Ratings are correct below, but I changed some marks above to make the final rating as close as possible with Beer Advocate's "revamped" system. The 3.95 overall rating is accurate.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Modern Times pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $8.99 (I think (lost receipt))
Purchased: May 21, 2015
Consumed: May 22, 2015
Misc.: 2015 version - 10.5 pct. ABV

Poured a golden, orange, hazy color with three fingers of frothy, white head. Could just barely see some bublles coming up along the sides of the glass. Good amount of uneven, spiderweb lacing along the sides of the glass. Average-to-above average retention. (Sight - 3.88)

Smelled pleasant hops up front of Citra, floral, Centennial and tropical. Also got nectarine, nectarine rind, caramel, peach, mango and light pineapple. (Smell - 4.13)

Initial thought on the first taste was…. funky. Got spoiled fruit, Centennial hops, Citra hops, floral hops, tropical hops, melon, pineapple, mango, tangerine rind, Grew on me late, but couldn’t quite pull the 4.00 trigger.
(Taste - 3.88)

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt finish. (Feel - 3.88)

This was just a funky beer, but the more it went down the more I thought it of the good side. (Overall - 4.00)

Clear, dark orange with a thin white film for a head that leaves an oily sheen and small specks of stick down the glass. Looks quite a bit like Pliny the Younger, which, in my opinion, is not a particularly pretty beer.

The aroma is powerful, aggressive, and probably the best aspect of the beer. I could smell the tropical and citrus fruit presence immediately when the bartender placed the glass in front of me. There's powerful grapefruit and white grape elements as well, along with sweet caramel and a touch of alcohol. A big, powerful, appropriate aroma for a triple IPA.

This is a complex triple IPA, with orange, grapefruit, melon, and grape flavors leading the way. There's also some sweet bread, high bitterness, and definite alcohol harshness. Good, though lacks finesse.

Medium to full mouthfeel with moderate to high carbonation. Very nice.

A nice effort for a somewhat difficult style. (941 characters)

22oz bottle into my FW snifter glass
Notes taken on 05/23/14

A: Lightly burnt orange color with a clouded glossy look to it . Kind of like honey in the glass. Smallish finger width of khaki cream and some mild dottings of stick run down the glass.

S: Big heady Citra hopped nose permeates grapefruit citrus zest with gooseberry, green melon, and a pinch of green Cali herbs. There is a ephemeral waft of caramel malt sweetness and some high octane alcohol but the citrus aromas almost over takes everything else. Really nice and expressively hopped nose.

T: A Citra hop blast of flavors hit the palate. Big Mother is super hoppy save for a very calmed bitterness to it. It is pretty smooth in that regards and the malt never fully materializes allowing the hops to really steal the show. Loads of grapefruit zest, gooseberry, tangerine, and melon with the slightest inclining of some freshly clipped herbs. A big boozer no doubt but it is well constructed and boosted by corn sugars I suspect. Has a dash of caramel sweetness but otherwise mostly void of any malt presence with a drying finish. Resinous on the tongue and delicious Citra hop goodness here. Well done for the massive size of this brew.

M: Only moderate filling for such a big brew. Has a creamy texture provided by some level carbonation. Nice understated hop bitterness with a bit of drying in the finish and a warming alcohol sensation. Slick and oily residues linger on the palate.

D: This really is one big Motha’. Alcohol is definitely not shy but this has some pretty nice drinkability for a Triple with great Citra hop flavors. Why folks go all gorilla feces over Younger but not a shelf turd like this is beyond me. Any who, a really fun brew to take down every now and then. Careful though, this one will thump ya! (1,799 characters)
