I wasn’t expecting much… pours dark brown, near black with some coppery-ruby highlights. Beige foam was short-lived but a soapy collar lasted the entire “consumption.” So far the beer looks the part.
The first sniff of the nose impressed me, lots of roasted coffee goodness. It wasn’t weak, it wasn’t watered down. It was full on coffee, very nice. At the back I got the faintest hint of metal and some off aroma. I let it warm up more before I smelled it again. The off aroma was clearer, sort of a grassy/hay/gerbil food aroma. Kind of gross and ultimately hurt the depth of the nose.
On the palate the toasty, roasty coffee characteristics shined upfront but the finish was polluted with a grassy/gerbil food taste plus an off-putting charred flavor. I wasn’t impressed with the flavor profile. Yes, the coffee flavors were likeable but overall I didn’t find this beer enjoyable and was unable to finish the bomber.
Decent mouthfeel, medium-full with the right amount of carbonation; probably the best aspect of this beer.
Madhouse has yet to impress me. Maybe this beer is off but I don’t think so. I’ve had it before, on-tap, and was left underwhelmed. Okay at best.

I had a sample of this a couple weeks ago and I thought it was pretty good, I figured I ought to pick up a bomber as I never took notes on it. One cool bit about this beer is that the coffee roaster is more or less in the back yard of a winery under the same ownership of the brewery, I would imagine the coffee here is as fresh as can be. Pours a pretty dark color, almost black with a tiny off white head that fizzes out quickly. The aroma is nice with chocolate, coffee and ash, there was some green apple up front but it faded pretty quickly. The flavor is lots of bitter and roasty notes with plenty of coffee and dark chocolate flavor. There is an odd flavor of under-ripe fruit throughout, and there is a really strong astringency in the finish that lingers for some time. The beer is a bit thin but certainly has a nice mouthfeel and is easy to drink in that regard. The beer is good, no great at first impressions but flaws show up as the pint gets down and the whole thing gets old after a bit. This is clearly the best beer that Madhouse has put out yet. Finishing a bomber of it was not wholly impossible, but it wasn't the most pleasant thing in the world either.

Pour out of a bomber bottle. Dark black pour with a medium sized tan head. Aroma of coffee is instant with a little dark chocolate on the nose. First few sips were a bit too much bitter coffee but the longer that this one sits the better it starts to taste. Would buy again.

A - pours a brownish color without much of a head on it
S - the nose consists of rich coffee and chocolate malts without much else.
T - starts off with dark chocolates that fade to a nice roasted malt. Coffee is strongly mixed in at this point as well. On the finish I got some piney hops that I didn't detect in the nose. Ends with coffee lingering for a while. Pretty good.
M - thin body would some burning carbonation on the backend
D - this is a decent coffee stout. Nothing too crazy but delicious in its own right. It was everything I expected it to be and a bit more. Worth a shot if you are in the Hawkeye state.

Coffee Stout pours a black color, with a small lacing head. There is a strong fresh coffee aroma. The taste has a nice mellow coffee flavor, with very mellow toasted notes. Weaker flavors overall, but noticeable coffee flavors. Overall its an easy drinking coffee stoutl

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Appearance: Extremely dark brown with thin tan head and a single lacing ring.
Smell: Caramel-flavored coffee, chocolate and molasses. Smells a little sweet.
Taste: Starts off sweet with caramel, milk chocolate, molasses and light touches of coffee, but then becomes fairly bitter with espresso, dark chocolate, spicy English-style hops and a roasted bite.
Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium body, very dry finish. A little harsh, and not nearly as smooth as desired.
Overall: This is a pretty full flavored Coffee Stout. However, the abrupt shift from sweet to very bitter is a little harsh and makes it hard to want to return to this.

A: Near black with a thick and steady light brown head--frothy and billowing; lacing is great
S: Lots of roasted malts, chocolate, and of course coffee; some subtle dark fruits lingering beneath, as well as something metallic
T: Coffee up front and then something a bit medicinal, herbal, and slightly metallic comes in--the roasty malts, chocolate, and coffee shine but there is something a bit odd beneath the surface
F: Nice medium body up front--though it is a touch thin on the back side
O: A decent coffee stout that I would like to try a bit fresher (though this one was hardly old)

A - Pitch black with an average sized, frothy, smooth, creamy, sandy beige head. Decent retention leaving a thin, creamy lace.
S - Definitely dominated by roasted black coffee. Touches of roasted malt and chocolate but it plays second fiddle to the coffee. A faint smokey/peaty and earthy aroma.
T - Like the nose suggested, the flavor is dominated by dark, roasted coffee. There is a slight coffee astringency, but not too much. Slight creamy and mocha flavors along with the normal coffee. Mid sip to finish there is more of the slight smokey/peaty flavor along with a slight tartness. Slight bittersweet chocholate toward the finish as well.
M - Medium body with average carbonation. Very slick and smooth.
D - Goes down easy with a good body and nice taste. A little too much coffee to have me want it on a regular basis, but nice enough flavor.
Notes: Tons of coffee flavor. Not bad flavor, although it is a little too unbalanced toward coffee. As I was really disappointed in the IPA, I wasn't expecting much, but it ended up being a decent beer. Still could use some tweaking, but it seems like they learned a bit from the IPA. I liked it, but can't see myself getting it regularly (both for the price and the unbalanced coffee).

