March 2013 update: Aging this style for this long (3 years) can be risky, but this one was particularly hot out of the barrel and I had the luxury of having several bottles. Time to check up on it again. Bottle 503 of 532

A: Brilliant shade of golden amber with impressive clarity. Nice even release of bubbles from the bottom of the glass, similar to champagne. Not a whole lot of head, though it’s easily revived with a swirl of the glass.
S: Grainy, caramel, vanilla, with some apple/pear notes.
T: Initial impressions are white wine-like with soft melon flavors and a snap of alcohol showing, though fairly muted at this point. Mid-palate shows apple and pear along with a gentle oak influence. Just enough sweetness to enhance fruity esters. Finish is slightly dry and carries a mild alcohol bite.
M: Medium bodied, with brisk, lively carbonation. They hit this aspect perfectly, and 3 years later, it’s still a great example of proper bottle conditioning.

A little time has rounded off the rough edges and improved this from good to outstanding. For me, this is an elegant beer up there with an aged bottle of Curieux as far as my favorites in the style (and probably BRBC's best barrel-aged beer so far).

The brew was aged in French Oak barrels.

Picked this one up at the brewpub in Helena on the way to the Wife's parents. Kim and Brad (@ the brewery) hooked me up big time!! Thanks a ton.

I shared this with the Boise peeps and it was a huge hit. Bottle 207/532.

Pours pretty clear with a very slight haze light orange... great fluffy white lacing... fantastic retention.

Oak shows pretty heavy in the nose when colder.. but with warmth, it turns a bit toasty and really melds with pear and lesser apple estery components... some minor clove shows, so does a bit more white pepper.

Flavor begins with some soft malt character and a great blending of fruity esters and quite a bit less spicy phenols... plenty of apple tags the warm oak ... the wood never becomes tannic and is very balanced and adds tons of complexities.. a little vinous as it warms, the EtOH jump out of the glass a bit.. but still the alcohol is well within style and makes me realize this a 12% plus sipper.... some spicy hops show if you concentrate, but really get devoured by the Belgian qualities..

Medium/lite body lets you know this is a heavy ABV brew with some good aging potential... but I doubt I will be able to hang on to my bottles for the recommended "at least one year". Carbonation is about perfect for the style.

The ABV is off the charts for standard tripels, but really doesn't show as much as I would expect. This is a very well made beer that I am damn glad we added 300 miles to our trip to acquire.
