Notes/Commercial Description:
Saisons have been around for ages. Traditionally brewed by Belgian and French farmers to provide refreshment during harvest. I'm guessing that flavour wasn't a main concern back then; the priority was to provide a beverage that was safe to drink, because water usually wasn't. Never the less, over time they developed a beverage chrarissed by beer geeks of the modern world. The alcohol content was low, so the workers could consume enough to keep hydrated and still perform their job: To load the barn with enough barley for next years brewing season. I bet these hardworking, humble farmers never imagined, that centuries later, their style of brewing would inspire brewers from all over the world. As all our beers, this is a very modern, you might say new world, interpretation of this style. Based on the tradition we have used a French Saison yeast, which provides a plethora of funky, earthy, very "Belgian" flavours. From there we have upped the ante a fair bit by doubling the amount of malt, and thereby the alcohol, and loaded the kettle with punchy Nelson Sauvin hops. Unlike the original, this is not a beer meant to be drunk by the gallon. Moderation is the key for full enjoyment of all great beers.

500ml poured to a tulip glass. Been wanting to try an 8 Wired beer for a while now.

Appearance - Hazy, somewhat dull orange color. White head starts at about a finger, ends with a mostly full cap. Some strands of lace here and there.

Smell - Mostly just Nelson Sauvin hops coming through here, which bring grapefruit juice, lime, white grape and light earthy funkiness. There is just a bit of yeast and grains present. Nice, though could use more complexity.

Taste - Mostly follows the smell, mostly all about those hops, a little less pungent and discernible though. Less 'funk', but still a good mix of grapefruit/citrus fruits and herbal/earthy flavors with a general oddball vibe about them. Again, really not much for a saison base except some slight yeasty and grainy tones.

Mouthfeel - Somewhat hefty body for the style/ABV with lowish carbonation. Low bitterness and average drinkability.

Overall - A decent example of the unique Nelson Sauvin hops, not much more to it though, it may as well be an IPA rather than a saison. Not bad, but comes off as a little boring.

500ml bottle bought at a grocery store in Blenheim on the South Island in New Zealand.

A: poured a yellow color, pale orange, with about a quarter inch of head. Poured clear, was not cloudy as others have noted.

S: spicy and earthy, hints of grass and pepper and lemon. Very very good.

T: has a somewhat earth yeasty character, with strong hints of pineapple and grapefruits. Slightly hot with alcohol. Peppery. Very nice. The NZ hops definitely set this one apart from other beers in this style.

M: about the right level of carbonation, and just about perfect thickness.

O: this is very good beer. We are on vacation here so I'm glad I saw it and snagged a bottle.

A: Dark, earthy orange with a creamy off-white head.

S: Sweet mango, pineapple, peach, and apricot in the nose.

T: Beautifully dry, spicy, mango, apple, apricot and pineapple.

M: Medium-light bodied, and fairly smooth.

O: The flavor Nelson Sauvin hops impart the most, at least to me, is pineapple, and I love it. This beer is exactly what a saison should be. Hoppy, light, but full in tropical or citric fruit flavor.

Slightly hazy bronze-tinged brass with clingy loose snowy foam that trails.
Slight barnyard and white vinegar, lemon zest, and spicy Chardonnay grapiness.
Saltines, those little yellow tropical fruit I can never remember the name of and papaya, some yeasty earth and slight clove, and serious grapefruit rind hops with hints of pineapple, mango and white grape.
Lemondrop ending and loong tart bitter linger.
Creamy but crisp, light, lively, flinty.

Been waiting to taste this one for a while, but it's not the best showcase of Nelson I've had. Not the biggest yeast profile, either, so not the most saison-y. Though there is fruit, between the yeast and IBUs it's pretty lean. But it is also balanced, easy to drink, and a credit to a top brewery.

Appearance: A bold golden/orange color to this brew. There is a medium bodied murkiness. Low head on the pour and close to zero retention while drinking. A pretty saison.

Smell: The belgian influences on this beer are felt right away. Exotic, wild yeast greets the nose with plenty of leafy greens, bread accents, and spices. There is a really solid hop base provided from the Nelson Sauvin hops which add plenty of depth to this aroma.

Taste: The front is a rather mild hop sweetness which yields to a much more present yeast body. Leafy greens and medium to dark fruits jump all over the palate. The back end and finish of the beer is a pleasant mix of starchy dryness and hop sweetness. Some slight alcohol sting is felt on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Nice transitions of hops and yeast accents. Finish is slightly hot but drinks very easily.

Overall: Nelson Sauvin hops fit right in with this Saison. Bright exotic yeast tones surprise the palate and the hops beat it up pretty well. A great change of pace beer, enjoyed sipping on this one.

I picked up a few bottles at City Beer and San Francisco. Expensive! $10.99 for a bottle marked 1 pint, .9 fluid oz.

This is so good I had to review it right away. Pours a pleasant cloudy colour. Fuller mouthfeel than many saisons I have tried. Nice subtle spices come through. Great balance. This one is just a great beer!
