The Beers of California

#93

Freshness Date: None

A: Pineapple golden, bright, and hazy. The head is towering white and doesn't seem to want to go anywhere at all.

S: Mostly grainy and yeasty with a hint of citrus zest. A simple and straight-forward nose.

T: There is moderate tartness paired with grass, mineral acidity, and faint citrus. The base is grainy and supports the dominant sourness and earthiness.

M: Bright with a good amount of carbonation. Refreshing and light.

O: Simple with a nice sourness that culminates into a refreshing light beer that is not quite exciting but is capable.

15 IBU. 4.5% ABV. 5 SRM. 500 ml brown glass bottle with generic straightforward label art and standard unbranded pry-off cap served into a flared stem-snifter/tulip hybrid glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; this brewery has put out some good brews. Cost was $8.99 at me local beer store.

Served cold - straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a 2 finger wide head of white colour. Soft complexion. Somewhat thin. Okay creaminess. Not frothy. No lacing as the head recedes. Head retention is above average - about 3-4 minutes - but that's to be expected at this low an ABV.

Body colour is a murky dull yellow. Nontransparent. Translucent. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Not real vibrant.

Doesn't appear to be alive. Kind of generic for the style. Still looking forward to trying it, though.

Sm: Clean lactobacillus and brettanomyces yeast - with some light funk, a bit of sourness, and some biscuity character. Blonde malts, pilsner malts, subtle oak, floral hops, and a hint of lemon esters. Grassy with some fruitiness. A pleasant appealing aroma of average strength. Any hopping is floral and timid.

No alcohol is detectable.

T: Some lightly tart lightly sour fruit - primarily lemon with a bit of sweet peach in the third act. Grassy. Lemon esters. The barrel/oak is really timid; not evocative at all. Blonde malts and pilsner malts fill out the body. It's shockingly simple; there's very little going on here. But it's a pleasant approachable table beer. The tartness and sourness should be amped up, but I do appreciate it for what it is. No alcohol is detectable. Not very funky; I think they used mainly pediococcus with a dash of lacto. Any brettanomyces gets overshadowed. A clean and balanced flavour profile. Little complexity, but some subtlety.

Mf: A biteen tart. Lightly acidic. Clean, smooth, wet. Lightly crisp. A bit overcarbonated, but it's forgivable. Supports and suits the flavour profile generally well, but doesn't feel custom-tailored to it. Not harsh, gushed, hot, or boozy. Pleasant to drink and somewhat refreshing. Pretty decent presence on the palate.

Dr: A likable if painfully simple "sour" from Cismontane. Would be a good introductory brew to ease newcomers to sours into the style. I definitely wouldn't get this again at its high pricetag, but at half the price I'd definitely revisit it - ideally with a year or two of age on it. Extremely drinkable. An ideal session or table beer.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a murky light orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour citrus flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable but the flavors on this one are unrefined in my opinion.
