Growler from Mainbrew. 5 bucks for a 750.

Pouring black with dark brown highlights, this beer is capped with a reverse cascading head that's dark brown, leaving lots of intricate lacework. Gorgeous. The nose is great. I can't believe this is 4.5%. Rich, roasty, chocolate-y, moderate oatmeal, mild sweetness, a little bit of smoke, a touch of vanilla, this is just incredibly layered and remarkably well structured. A little bit of fruit, a little bit of acridity, this is close to perfect for the style.

The palate opens creamy with a rich, velvety texture, with the roast, dark chocolate and bitter coffee coming through. This beer is unique among oatmeal stouts in that there's very little of the oatmeal flavor, but with all of it's smoothness on the palate. Mild fruity/vinous acidity ( blend of raisins and berry and grape-like acidity), there's some grainy acridity/acidity as well. Medium-bodied with a creamy carbonation, this beer is rather rich on the palate, surprisingly so for the ABV, with a finish that has lingering coffee bitterness, a little fruit, and oatmeal silken characteristics. Excellent stuff, I'd love to try this on cask.

From cask at the Horse Brass Pub in Portland, OR.

Pours a deep black colour, with an impressive, crackling brown head: sudsy, frothy and turgid from the hand pump. Body looks solid and firm, especially considering it's a pretty light beer.

Sweet roasted characters on the nose, with a hint of savoury malt which gives it a twang of smokiness and the richness of BBQ. Really very pleasant indeed.

Taste is very light, and despite all illusions to the contrary, not that thick and rich, so the pull from the cask that leaves it so velvety but uncarbonated doesn't help it that much. Mild light maltiness comes through with a smooth roast that never leaves any bite (although no harshness either). More of that BBQ sweetness, and a hint of milkiness or perhaps the oatmeal. It's very solid, although the feel is surprisingly dim and dull from a cask.

Overall, it's a good beer. But it got less and less exciting the more I drank. After getting over the novelty of a properly pulled hand-pumped stout, it just got more and more pedestrian to me.

On cask at Horse Brass in Portland, OR.

A finger of tan head, black body, nice lace.

Sweet, toffee chocolate nose. Nice, faintly tart.

Mild and faintly sweet with a bit of coffee bean tart/bitter character. The finish is coffee, but a bit of leafy hop tang.

Smooth, cask-y feel, carbonation almost absent.

Nice stout, as described. Not too dry, but not really sweet.

This stuff is a very solid oatmeal stout. Smell is caramelly toffeelike and delicious. Taste is of roasted barley and black patent malt with a slight hoppy background. Body is well balanced; it is light enough to drink the whole pint and want more yet packs a big malty flavor. Definitely one of my favorite oatmeal stouts. One of my favorite parts has got to be the carbonation. What is the deal with these overcarbonated stouts? This one gets it right by packing a light carbonation, making the flavor enhanced, not covered by carbonation. No complaints here. Sorry

Poured from the nitro tap at the brewery.

What a difference a little nitrous makes on this brew. The aromatics and flavor seem more settled, and better integrated from this tap.

I can now pick up some dark cherry, cocoa, and licorice in addition to the espresso and tar notes. There is still a lot of tannin on the palate, but the acidity and carbonation (nitronation?) bring the flavors up to meet and greet those aggressive tannins.

Still would like a bit more sweetness to help balance the tannins (no not a SWEET beer, just that barely perceptible amount of sugar on the palate to give more viscosity and fight down the tannins). This would actually be a great base to brew up a chocolate stout.

Still not getting an 'oatmeal' style to this...

I DO love this stout on tap and enjoy it when e'er I get a chance! The colour is as black as onyx and there's no head. The aroma is roasty with plenty of coffee, light hops and dark chocolate. The palate has plenty of malt and coffee with a very creamy mouthfeel and a delightfully long finish. I really wish all the Mt. Hood Brewing beers had this much effort put into them!

This is a permanent cask at The Horse Brass and I was advised not to miss it, in fact, I believe it was ordered for me.