A - Poured out an opaque, jet black color with a three finger head of bubbly, light brown foam. It left sticky rings of lace on the glass.
S - It smelled of coffee and chocolate. Neither aroma was dominant.
T - It tasted of coffee, mocha-like flavors. Some toffee flavors with touches of caramel.
M - It was a little soft and creamy. A medium bodied ale with a fairly dry finish.
O - This is a a very good tasting coffee stout. The best of the 3 Madhouse beers that I've tried.

Pours a dark mahogany color, and appears black in the glass. Long lasting retention and plenty of drippy lacing crowning the glass. A generous skim remains on the surface for the duration of the glass.
Earthy roast coffee, dry bittersweet chocolate, mellow roasty aroma.
Creamy feel, no astringency, a light bitterness lingers from the earthy roast and bakers chocolate notes. This beer is fairly dry actually with a dominating dark chocolate and coffee combo. Pleasant and tasty, rich in flavor and thankfully mellow without the sweetness and astringency that coffee stouts can occasionally have. Reminds me a little of Founders Porter with coffee.

A bomber from an Iowa beer company.
This pours very black with a nice light tan head and lacing.
Nose is coffee.
Very strong bitter coffee taste. Malts contribute to this I am sure but the bitterness is really up front.
Mouth feel is a little thin, but I hate to discount it much since it should not be compared to the big 10% stouts. Overall, this is a well done beer and quite affordable and available for us.

This is a seasonal release from the Madhouse Brewing Company of Newton, Iowa and is made with mocha java coffee from the U.S. Roasterie in Des Moines, Iowa.
The 6.0% ABV beer pours pure black with a tall and thick head of foam that is light brown in color and leaves uneven lacing, thick on one side and light on the other. The aroma is dark roasted malt and coffee with a hint of sourness on the end. The taste is intense, dark, roasted malt and coffee, just a hint of sourness, with a dry finish and just a bit of bitterness compared to the intensely roasted flavor. I am not a fan of stouts that are overly sweet. This is strongly flavored and finishes dry. A very good American stout.

Roasted coffee bean dark brown with highlights of dark copper along the bottom edge. A Texas toast-thick slice of caramel nougat colored foam looks pretty good up top and is doing a wonderful job in the glass decoration department.
Even though coffee dominates the nose, there is definitely some roasted malt peaking through. Power is fine as well. If CS can bring it home on the taste buds, this might be the best beer that these guys brew.
My opinion of Mad House took a major nosedive after the abomination that was Iowa Grown IPA. Thankfully, Coffee Stout does some major repair work on their reputation. This is a tasty ale that does the sub-style proud.
As in the aroma, java is large and in charge, though far from over-the-top. Bittersweet chocolate is right beneath the surface, adding that crucial second flavor element. Hop flavor is on the low end, which is fine for the style, but the little green cones contribute just the right amount of countering bitterness.
A bit more barley ballast would have helped. That said, this is MBC's best mouthfeel beer, hands down. It gains a hint of light creaminess over time, and the bubbles are good from first ounce to (haven't yet reached, but I'm guessing) last.
If deciding to round up both the taste and the overall scores makes me a homer, then guilty as charged. Kudos to Madhouse for showing that they actually do know how to brew good craft beer (Pastime Pale Ale is worthwhile too). My suggestion would be to forget about a seasonal release and make this one year-round.

A regular offering from one of the dozen or so promising breweries that opened up in Iowa just as soon as I moved out of state. Just my luck...
Pours very thick, and a little aggressively fizzy for a coffee stout. Still, it's a pretty pour: jet black with a big mocha head.
Smells rough and burnt, like a nice porter. No real coffee nodes of which to speak, instead there's smooth chocolate, bitter barely, and some bittersour grain. Nothing too strong, and a little atypical for the style, but it's still nicely balanced.
Tastes a bit sweeter and smoother than it smells. The coffee is muted but there, and backed up nicely by sweet milk chocolate, and it all ends on a combination of bitter barley and dry hops.

Appearance: Straight pour into a pint glass. The color is a sexy, opaque black; no light passed through when I held it to my lamp. Two fingers of thick, tan head developed and dissipated to leave trails along the glass, a bubbly film, and a ring around the edge.
Smell: I could smell the coffee when I popped the cap. And, yes indeed, the smell delivers on the namesake: there is a backbone of roasted coffee. It is a cross between straight black and mocha, and it induces wonderful flashbacks of Stockyard Stout. Chocolate malts balance the roasted character nicely.
Taste: Massive coffee presence. Just massive. It gives the beer a taste comparable to straight black coffee -- albeit with a much more beer-like body and mouthfeel. Though I love it, it may be a little too much. Mid-pint, though, sweeter chocolate and caramel malts dampen the bitterness. Each sip leaves a bitter coffee aftertaste lingering on the very back of the tongue.
Drinkability: This is probably the best coffee-infused stout I have had to date. It is tasty stuff, but an affinity for coffee characteristics is required.
