Poured fresh off-tap into a 64-oz growler, then into a series of 16oz well-chilled Pilsner glasses. Given a less than stellar performance of the Monkeynaut IPA, I found this a pleasant up-offering on that Straight-to-Ale bottling, with a pronounced citrus hoppiness that gives way to a smooth orange and resinous follow-on.

Terrific pour with decent head, I compare this favorably to Stone's Ruination and other classic America Double/Imperial IPAs. Very smooth from first pour to end of glass, no off-flavors and complexity just about perfect for a DIPA/Imperial. The occasional honey-sweet grapefruit/citrus after-taste makes this a near-perfect beer for a hot summer day, not too filling, just right for cool-down.

Pours a golden light amber with ample off white head - nice retention and lacing.

Smells of floral, pungent bitter citrus and resinous earthy pine.

Taste starts with bitter citrus giving way to some sweet orange. A thick biscuity malt comes through for a brief moment before it is dominated by resinous pine. A decent II IPA, but a little too much conflict in the flavors. Needs some harmony and a little less pungency to be great.

Rich, sweet and creamy. Hoppy enough to make it a DIPA and malty enough to make it interesting and drinkable. Very well balanced with just the right amount of carbonation. Makes it even more worth visiting Alabama. This is on3 company I wish woukd sell farther north.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a Spieglau IPA glass. Great pour, great looking, deep copper color with a thick head. Great lacing and retention. Smells of fresh hop, grass, earth, floral. This beer has such a rich and pungent hop flavor that finishes with a great balance of bitterness and malt. Somewhat boozy in taste as expected. Heavier in body and mouthfeel, perfect for a Imperial IPA. Overall a fantastic beer. Haven't had a beer from STA that I don't like.

Freshness: Not indicated
Packaging: 22 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Nonic pint
Purchased: Single from Midtown, Nashville

Clear and bright copper-colored beer, with 4 fingers of cream-colored head. Lacing is fair with a great head retention.

Smell has a huge amount of tropical fruits plus some floral hop elements, with a backbone of caramel malt aromas.

The taste is heavily weighted to the big hop bitterness but there's always some malt in their to keep things from being one-sided. Flavors are citrus and tropical fruits; grapefruit primarily.

Thick in body, the finish is much like the initial tastes; a big citrus hop bomb with an undercurrent of a little malt sweetness.

Overall a delicious DIPA that could just as easily pass for an American style barleywine.

Poured from 22 oz bomber into snifter glass.

A: Pours a deep honey brown with 2 finger fluffy white head. Some nice retention, but it settled to a small ring around the edge with some minimal spotty lacing.

S: Big punch of citrus. Grapefruit and mango dominate the nose. Biscuit and honey mixed with a piney punch at the end.

T: Complex mix of hop bitterness, and some tropical fruit sweetness. Again, I'm getting a fair amount of grapefruit and mango. The faint sweetness reminds me of honey.

M: Lots of hop resin gives this a bit of an oily texture. It finishes quite dry and bitter.

O: Interesting Imperial IPA. Lots of hops to enjoy and balanced fairly well with just a touch of sweetness. Not something I want for everyday, but this is a nice occasional brew which works well with its seasonality.

Fantastic local brew and fantastic brew all together. Deep dark color with hints of dark fruit. Sticky but in a good way. Doesn't get better as it warms. Quite bitter. Sort of boozy but not overwhelming. Very complex. Very tough to get in a bomber so on tap was my only option. I can't imagine it tasting this good out of a bottle.
