A: 1/4" cream colored head over a cloudy deep reddish-amber liquid.

S: Tropical fruit, candy, mango, guava, red licorice.

T: Mango, guava, passionfruit, prickly pear nectar, and lemon peel over a biscuit and caramel malt backbone.

M: Medium to thick viscosity and a medium level of fine carbonation.

O: Quite bitter but very pleasing offering from 8 wired that is full of tropical fruit flavour.

Now here’s one to really get excited about: 8 Wired Super Conductor DIPA (Double India Pale Ale to our novice readers). If you want to get a taste of NZ’s finest look no further than 8 Wired. Even though I’ve only had their Hopwired, which was a slice of heaven “slice of heaven, yeah” *sung in my highest falsetto*, I could tell from that one IPA that all of their brews are good. How? Years of beer drinking experience. In any case I am chuffed *pronounced in my Kiwiest accent* to be trying Super Conductor... [don’t you dare say it!] choice bro! [dammit I’ve had enough your jokes, I’m outta here!] Fine. I don’t need you anyway braaaain(s)...

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Clear(ish) straw coloured body with a boisterous 2cm white head that sticks around quite well considering the 8.8% ABV... Overall it could do with a little bit of haze but otherwise top marks 8 Wired. 9/10.

S: Much like the Hopwired the balance is even keeled between malt and hops with upfront notes of sweet caramel, honey, grapefruit with a note of guava. Further inspection reveals that classic pine resin hop note that one would find in a West Coast IPA... mmm, sweet & complex, like a Japanese rock band covered in syrup. 8/10.

T: The bottle proclaims “intense bitterness” but it really isn’t that bad compared to any American DIPA... it’s actually spot on for balance. Toasty caramel, honey, grapefruit and pine resin combine into a world class flavour arrangement on the palate. There is a real “forest floor” character with the hops, and the finish is a grapefruit level of bitterness. This is a damn fine DIPA syrup! 9/10.

M: Medium bodied, a touch of chewiness (and I’m not making a clever Star Wars reference but this is one hairy beer) with a light(ish) carbonation. 8/10.

D: And perhaps the biggest thing I will point out here is that it doesn’t taste close to being 8.8% ABV (apart from the viscous body)... I’m really impressed again with 8 Wired, they seem to go from strength to strength. Negatives: It isn’t a DIPA hopped with NZ’s finest - you won’t find any Nelson Sauvin or Motueka flavours in this beer - just US hops all the way (the stats on this beer say US and NZ hops but I think the US varieties have overpowered the NZ ones, damn loud American hops!). If you want an example of NZ hops I would get Tuatara’s Trouble² or Epic’s Hop Zombie... I prefer this brew though. 10/10.

Food match: I wouldn’t attempt to eat anything that wasn’t chargrilled with this.

I enjoy this brewery's output and I was stoked to see another DIPA to savor.

Pours a mild copper color with a frothy white head in my glass. Color's in the middle of the spectrum but any darker and I'd be suspicious.

I'm going to guess Nelson Sauvin as far as the hops are concerned. "Fruity" with a good whiff of grapefruit and apricot. Pungent.

Very crisp, bitter hop characteristics that start off with a grapefruit/mango/apricot vibe and cascade into what could be piney in a manner.

Lingering alcohol warmth with a strong pine residue and very little of the citrus. The finish could be nicer but it still works.

An adventurous DIPA that incorporates New Zealand hops to create this interpretation of the style. I believe this is another brewery to watch as far as innovation is concerned.

Drank from my Duvel tulip

A - Pours a deep cloudy copper colour with a nice two fingered head that reduces to a film and laces. Very nice

S - Heaps of hop, sweet toffee malts, grapefruit. Pungent aromas of herb.

T - Super heavy hop flavours that smooth out into toffe mals with a bitter finish.

M - Coates your tongue in a thick film of heavy malt. The carbonation is medium.

O - I don't normally like big IPA's, but I sure can appreciate this one for what it is. It has all the hallmarks of a big IPA. Recommended although your taste buds will be shot

Drank from my Duvel Tulip

A - Pours a copper/orange colour with white frothy foam head that laces well

S - Pungent on the nose, massive hoppiness including apricots, grapefruit, lemon/orange zest and peach.

T - The taste is similiar, loads of citrus fruit including grapefruit, some passionfruit and slight bitter lemon, a hint of malt biscuit and caramel.

M - Medium bodied with good medium carbonation

O - A wonderful beer that is balanced, love the hoppiness together with the slight bitter finish. A must try!

500ml bottle poured into tulip 12/2/13

A clear light copper with some bubbles of all sizes feeding a two finger off white head that retains well and leaves a few rings followed by some random patches

S mango, passion fruit, pineapple, lemon, lime and guava round out the tropical fruit notes, there's a fair amount of pine and toffee in there too. pretty solid nose with a nice blend of tropical notes, pine and sugars, about what I look for in a DIPA

T the tropical notes are more focused towards rind and its very piney compared to the nose, there's a little booze but fairly well concealed considering the strength, rind and pine are strong on the finish

M leaning towards full, slightly creamy from the bubbles with a nice bitter bite, slick after the fact with very faint heat

O no complaints from this guy, another great DIPA from the Kiwis, great hop profile with a little tropical twist on a US style West Coast, well done

I could drink another and I probably will, I'm starting to sound like a broken record but this is yet another great addition to the shelves here in Alberta
