Notes/Commercial Description:
We're pretty sure HopWired is the first bottled new world India Pale Ale made with NZ grown pale ale malt and 100% unique NZ hops. We bet you'll find nothing else like it on the shelves.

Although there's plenty of malty sweetness, this beer is all about the hops. But unlike an American IPA, which will mainly challenge you with grapefruity and pine-like flavours and aromas, the kiwi hops used in HopWired produce something more like a tropical punchbowl: Passion fruit, limes, oranges and Sauvignon Blanc grapes to name but a few. A local Marlborough winemaker even said it smelled like gooseberries... Gooseberries? When did you last actually smell a gooseberry??

Decide for yourself, or just enjoy it without further complication. Cheers!

A - Cloudy, orange/amber in colour. Just a thin white head (maybe the pour was a touch gentle), rings of lacing but short-lived ones only. A wispy cloud inhabits the surface of the beer to the end.

S - Wow that's fruity. Intense tropical fruit salad aroma of passionfruit, orange, mango, lime. Distinctive NZ hop aroma. Gorgeous. Sweet white wine and sorbet also.

T - Follows the nose with all that fruity loveliness. Very hop forward, full flavours yet for a double/imperial IPA - extremely low on bitterness.

M - Slick, moderate body. Medium carbonation. Tangy and crisp with a dry hoppy finish.

O - Beautiful beer. Extremely tasty and seriously drinkable, absolutely no indication of the 7.3% abv. As indicated, bitterness is minimal. I dont know what the IBUs are, but they cannot be too high. Certainly more of an IPA than a double. But I just love it. More!

Amber orange pour, 1 finger of off white head, spotty lacing.

Aroma is subdued in the hops arena: malts are what shine through and likely due to the freshness factor, or lack thereof.

Taste is malt forward with some moderate hop bitterness in the mix.

Mouthfeel is medium, brisk carbonation.

There is a reason they don't export these bottles with dates on them: it is a long journey from the other size of the world to the United States, where it can be challenging enough finding a fresh domestic IPA, never mind one from down under. This tasted much like other Kiwi hopped IPAs that I've had that were also past their prime: when fresh, they are excellent.
It is likely this bottle was produced 6 months ago, which is not the fault of the beer, but the end result is an underwhelming 16.9 oz. $11 bottle that will never be purchased again.

Appearance: Copper-coloured, looks filtered, white head that lasts.

Smell: Pine, Kiwi, Orange, Grassy, Apple. Nelson Sauvin is dominant.

Taste: Malt sweetness up front, then lots of tropical fruits. Lots of limes, kiwi, grapefruit. Followed by spicey pine, finishes quite bitter.

Mouthfeel: perfect. It's very thick and creamy, especially for 'only' 7.2%. Still very sparkling, which suits the taste very well

Overall: Very nice, balanced IPA. Beautiful balance between sweet malt up front and lingering bitterness as finish, also balanced in fruity vs. spicey / pine. It has depth/complexity which could make it a hate-it-or-love-it beer. I think it's very well done, and would really like this one again soon.

A: Beautiful dark copper/amber color with a light brown head.

S: Citrus, orange, pineapple, lots of tropical fruit and a sweet malt scent in the nose.

T: Very pleasantly bitter, tons of tropical fruit, a touch of pine and some orange. Delicious.

M: Medium-full bodied and smooth for an IPA.

O: This is a perfect example of what NZ hops can do to a beer. They're amazing, and the Kiwi hops used in this beer aren't even my favorite from NZ.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip pint glass.

Crystal clear, copper orange body, with lots of rising carbonation that is very thin, but noticeable. Head is soapy white and makes three fingers tall, and settles to a very shampoo like puck, with island retention and some soapy lacing.

Real nice hop front nose, juicy and rich with some tropical notes, and hints of citrus. Malt presence is a little bit subdued but the hop nose is a bit varied and lush.

Real interesting palate. Hop front comes a bit more pine like in taste and there is an incredibly toasty aroma of toasted brown sugar on the finish. Playful carbonation and almost champagne like crispness with some caramel thick malt sensations. Tropical notes hinted on the nose don't come out as obvious in flavor, but there is a nice indistinguishable hop fruit like component.

Overall it's the malt behind this I find most impressive, and the hops are utilized well and have great aroma. Real solid IPA.

Picked up a a bottle as I am trying to get every example of NZ/Australian hops I can. Hopefully pretty fresh. The beer is nice and clear in appearance, even though it is not fully filtered. Fine bubbles with decent lacing. Aroma is very nice, with the expected tropical fruit, lemon, floral and slight vanilla note. Taste is similar, with a light caramel malt backbone. Very smooth mouthfeel and no sign of the 7.3% ABV. Not a hop bomb, as it finishes lightly, but a well balanced and tasty brew with an interesting change of pace in the hops.

A: Deep gold with healthy off-white head

S: Love it. Big floral and big citrus, just a bouquet of aromas.

T: Grapefruit and floral, fresh and clean but with some tree-bark bitterness. Very nice but not the end-all-be-all either

M: No notes

O: Really enjoyed but not the best value around here. Still, those New Zealand hops do offer a bit of a different take than the typical PNW stuff I'm used to, and in a good way.
