12oz can into a pint glass. I've been looking forward to trying something from this brewery!

Pours a hazy brownish orange with a one finger white head. Nice fluffy head has good staying power and some pretty nice lacing on the sides of the glass.

Aroma has a very orange/tangerine quality mixed with an almost Belgiany yeasty spicyness. It is definitely unique but works quite well. Some bready malt comes through in the background.

The flavor continues the tangeriane and orange character almost approaching a dreamsicle-like flavor. Maybe touches of cream and vanilla in there. I love the hops in this one. Some light bready malt is present to lend some balance to the hops. High bitterness that finishes with a light sticky sweetness.

Overall, a very nice IPA that stands out from so many others being made by small breweries. An enjoyable beer and one to pick up should you come across it.

Poured from the can into a standard pint glass a clear amber/copper with a nice one finger slight off white head atop that lasted for quite awhile.Aromas of citric hops over top of a hefty caramel/biscuit malt base, the hops win out with the deep citric and resiny notes.Grapefruit and a nd pine resin really hit nicely at the onset of the beer, the maltiness is pretty big holding up nicely to the hops and adding mild caramel sweetness. This is a "bigger" standard IPA,big hops with quite a malt base that hold up to it.

Superb appearance. Head has staying power! Poured this beer into a tulip glass, walked away to put a pot of water on, pulled the veggies out of the fridge, the pasta out of the pantry, and fired up the laptop to write this review; when I walked back to the glass, the head was still as thick as when I walked away. I watched it for another two minutes and then poured the rest in carefully. Great amber color too. Aroma is of sweet grain and tangy hops. The taste is about the same as the aroma, with a bit more caramel flavor. Not great, but decent. Mouthfeel is pretty okay too. Good beer, but I wouldn't pick it up again. I must thank thatoneguymike for sending me this along with several other AL and SC brews.

(Served in a tulip glass)
A-This beer pours a clear deep orange body with a slow microcarbonation that supports a thick creamy beige head.

S- The full aroma of dried citrus hops comes through even during the pour. There are some spice hop notes that are layered underneath.

T- The dry green citrus pith hops has a slight sweetness in the caramel malt that follows. There is a sweetness hint that lingers with the green spicy note to the hops, but little bitterness. The nice pungency stains the tongue after each sip.

M- The medium-full body has a creamy texture and no alcohol heat noticed. The tight little fizz enhances the hop flavor

O- The full big delicious IPA has a big pungent floral flavor with some nice spice character to add depth. The malt sweetness is just enough to keep this beer dry but support the hops flavor. Thanks to Coldchill for this brew.

pours a light orange color body, with a full white creamy head

smells of aromatic citrus hops, not much of a malty smell, but fits the style

taste is bitter up front with medium alpha acid hops, not much of a lingering aftertaste

the feel is very dry, a little too dry but still fits the style

overall this beer is outstanding, from the best brewery in ALABAMA!

The Monkeynaut....to me...is more of an English IPA and an American PA. It is very bitter. The beer pours a nice clear copper with thin white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent is mostly bitter hops...maybe hints of pine and citrus....but not much. The taste is bitter with a bready type malt for balance. The mouthfeel is medium in body with smooth carbonation. Overall this isnt a bad beer....but its not one that I would session. The ABV and bitterness keeps it from being a all night beer.

Many thanks to kkipple for the can! You’re the man!

Monkeynaut pours an attractive copper color. It’s very clear. No haze at all. Backlighting gives it a nice orange tint. A really nice off-white head covers it. It’s big, standing over two and a half fingers tall. Retention was very good. I’m not sure it will completely disappear. Lacing was very sticky and thick as it trailed down the glass.

The nose is alright. It could use a little more strength. It kicks off with a little more caramel malt than I’d like. That’s definitely the base. Smells a little sugary and quite sweet. That’s a bit of a cracker-ish scent in there, as well. Hops are easily noted and have primarily a citric scent. Lemon, grapefruit, and light orange are noted. There’s a good dose of pine that follows. Alcohol is blended pretty well and isn’t all that noticeable. Smells pretty good.

The flavor is about on par with the nose. The malt base is caramel. It is sweet and is quite prominent in the flavor. Not my favorite thing. There are some sugar cookie and cracker notes, as well. Hops jump into the mix early. They are mostly citric. Grapefruit, lemon, and orange are all noted. Piney notes follow. It’s a little bitter, but it’s pretty well balanced given the strong malt base. Alcohol isn’t too much of a factor. It’s there, but isn’t too strong. Finishes with a nicely balanced mix of caramel, citric, and piney flavors.

Monkeynaut has a medium body. Carbonation seems active, but the bubbles feel rather light. The feel is pretty nice and smooth. It’s relatively easy drinking. If the flavor were just a little better, drinkability would be excellent.

Monkeynaut is an okay release from Straight to Ale. It’s a little malt heavy for my taste, but it’s not bad. Especially considering…it’s from ALABAMA! That’s a fact you just can’t ignore. Knowing that, I’m thrilled for the entire state of Alabama. Good things appear to be happening there. Worth a try? Most definitely. Thanks, Dan!
