Poured bottle into Lost Abbey Teku

A-Pours hazy orange amber with a small off-white orangish head that leaves nice lacing.

S-Aroma is smack in your face with notes of caramel, pine and citrus.

T-Flavor starts similar, but has a lot more going on, with rich notes of grapefruit, pine resin, caramel.

M-Mouthfeel has medium body, rich oily mouthfeel. Good carbonation.

O-Overall a great DIPA that hides the ABV very well, nice sipper.

On Tap

Urge Gastropub
San Diego, CA

Clear, dark orange with a thin white film for a head that leaves an oily sheen and small specks of stick down the glass. Looks quite a bit like Pliny the Younger, which, in my opinion, is not a particularly pretty beer.

The aroma is powerful, aggressive, and probably the best aspect of the beer. I could smell the tropical and citrus fruit presence immediately when the bartender placed the glass in front of me. There's powerful grapefruit and white grape elements as well, along with sweet caramel and a touch of alcohol. A big, powerful, appropriate aroma for a triple IPA.

This is a complex triple IPA, with orange, grapefruit, melon, and grape flavors leading the way. There's also some sweet bread, high bitterness, and definite alcohol harshness. Good, though lacks finesse.

Medium to full mouthfeel with moderate to high carbonation. Very nice.

A nice effort for a somewhat difficult style.

22oz bottle into my FW snifter glass
Notes taken on 05/23/14

A: Lightly burnt orange color with a clouded glossy look to it . Kind of like honey in the glass. Smallish finger width of khaki cream and some mild dottings of stick run down the glass.

S: Big heady Citra hopped nose permeates grapefruit citrus zest with gooseberry, green melon, and a pinch of green Cali herbs. There is a ephemeral waft of caramel malt sweetness and some high octane alcohol but the citrus aromas almost over takes everything else. Really nice and expressively hopped nose.

T: A Citra hop blast of flavors hit the palate. Big Mother is super hoppy save for a very calmed bitterness to it. It is pretty smooth in that regards and the malt never fully materializes allowing the hops to really steal the show. Loads of grapefruit zest, gooseberry, tangerine, and melon with the slightest inclining of some freshly clipped herbs. A big boozer no doubt but it is well constructed and boosted by corn sugars I suspect. Has a dash of caramel sweetness but otherwise mostly void of any malt presence with a drying finish. Resinous on the tongue and delicious Citra hop goodness here. Well done for the massive size of this brew.

M: Only moderate filling for such a big brew. Has a creamy texture provided by some level carbonation. Nice understated hop bitterness with a bit of drying in the finish and a warming alcohol sensation. Slick and oily residues linger on the palate.

D: This really is one big Motha’. Alcohol is definitely not shy but this has some pretty nice drinkability for a Triple with great Citra hop flavors. Why folks go all gorilla feces over Younger but not a shelf turd like this is beyond me. Any who, a really fun brew to take down every now and then. Careful though, this one will thump ya!

Pours a cloudy, orange/brown with decent head retention.
Love the nose. It's very piney and grassy with a boozy hint to it.
Taste is pretty much what you'd expect based on the nose. Strong pine hop and grassy notes accompanied by some fruit and maltiness. Finish is a bitter and a bit boozy.

Mother Earth really knows their IPA and while this may not be the best triple I've had, it's a very good one. I'll definitely be having this one again.

This one is just plain orange in color, with some golden highlights. A pleasant foam in the big Ommegang chalice. Rich with malt but it's not such a barley bomb. Medium body with an ice pick of hoppy acidity coming down your throat. Loads of fruit. Pineapple flavors enhanced by the initial sweetness. Some sharp tastes of citrus peel.

True, this is astoundingly hoppy, but it's more aromatics and less of the tongue-buckling bitterness. I think I like a maltier brew for this much alcohol, but it's fairly sippable and certainly a mouthful of flavor. Next glassful, however, is going to be topped off with TJs Simpler Times so I can enjoy the hops without my head coming off in a smoking heap. From the 22 oz bottle, priced at $8.99 at the Olive Tree Market in Ocean Beach.

On tap at Urge, brewed for Urge by Mother Earth and served at day one of their Triple IPA nights. Supposedly honey, agave nectar, and Scottish yeast were used to brew the beer. 140 theoretical IBUs.

A: Appears dark orange in color with good clarity. A finger of white foam lingers for a minute before receding.

S: Bright and aromatic, I detect passionfruit, grapefruit, guava, orange, and white grape. Notes of honeydew blend with pine resin, grass, and earth. Malt provides balance in the form of bread and caramel. Alcohol is light in the aroma.

T: Candied grapefruit and juicy orange with balancing caramel and bread. Booze is present in the flavor but it's not harsh. There's a little honeydew melon in the late palate. Papaya blends with mango and white grape. Alcohol flavor waxes in the sweet bitter finish. There's a little astringency at the end, as well as a mint-like flavor.

M: Medium body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky and smooth.

Overall: I thought this was just okay until it warmed up a bit, then it really began to grow on me. The hop profile is great and the alcohol is not overbearing. Well done.

A - Murky orange apricot, nice small off white head leaves fast. Some cling.

S - Citrus hops and sweet malt dominate the smell.

T - I like big malt IPAs. Bit sweet center, citrus and pine clean it up.

M - Heavier, medium to heavy. Good carb, fair balance for such a big beer.

D - Overall, it is pretty tasty!