Pours very dark brown, nearly black, with a small light brown head. The head quickly dissipates (doesn't seem to be a fresh cask).

The aroma has light coffee, toasted caramel, and chocolate notes, with nice oatmeal undertones and no noticeable hop character. No alcohol is present in the nose. The flavor is of oatmeal, chocolate, and bitter coffee. The beer is smooth as hell, and hands down the most flavorful stout I've ever had under 5%. I could drink the hell out of this.

The mouthfeel is creamy and silky smooth.

Amazingly flavorful yet light on the palate...rare for a stout.

I have to be careful reviewing this, because I drank this beer while sitting in the Timberline Lodge, looking up at the majestic glaciated peak of Mount Hood, the brewery's namesake. Most beers would be good in this setting, and this one is no exception. But, alas, it's not among my premier stout choices. It is an attractive beer, very dark brown with a dark tan head that produces a nice lacing. The aroma is toasted malt, and on the palate the main impression is that of a coffee-flavored stout with very dry character. Good medium mouthfeel for a stout. Nicely carbonated and reasonably drinkable. The finish is nicely bittered. Overall a nice stout, but not a star.

Found some old notes on this one. Served on cask at Horse Brass in Portland.

Appearance: Black with dark brown highlights and a soft but ever-lasting tan head. This is one seriously appetizing stout.

Smell: The aroma is a gentle mix of dark chocolate brownies, vanilla and roasted barley.

Taste & mouthfeel: Semi-sweet with a big silky texture despite the low ABV. This stuff is smooth as hell. The flavor is very brownie-like; dark chocolate and toast with vanilla undertones. The finish is on the dry side with a mild roasty bitterness. Carbonation is low from the cask conditioning, but it only serves to enhance the beer's velvety texture and incredible drinkability.

Notes: During the 3 trips I made to Horse Brass this was the beer I kept coming back to. A near-perfect Oatmeal Stout.

I tried this on cask at the Horse Brass on a business trip to Portland.

It's a jet black stout with a beige head. It's got a roasted, chocolate aroma. The flavor is primarily of roasted malt but with a trailing sweetness. It's a bit thin in the mouth but very satisfying.

I really liked this one and look forward to trying others from Mt Hood.

Tried this on-tap at Henry's 12th Street Tavern in Portland, Oregon. Poured opaque black with a small, tan head. Pretty good retention. Nice aromas and flavors of dark-roasted coffee, oats, dark chocolate, and fruit like raisins or cherries. Some bitterness from the coffee and choclate. Overall, great character, nicely balanced flavors. Smooth, moderately thick mouthfeel from the oats. Very drinkable. Good example of an oatmeal stout.

This is one damn fine looking stout. Pitch black like a mountain night. Completely opaque with a mocha head that leaves great thick laceing.

Man I was not expecting any thing like this. Thick, chocolatey aromas with a nutty, lactose and oat must. So chocolatey delicious in the nose. Very hot fudge like with the sweetness.

Pleasantly suprised again. A rich roast on the mid palate adds a smokey character to the finish. Thick creamy mouth with a hop bitterness on the finish. Decent RS on the finish as well and very easy drinking. Lactose is very apparent. A pungent black currant really points a finger, and has some black cherry as well. Nice!!!

appearance: served in an imperial pint glass...dark mahogany body with a light chocolate head and very little in the way of lacing...pretty standard

smell: huge oat nose, smoky, defined milk chocolate presence, a very nice and sweet aroma

on cask at Horse Brass. fantastic beer I can't believe I've missed on my previous trips.

it was 85 or so yesterday, but I sucked this down without a second thought. The previous reviewers have said it well: nice nearly black color, big creamy light brown head. Between the cask and the oats this is sinfully silky and smooth in the mouth. Tons of chocolate (in the nose too), lighter roasty coffee flavors, a nice little bitterness, and nearly perfect residual sweetness. A "6" in taste.

