Fantastic neighborhood pub. This pub was actually THE deciding factor in my moving to Utica. Constant quality tap rotations, reasonable prices, pretzels, a great juke box and NO TV all make this pub all great.
Across the street is a fantastic coffee shop, a craft beer shop, and a great pizza joint. You can bring take out in or order for delivery while there.

First, if you are driving from downtown on Genesee St. be carefull. The crafty Utica police dept. has found places to hide that no one would ever think of.I had never been here before so took a look around because of the history. Very comfortable inside and very small maybe seating for 35.I sort of came here at the wrong time as the week before they had a Sierra Nevada fest so all of the taps but I think three were SN beer. They did have SN foam, a pilsner that I never had or even heard of and it was very good, light, refreshing and just easy to drink.
A very friendly group at the bar, everyone was chatting with each other.I will return next year.

In the pit that is central New York there are little to no bars that provide good beer without lousy customers; especially in Utica. The Green Onion is a small yet welcoming bar with friendly staff, a laid back atmosphere, and chill clientele. The bar resides in the former ticket office to the Uptown Theater on Genesee Street a couple miles away from the piss-water BMC scene of Varick Street. The owners have worked hard to make a good craft bar with great offerings.
The beer selection on tap rotates regularly although Uncle Charlie is always on tap as a local staple. GOP also regularly serves NY breweries such as Ithaca, Southern Tier, Ommegang, and Saranac. The Green Onion manages to provide occasional rarities in Central New York from breweries such as Founder's and Cigar City.
The GOP is one of the very few places worth going to between Syracuse and Albany if you're looking for good beer, good prices, and good company.

I tried a few of the Ommegang Abbey Ales on tap and they were very good. Clean tap lines are not always the standard in bars that I go to. Beer tasted fresh and had proper legs down the glass. The bartender was a big tall lanky doofus with a bird face and hair like the bride of Frankenstein, but he was very attentive and had a great knowledge of the beers on tap. I had a flight of 5 beers at 5 oz each for $8 and enjoyed them all - they were Dogfish 60 min, Franziskaner, Ithaca 13, Utica Club, and Southern Tier Cuvee III. The crowd was friendly and mostly in their 30's and older. The guy next to me hogged the juke box, but it seemed like decent stuff playing the whole time. In between a rush of customer the witty bald bartender invited me to play darts. He was not unlike Moe the bartender on the Simpsons. He appeared to be a fine drinking and life coach when speaking to him. I promptly defeated him, with the tall bartender calling next game. While mesmerized with the tall bartenders Kramer- like shirt and completely unique fashion sense, my dart game was a bit distracted. I pulled out the win in the end and gave up the dart board to some attractive young ladies who had come in to drink red wine and giggle about the follies of each other.
The bathroom had ample toilet paper and was decorated tastefully. I was told there was a pub trivia night and some free food around 5pm on some weeknights. I was off to have a quick beer at Shortys and The Auburn, both across the street. It was a nice mini bar crawl. I will be back to The Green Onion Pub

Research showed little of quality in Utica area for a nice evening of brew but this place lived up to it's A rating. Nice selection of beer, locals will chat when they are comfortable with you - Nick the bartender on the evening I was there = quality. Don't miss this place if you are in Utica, or if you must be in Utica like I had to be on business - only problem, three beer limit because I was driving & last one was a big beer (10% smooth). Reasonable price for quality beer $6 & a bristle board for darts as well (invited to play and was not a worthy opponent.

The Green Onion Pub in Utica, New York offers a very relaxed and inviting atmosphere, and quite possibly the best "tap for tap" 12 brew selection that I have encountered for a bar this size.
Imagine that you're walking into a pub in New York City. You know the layout; a long narrow room, stools at the bar on the left, with small tables and chairs at the opposite wall. That's the layout at the Onion, except the room is not as long.
It's a really comfortable setting ... extremely friendly, knowledgeable bartenders, and a clientele who are mix of lager drinkers and "Ba" members who can hardly believe their great fortune at finding such a place "in the neighborhood."
This should get you salivating (as of 4.23.2010):
Rogue Mocha Porter
Newcastle Brown Ale
Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout
Magic Hat 9
Saranac Black Forest
Utica Club Lager
There is also a 20-30 bottled-beer menu which includes Duvel, Old Rasputin, Abbey Ale, and some macro brewery labels to satisfy guests who have not yet been "saved." (hehe)
There's an incredible jukebox AND NO TV (a great victory for our civilization, IMO). The jukebox has a range of "albums" including, but not limited to: WAR, The Grateful Dead, Dean Martin, Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane!
The emphasis at The Green Onion is most definitely to provide a setting for people who enjoy good music, good conversation, and quality craft brews on tap. My first visit was a thoroughly enjoyable (and delicious) experience.
I almost forgot one of the most intriguing parts of the experience! The Onion is housed, literally, in an old theater building on Genesee Street in South Utica. From across the street, you are in full view of the theater's facade and center-door entrance. If you glance to the left of the center-doors, you'll see another door and glass front-walls lining the sidewalk, still part of the theater building ... BUT IT'S NOT A TICKET OFFICE, it's The Green Onion!
Now, that's cool. That's The Onion.
