This place doesn't know how to properly carbonate beer, how to properly pour beer, or how to properly store kegs at the right temps. The food is subpar. Better luck at Free State or the Burger Stand, although the Burger Stand suffers from many of the same problems.
If you want to have a craft beer that's cheap, and you don't care if your food is soggy or not freshly made, or don't care about poor service/bartenders that don't know anything about beer, this is your place.
I really wanted to like it, but cannot justify going here again really.

Great beer selection! They have 4-5 beers that are always in stock but rotate 2-3 taps seemingly weekly with beers that I've usually never heard of.
Dempsey's is a great place to watch a soccer or basketball game! And the burgers are phenomenal!
While the portion sizes are more than generous, they aren't cloyingly greasy so they don't give you that "I'm full before I've even gotten started" feeling. I love the fact that I can actually order a medium rare burger (you don't really get that in most places).
I recommend the Hot Hawaiian to anyone, especially over these warm summer months.

I think this used to be Rick's Place back in the day. A total dive, but fun dive. Things have changed, and it's no Irish pub. It's a nice 'lounge' type bar with some various, if not large, selection of beer. Taps range from Odell's to Stella, and the menu is quite varied. If it weren't for the food, this place would not fair well as the beer selection would not draw in people.
With Free State just a block east, it's a tough task to draw in beer drinkers..unless you want the frat crowd. Not a bad place for lunch..then on to Free State

**Shortly after reviewing this place, it was announced the restaurant portion of Dempsey's, The Burger Stand, would be moving to a new location on Mass St., next to the restaurant, Esquina. I've heard Dempsey's will continue offering burgers, though I have no idea how they'll compare to the Burger Stand's. Regardless, stop in for a good beer in a great pub!**
Next to Angler's, this is my second favorite beer bar in downtown Lawrence. With Odell IPA as the house beer, you know you're in good company here. There are probably 6 taps, with a couple Odell offerings, SN pale ale, a Boulevard or two, and maybe Stella Artois (?). They have an extensive list of bottle options, including bombers of really good beers (Smokestacks, Avery & Great Divide big beers, nice Euro choices, and more). Atmosphere is fantastic. They've done a nice job lending an authentic pub feel to the place, making it very comfortable. It's been packed every time I've gone, so expect a lively atmosphere. The food is basic but outstanding: quality burgers with an array of combinations for toppings and the three varieties of fries (normal, truffle, and sweet potato) are THE BEST (and be sure to ask for the fries dipping sauces). There is a veggie burger option, too, by the way. Expect to pay $8-9 for the burger, and the fries will cost extra too. Add in a beer, and you're looking at a fairly expensive no frills meal. But trust me, it's worth it.
