This was a very tasty surprise! I would almost classify it as a Citrus Stout, oddly enough a good Citrus Stout. Roasted malt backbone, with a sour citrusy goodness on the palate. Works strangely well together. Got in a mix a six today and definitely will be picking up a sixer of it this weekend. Yummy stuff, cheers!

$2.19 (or $2.29) single poured into a shaker pint.

Appearance: Mostly black with some ruby tints on the side of the glass. Reasonable amount of lacing. Head falls to about half an inch and lingers.

Smell: A sort of peach or mango aroma is the most significant one as far as hoppy smells in this brew. Pretty sweet on the nose. There's a very faint roast character, but with eyes closed not knowing what this beer is, chances are you wouldn't guess it's a black pale ale.

Taste/feel: First thing I noticed was the huge feel. It's a surprisingly big bodied beer, and it tends to foam up in your mouth on each sip. There's then that slightly juicy peach/mango sort of flavor on the middle of the tongue. The finish is, again, that faint roastiness. The dark character of this beer that I was expecting really isn't there, which is surprising as well as disappointing.

A decent beer, but Odd Side has done so much better. There's a nice peach/mango thing going on in this beer, which would be nice in a pale ale or IPA, but it's as if this beer was dyed black with food coloring. I guess that's sort of impressive that they hid the roastiness that well? For me, I wanted it. Additionally, the way Black CPA foams up on my tongue was kind of interesting at first, but it just got to the point where it felt like I was eating foam off of a float. Well, that's not true... I love it in that case, just not so much in a beer.

Black CPA is a reasonably good beer from Odd Side, but your pupils won't dilate. I don't know what the age of this beer is (date is gone for some reason), but hops tend to fade, not malt.

$1.99 for a 12oz bottle @ Siciliano's. No ingredients or specs per the website or bottle. Pours out to a clear light black, forming a modest light tan head with good retention and lacing. Carbonation is moderate, ~2.5 carbs or so. Modest layer of yeast in the bottom of the bottle. The nose is great...classic black IPA. Lots of citrusy hops with a nicely balanced roast . Mouthfeel is prickly throughout with a medium hop and roast acidity, with a medium light body...a little watery towards the finish.. The taste begins with the citrusy hops...papaya and mango, then some roast malt...like black patent. French Roast in the finish, tart hop acidity and pine in the aftertaste. Bitterness is medium firm. I would ballpark it in the 60-70 IBU range.

A nice black IPA, but it needs more body and base malt. I much prefer Founders over this, and Heavy Seas is probably the next best in my book. Worth a try.

This is my first experience with Oddside Ales and unfortunately it was not a good one. Tried this on a friend's advice and was quite disappointed. The ale starts well, pouring a handsome cola color with a slight head and decent lacing. The aroma is hoppy but with a sweet malt note as well. Not unpleasant but there is something a little bit off about the nose. It has that slightly ammonia-y aroma that ipas sometimes have but in combination with the maltiness it seems very out of place and disconjointed. The flavor of the ale follows suit. It is sweet with a very bitter finish. Nice notes of coffee and toffee in the malt and pine In the hoppy finish but at the end of it all; this one just seems off. The flavors don't mesh and there is definitely a note that is just off in the whole spectrum of tastes. This is definitely not a bad beer but it is also definitely not one that I will return to.

This pours a black cola color with cocoa colored foam.

It's similar to a hoppy porter with grapefruit dankness rounding it out. Like a green hoppy porter.

The aroma has a squeeze of fresh grapefruit mixed with some pine needles.

It's like a burst of grapefruit pine with a bitter finish and a touch of resin with a roast complexity underlying it all.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a tulip glass

A - It is very dark with some ruby highlights. I got a tiny amount of tan head.

S - At first I just noticed a citrus aroma with a little roasted malt. As it warmed I got a coffee aroma.

T - As with the smell, I got a bunch of citrus at first with a little roasted malt. Once it warmed the coffee taste became apparent.

M - Medium

O - I didn't care for it until it warmed up and released some of the coffee aroma and taste. It is a good beer.
