Notes/Commercial Description:
[77% AA, 58 IBU, 5.9% ABV]

"A dry-hopped, pale, summer ale made from 100% Citra Hops! Citra is a new hop variety which became commercially available this year. Light and crisp with a HUGE hop aroma - lemon, orange and mango sensations from the hops alone!"

Poured on-tap in an imperial pint at the Horse Brass Pub in Portland. Reviewed from notes.

A- Fluffy white head, inch-thick, nice ringed lacing. Golden-orange color with nice clarity.

S- Malty and dry, some pepper and light pear scents.

T- Light and malty with a biscuity taste. Some bitter hops and subtle flavor. Slight pepper notes.

M- Medium bodied and dry.

O- First beer I've had from Prodigal Son. Decent go.

Tasted twice during the Pendleton Round-Up. Fresh batch less than a week since release. Tasted from a 20-oz glass (not plastic).

A: Color is a hazy amber-orange, arrived with a small white head that lasted for most of the tasting. Left really nice and prominent rings as the beer was consumed.

S: A lot of juicy citrus flavors right from the start - grapefruit, lemon, and orange juice flavors. Some piney green hops as well. Limited malt flavors - this is all about the hops and very nice.

T: Citrus hops flavors continue directly from the smell into the taste. A very nice hop forward balance without being too bitter. A clean bready flavor shows up mid taste along with some faint piney and grassy hop flavors. Tastes crisp and refreshing. Finish is clean with some faint citrus notes and a pleasant bitterness.

M: Medium body and moderate carbonation. Appropriate for an IPA, although this is billed as a summer ale.

D: Excellent. This is one of the best non-IPA, IPAs I've tasted in a while. The Citra hops are nicely showcased in this solid beer. For a small brewery in Eastern Oregon, this beer could easily stand up to some of the better offerings from Portland breweries. I consumed several pints over two sessions and wish I could get this around town.

On tap at Prodigal Son 8.19.10. 5.9% ABV, 77AA, 58 IBU, poured into nonic imperial pint glass.

One finger white head, medium-slow dissipation, significant lacing. Deep Gold body, a bit hazy, some carbonation clinging to sides of glass but none rising from bottom to top. Nose is fruity, tropical re mango up front, some lemon, malts pushed to background by the fruitiness. Taste is fruity up front, mango, lemon comes through more than in the nose, slight bitterness initially on the backend which got significantly more aggressive as it warmed. Medium-full mouthfeel, not a lot off effervescence, a bit crisp but not light. Drinkability ok, but could have ramped up the hops a bit, thought the singular use of Citra gave it a fairly unique flavor profile. Worth a try.
