Went back to visit the University of Oklahoma after what seems an eternity. Stopped in for a bite, on a Tuesday, early evening. We were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere, service, and selection of beers on tap. The server, who was training a new employee, was just awesome. She knew her stuff when it came to beer selections from the their lengthy listing of beers. Even the server who she was training was on top of things, making sure we were happy and enjoying ourselves (which we were). We liked it so much, we had a 3rd and then a 4th beer...and lost track after that! They had "Geeks Who Drink" trivia night (which we had never experienced (we're older now, after all, LOL!)). A great time was had by all!

I've visited this location twice while staying in Norman and will always return when I'm in town. If you're looking for a good selection of beer and good food in Norman, this would be the place to go.

A: A pretty chill atmosphere on weekday evenings, some patrons at the bars and fairly full tables/booths. A couple TVs around the bar, but certainly a bar/pub focus.

Q: The quality of everything I've had has been good. Beer has all been fresh, food served hot and fresh.

Service: The waitresses and bartenders I've had have all been friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, no knocks here.

Selection: A very good selection of tap beers with a tremendous bottle selection as well.

Food: The menu is varied, yet not overwhelming. Anything I've had was fresh, served quickly, and correctly. A great place to grab a good dinner and a few brews after work.

I like the place and think most craft beer folks would as well.

The Abner Ale House (A McNellie's Pub) is located in the heart of historic downtown Norman right on Main Street just down the street from Coach's a.k.a. The Brewhouse. Parking can be a bit of a PITA depending on the time of day, so give yourself plenty of time to find a parking spot on a one-way street. Those familiar with the chain will feel right at home as your greeted by a warm, UK inspired charm and hopefully an empty bar stool to call your own for a time. The beer menu isn't overly extensive (compared to the bigger houses), but it has plenty of various draught to keep a beer lover's attention. I like the special attention given to local/regional craft brewers. Our bartender was courteous & timely with our drink orders and refeshingly knowledgeable about the products being poured. The bottles can be overly pricey ($$$), so stick to the draught beers unless your wallet needs thinned. Afternoons are laid back, but evening & weekends can get downright packed. Abner's is certainly a welcomed refuge in a college beer wasteland!

I routinely go to this place because it is the only bar with good beer selection in town. Also, every Monday they have 'pint night' where a different beer is featured and you get to take the glass home. The food is great (I love the grilled cheese and pub fries) and the atmosphere is good. There are occasions when busy that the wait staff can be less than attentive, especially at the booths/tables, but the service at the bar is usually pretty good... so if you can get a spot at the bar, go for it. Not many TV's for sporting events, so this bar tends to be more of a chill out type of establishment. There is an upstairs that people often don't notice, so head up there for a change of scenery and play some darts.

I've been to Abner's Ale House a couple of times in the last month, and have not been impressed. This review is a little bias due to the fact that I've been to their McNellie's Pub in Tulsa, and it is leaps and bound better.
Let me start with the atmosphere. It was totally dead other than the techno, and the biligerant frat boys. This bar has no personality, no character! They were playing techno music non-stop, and when we asked the waitress if she could change the tunes she replied with, "I'll try but the female bartender is going to be pissed". The sevice wasn't too bad, but could definitely be better. She had no knowledge of the beer or beer styles at all. Paid $20 for a Bourbon Barrel Quad, and $4 or $4.50 for the Coops Porter. Food was on par with McNellies. The selection of beer includes a lot of fillers. By fillers I mean: red stripe, heineken, st. paulie girl, blue moon, pilsner urquel, boddingtons, newcastle, and stella artois. There are some Oklahoma brews on the list, and I liked that.
Overall, with all of that being said, I will probably re-visit Abner's Ale House everytime I visit Norman. It's sad, but there is no other place in Norman that even comes close with the beer selection, which is not saying a lot.
