Poured from a 22oz bomber to a snifter.

A -very dark with an inch of tobacco colored head. Very enticing couldn't wait to get the first sip!

S- the barrel characteristics were more prominent in the nose than the finish. still picked up more of the whiskey aroma itself than the charred oak, burnt molasses and vanilla that i expected from the BA process. Roasted Malt, coffee, leather , a hint of molasses and alcohol from the whiskey.

T -not as complex as i was expecting. the flavors didn't quite seem to compliment each other. Kinda reminded me of a jr high dance. Stout (coffee, chocolate, and lots of roasted malt) on one side and Rye Whiskey on the other. Every once in a while they got the courage to start getting closer to each other, but never actually figured out how to dance well together.

M -Too thin. Was more of a creamy lager feel than a thick, burly stout. would have liked a heavier mouth feel.

O -this was a good beer but not a superb beer. Glad i had, it but wont lose sleep if i dont have it again. It lacked the flavor complexity compared to other BA stouts. IMHO, this didn't even come close to BCBS as a previous review mention. Not even on the same playing field. Tasted like a good stout that had a little bit of Templeton added to it seperately. There was not enough of the barrel character was present; it was moreso just the booze. Brewers website says beer was aged for 3 mo in Templeton barrels. Maybe a longer barrel aging period would have helped...

A- It is strikingly black with a white head. The lacing stays on the glass and the two neutrals contrast well.

Smell- the barrel, the burnt notes from the malt and a nice whiskey barrel scent.

Taste: Phenomenol. The roasted malts and the thickness of the beer finish with a rounding from the barrels. The Templeton rye whiskey flavor adds sharp caramel and the obvious wood notes one would expect. There is slight chocolate and coffee notes from the roasted malts as well.

Mouthfeel- very luscious, robust stout. The barrel adds some slickness? or at least some kind of feel into the thick bodied beer.

Overall- Best Beer I tried at the Coralville, IA Brrrfest. Awesome. I like this TR Stout because I can drink a few more of them and because the barrel flavor is a complexity, but not an overwhelming one. It's a more sessionable, baby BCS variant if you will.

EDIT: My above review is based on the beer as it is sold on draft. I have subsequently purchased the beer in the bottle and it is really hot and the whiskey is overhwelming. I am not sure how to differentiate this in the BA review system and I am also unsure of why the taste is as different as it is. I have more bottles that I will cellar and may add to this review down the road. The beer was much more enjoyable on draft and I had rated it highly. I lowered it to account for the difference in taste between the serving styles.

A - Body is as black as can be. A 1/2 finger of creamy tan foam forms on top and dissipates within a few minutes. Good amount of lacing on the glass.

S - Raisins, sharp roasted malt, oak, bourbon, vanilla, and some acidic light roast coffee. Tons of aromas intermingling here. Just a hint of earthy hops and booze.

T - Dry dark roasted grains mixed in with a hefty dose of figs/raisins/dates up front. Mild bitter astringency from the roasted barley (not a bad thing at all in an imperial stout). Templeton really comes through toward the finish with definite vanilla and caramel as well as undertones of earthy, spicy rye. Finish is a mix of semi-sweet chocolate, bitter cocoa, mild boozines, and crisp rye grain flavor. Not nearly as heavy on the "barrel aged" flavor as some others I've sampled (bourbon county, king henry, kbs, etc), but still a very drinkable and balanced BA stout.

M - Thick body. Creamy with a hint of tingly carbonation in the finish. Finish is semi-dry with a touch of lingering sugars.
