A growler filled last Saturday at the brewpub. My first visit without the monsters in tow. Freedom!
A; The hefe is isn't as dark as in the dark-lit bar. Golden straw colored, the haziness is evident but not overpowering. A thick, voluminous head, over three fingers on the first two pours with a legs spidering around the glass.
S: The nose has sweet apricot in a starring role. The weizen's wheat and cloves are just below the surface, an equally sweet pairing with the apricot. Tartness loiters about.
T: Tart wheat, not pucker-up tart, and sweet apricot juice provide a nice one-two punch. Weizen-like flavors struggle to peek through the strength of the apricot juice. The apricot isn't cloying, however, just a difficult flavor to sneak past. The telltale clove waits until late in each sip to reveal itself, nestled between the apricot start and the, well, apricot finish. A refreshing beer, even with the weizen aspect well-restrained.
M: The mouthfeel is sweetly sour, with apricot juice providing both contrasting flavors. The drinkability is high, an interesting take on the German classic. I need to make my way back north to try River House's regular hefeweizen for comparison's sake.
