Fresh bomber purchased in Vista, CA served in a pint glass.

Appearance: deep Amber, thin white head of micro bubbles. Perfectly clear.

Nose: explosion of fruit, grapefruit, honey

Taste: citrusy hops, kumquats, malty backbone, very drinkable, no hot alcohols but it does feel like an 8% beer.

Overall: San Diego is known for IPAs. This one is wonderful with the tropical fruit notes from the hops and specialty ingredients.

May 2nd, 2015 - It's Spring, but Mother Earth is more ambitious, celebrating all four seasons with this lighter IPA. Tangerine colored in the glass, and tangerine in the smell, it's heavy on the orange aroma too, with an edge of grapefruit bitterness to boot. But where the nose might be a run-of-the-mill mixture of citruses, the palate is pure excellence. Fluffy, light and well balanced, it is the perfect arbiter for the orange and grapefruit flavors. Strawberry makes an appearance, making the taste is a little lighter and fruitier, and a good sweetness that continues to tap on my shoulder, demanding my attention.

22oz. bottle with my Sierra Nevada Balloon glass – love the label art to this one
Notes taken from 04/08/2015

A: Bright and clear appearance of golden honey or caramel. Has a real nice brilliance to it. A thick inch or so of khaki cream stacks over top holding true for a few lengthy moments. Finally settles back into the rim and leaves some patchy ribbons of lace left strewn about the glass.

S: The nose is pungently tropic and dank with a lemon lime twist. I get tropic mango, unripe berry, tangerine, honeysuckle flowers and some dank earthy herbal elements to this. Malt shows in form of some light sugary cracker. Damn if this isn’t impressively aromatic.

T: Taste follows suit with a touch more heft in the sugary malt base. I get some assorted stone fruits with floral honey and grapefruit, tropical mango, melon, and tangerine. Has some real punchy bitterness to it which I love and a sweet cookie malt presence. Very dry and resinous in the finish with a strong herbal dankness lingering. Solid brew that is well balanced with no alcohol burn.

M: Moderate filling body and leaning on the softer side. Good spritzy carbonation to this with some peppery bitterness that nips at the palate. Dry and resinous finish with a long lasting linger.

D: I was definitely skeptical with this one given all the additional ingredients but ME did a great job bringing it all together. Comes across as a real hoppy DIPA with good balance and I like how the Loquat, prickly pear, and honey really comes through in the flavors.

Pours a clear deep amber with a thin white head. Pretty dark in color for a DIPA. Smell is pretty faint but I'm getting hints of citrus, flowers, and resin with some toasty malts as well. Taste is quite malty which doesn't surprise me considering the color. Grapefruit, orange, pineapple, flowers, honey suckle, and pine resin. Slightly sweet malts and a little toasty too. Pear is somewhat noticeable, but I probably wouldn't have guessed pears were used if it didn't say so on the bottle. Bitterness doesn't overwhelm the rest of the beer. Alcohol is not too noticeable. Mouthfeel is quite good, if a little thick. Drinks pretty well for 8%. Overall a pretty good DIPA. At first I wasn't sure if I liked but it's grown on me. At first I was getting loads of bitter orange and malts, but then those slowly went to the background and I'm getting more tropical fruit in there. Not exactly representative of the style, especially for San Diego, but worth trying. I would've liked something a bit lighter on its feet. I prefer a simple malt bill, and this one seems pretty heavy on the crystal malts.

On tap at Blind Lady Ale House. Orange color, good head. Aroma is hoppy and weird. Taste is also hoppy and yet weird, like flowers and strange herbs. I passed on taking a bottle home when I was in San Diego.

Thanks to Retsinis for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a hazy reddish-orange with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, honey, and prickly pear aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus juice, citrus zest, and prickly pear flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice mix of citrus forward hop and prickly pear characteristics all around.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Lagunitas mason jar
From: Costco in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $7.59
Purchased: March 29, 2015
Consumed: April 14, 2015
Misc.: Collab with Automatic Brewing Company

Poured an orangiesh, honey, semi-hazy color with three fingers of khaki white, rocky head. Tons of bubble streams coming up from the bottom, looking a lot like a thinned out snow globe. Very good amount of thick, rolling foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Great, long-lasting retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled pineapple, passion fruit, mango, red grapefruit, Citra, peach, cane sugar, caramel, floral and honey. Very nice on the nose. (Smell - 4.50)

Taste wasn’t nearly as good as the nose, but still the same flavors. First thing I got was tropical iced tea. Also bitter mango rind, red grapefruit, pineapple, some passion fruit, cane sugar, rye, honey, Citra and floral. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Abrupt, bitter, fruity finish. (Feel - 4.00)

This was a very good DIPA. Wow. The smell was the best part, but it had excellent retention and the taste was good as well. Would definitely have it again. (Overall - 4.00)

This review is for the 2015 Balboa Park Anniversary Ale - hope I got the right one.

This poured a deep amber with more copper than most, with an off-white (egg shell? latte?) head. The aroma is king here. I just sat there and with my nose in the glass (tulip if you care) to the point where I could feel my wife looking over wondering if something was wrong. Just super tropicals dominating here. The bottle mentions ingredients inspired by the landscape of the park, which I suppose could be part of the nose but I've not had prickly pear to give a proper assessment. The other ingredients speak of sweetness, and there was a tropical sweetness to this, so yeah maybe loquat and honey and date are a part of what I was smelling. Regardless, I just kept smelling.

Now, the flavor was a really just a slight drop off, but an exact replica of the aroma with a dollop of malt (duh) across the palate. A slight bit of stick, so the flavor lingered - just had hoped for more.

But, man, that aroma. Got this at TJ's, so if it is still there on my next run, I am picking up a couple more bottles.

Excellent hop-forward imperial IPA. Wish I could wax philosophic on its notes & nose, but I'm a simple man who likes dry, I'm-not-drinking-a-loaf-of-bread IPAs, & Mother Earth nailed this one. Best I can say is it leans much more to the hoppy side of the equation. Sorry, BA-ers!
