a tulip glass, Pastime Pale pours a reddish copper color, with a finger of off white foam on top. Some sticky lacing forms around the edges as the foam settles. A cluster of larger bubbles clings to one side, and the skim breaks apart on its own around the edges.

Caramel malt aroma, simple and straightforward. Bready and tea-like, with a bit of caramel sweetness. Not much in the way of hops here, pretty nondescript.

Lightly toasted multigrain bread, honey, toffee sweetness, clean and dry finish. Lingering malt complexity, nutty almond and bready notes hang around with a low level bitterness. Something slightly astringent dampens the feel a bit, but isn't a dealbreaker. Overall it's pretty simple but not bad. More of a malt-forward amber ale (possibly due to age, bottle undated), but the brewery calls it a pale ale. Flavorful and worth a try.

Single from John's Grocery, Iowa City, IA.
