On tap @ the bruery provisions

Look: Deep rich mahogany color with a 1/8 inch off white head and ok retention with some spotty lace

Smell: Lots of smoked malt on the nose with some peat notes and a touch of caramel

Taste: Huge malt presence with not as much smoke as anticipated but it is still there and quite nice. Caramel and toffee mid palate and finishes with some brown sugar

Mouthfeel: Just under medium on both body and carbonation and a bit dry and sticky

Overall: I really enjoyed this beer and will order it again. Recommended

On-tap at Bruery Provisions

A red tinted brown with a small off-white head. Quite heavy on the smoke with lots of malt underneath. Caramel, toffee, and a touch of butterscotch. A good toasted malt aroma, too. The smoke is fairly strong on the palate, a bit moreso than the aroma would indicate. Some sweetness of malt along with a soft saltiness and a little bit of toast.

Poured from a growler into a goblet.
Described on the menu at the taproom as being 6.1% abv

A: Slightly hazy, medium brown color with a partial surface residue of loose opalescent bubbles. Scant lacing remains on the glass.

S: Roasted, with a delicate chocolate quality that also involves mild and earthy dark fruit.

T: Begins off-dry, with roasted malt that is also slightly vinous. Acidity is absent. Malts develop a deep toffee quality during the middle. Smoke is non-descript and very faint toward the mild finish that is distinguished by estery fruit.

M: Medium viscosity, dull on the palate, with very low carbonation.

D/O: This is a mediocre scotch ale that really isn't distinguished by any positive quality--an unusual departure for Cismontane, whose beers are usually memorable and enjoyable. While sensory qualities all seem to stay within stylistic bounds, the smoke alluded to in the name is mostly lacking while the texture is distressingly lifeless.

Pours a handsome red-brown color with a modest head in the pint shaker. Rich and just smokey enough. Full of roasted malt but not overly sweet. Hints of bacon and bonfires, but the smoke just reminds me of single malt Scotches and is a lovely addition.

Only flaw is the dissipation of the carbonation, so drink fast. In other ways this is what a Scotch Ale should be, and it's one of the bertter ones for flavor that I've had in a long time. On tap at Local Habit in San Diego. Listed at 7.1% when I had it, which is confirmed by brewery.

On tap at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Pours a murky brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and fruity aromas. Taste is much the same with a slightly nutty flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that smells better than it tastes in my opinion.

On-tap at Bruery Provisions and served in a stange, on to the beer:

Ruby brown threatening to cross over to orange. There is a solid layer of head and a few strings of lace hanging around the glass. Goodness me, what a nose! Smokey chocolate in one, some Tootsie Roll type of chocolate flavor, I like this a lot.

What a lovely mix of flavors. There is some good smoke and jerky flavors upfront. Touches of chocolate make their makr in this beer. Additional flavors of brown sugar, tobacco, and fruit esters help create a profile that is more than a delight to drink. The beer has a medium sized mouthfeel, one with a little chew to it, and one that could be mistaken as a meal in a glass.

I haven't had a Cismontane beer for some time, and I know they've been cranking out more and more different beers during my time of absence. What a great surprise Smokin Santiago is, and what a way to keep my "hot streak" with beers going.

Pours a deep, dark mahogany.
Big malts with a hint of smoke. Booze.
A big malty, scotch ale, not too heavy with a light smokey aftertaste. Good carbonation. A slightly lighter scotch ale only adding to the drinkability .
Cismontane continues not to dissappoint. I'm rooting for these guys.
