Stopped in here for an early dinner after the (512) second anniversary, 28 Aug 2010.

Sat upstairs on the covered porch. Full bar upstairs with seating at the bar as well as 15-20 tables for four. About 25 beers on tap, including several selections each from (512), Independence and Real Ale (I had the Real Ale Saison). Also had Sierra Nevada and Victory along with a few others. Maybe 15 or 20 mixed drinks too.

Menu was more or less standard pub food with a TexMex bent. Had the chips & salsa and the onion rings as appetizers. The salsa was tasty without being too hot and the onion rings were decent, not too greasy which was good. Several soft taco dishes to choose from, I had the ribeye tacos with black beans.

Some games downstairs including what looked like space for board games and shuffleboard.

Kid friendly, or at least the kids in our group were well tolerated by the other patrons and staff. Prices were decent.

Overall pretty good and would go back when in the area.

I like coming here because they are definitely supportive of local breweries. The selections they have are usually small, but I think they make it up by rotating some new beers fairly often. There's always some new specials or special tap nights.

The menu is probably the weakest spot for this restaurant. While many of the appetizers are rather good, there are other foods (at least the ones I tried) are hit-and-miss items. I usually like the Border Burger (the serrano pepper is gonna hit you harder than your momma ever spanked you) but couple of other dishes could be improved.

The best aspect of this place is the selections of beer and some other liquors. The next best thing is the ambience and the ability to sit outside when it's comfortable outside. There's plenty of outdoor spaces along with outdoor games you can play.

Arrived on a Wednesday night during Spring Break/SXSW week. It was starting to fill up but no wait for a table. Very outdoors feel to the place. Even the inside had garage door walls that were opened on this perfect Austin evening. Beautiful view of the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Decent selection of locals plus a few non-local crafts (Lefthand Stout on nitro!). Service was prompt, food was reasonably good, a cross between Tex-Mex, Cajun, and Pub Food (tacos, po-boys, and burgers).

High point - Great outdoor atmosphere. I would imagine this would be different if I went there in August.

Low point - I would have liked more taps to choose from, decent but not great selection.

Worth a return visit for beer or food.

Red's is a bar of three halves. There's the bar itself, downstairs and indoors, there's the outside area and the upstairs open air bar where you can watch the sun go down over the Green Belt.

Downstairs it's a bit of a sports bar with multiple screens around the room but they're pretty easy to blank out if that's not your cup of tea. The ambience is kind of basic, unless you can grab a seat in the nook off to the side where there's a bunch of sofas.

The beer selection is pretty good, and it's the main reason I go there. Plenty of local Austin beer on tap plus a good range from around the country. There's a rotating hop tap which pleases an old hophead like me.

The food... well, it is what it is. It's filling and reasonably priced, but you can always tell when a meal has been made with cost the main priority over quality (in other words, about 95% of eating places). I eat there about once a week on average, but usually out of necessity (had a long day at work and I don't want to cook, and Red's is across the street from where I live) rather than choice. But I do eat there and always come away feeling satisfied.

Red's is a unique place, for sure, with the outside area and the upstairs bar. It comes across as being run by people who care about what they're doing and know good beer, and it attracts people who are just out to have a good time without getting out of control. Be aware though, it can get really busy around happy hour, especially when the weather's good.