Perhaps I'd rate the draft version lower, but until then this is instantly the best oatmeal stout I've ever had. Sessionable for sure, hot weather be damned.

Served on draft from Ice Ax Grille at Mt Hood Brewery.
A deep dark, black beer with a nice 3/4" tan head that slowly faded to about an 1/8", but remained until the last sip. Very strong coffee and chocolate notes, but not so much that it's overwhelming like other oatmeal stouts of the past - you can still easily taste the locally grown hops in this treat. This is by far, the best OS I have ever tasted!! A must try if you are in the area!!

Appearance: On tap at Cornucopia in Eugene, OR. No light passes through this black beer, sticky foamy tan head shows good retention, lacing caps the beer, inviting.

Smell: Sweet roasted malt, chocalatey and milky, suggestions of molasses.

Taste: Chocolatey malt sweetness, caramel, tasty oatmeal flavor and creaminess comes out, a hint of espresso acidity balances, hops play a role in the finish and aftertaste, a little spicy.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and creamy, a rolling subtle carbonation, this goes down very nicely.

Drinkability: This is a badass oatmeal stout. If you're in the NW, hunt it down. Very tasty, creamy, oatmeal, and sweet. At only 4.5% ABV I could have several of these.

Served from draft (CO2) in a shaker pint at the Ram's Head bar at Timberline, the hogsback is a really nice looking beer. It is pitch black with a dense head that is a gorgeous dark tan with amber tones around the edges. It subsided to a very thick skim quicker then I would have liked, and didn't leave much lace, but was only a swirl away from revival.
I wasn't really too impressed with the aroma. At first, it was really roasty with a bit of coffee, and pretty reserved. As it warmed, it was dominated almost entirely by caramel, and grew stronger, as well as a bit boozy.
The taste sort of followed the aroma, starting out pretty subdued and on the bitter side, more chocolate then coffee, but predominately roasted malt. As it warmed, it got very rich and sweeter, still malt but mainly caramel, and maybe a touch of anise. This wasn't my favorite oatmeal stout, but I've not had to many from the NW, mainly from back east, and British varieties.
The mouthfeel was very nice, silky and not nearly as heavy as it appears.
This was fairly drinkable, but not the religious experience that the other reviewers seemed to have. Had I read those reviews before trying this beer, I'd have been disappointed. As it was, I thought it was not bad, but nothing special for an oatmeal stout. I'll probably only try this again if I see it on Nitro, or it's the only stout available and I'm in that mood. I guess I should also consider that it is mid-spring and the keg at timberline might not have been the freshest...I dunno, those other reviews are making me look for excuses that it might not deserve!

Hmmmm…… Only 4 reviews, huh? Never ceases to amaze me how few reviews there are for many PacNW beers. I’ll chime in and agree with the remarks of the last 2 reviewers in terms of the taste of this beer. They have it covered. Now interestingly, the first two reviews are less than a week apart from back in 2003, and they both note a tartness to the beer that reviewers 3 and 4 evidently didn’t experience, and I didn’t either. Makes me wonder if there wasn’t something about that particular batch. In any event, in my never humble opinion, this stuff is Nectar of the Beer Gods, and is my undisputed choice as the best small beer I have ever had in any style. I’ve had it on cask at Horse Brass, and on nitro and CO2 at the pub in Government Camp. Been drinking it for a few years now during my frequent visits to the area, and it is consistently great. I like very few small beers, but I LOVE this one.

My first pint at the Horse Brass tonight..
and what a topper of a beer to look at it is!.Black ,with small purplish hints round the edges and a fantastic frothy/creamy tan head, that stayed and stayed.
Great aroma the roasty oats are very present among the dellectable aromas of black coffee and chocolate.
The taste is absolutllygorgeous, the dark coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, black cherriesd, roasted /toasted oats..wonderful combination.
Very smooth and silky on the mouth, improved somewhat by the cask.
A great Oatmeal stout, one that deserves better recognition..superb drinkability.

This is the kind of beer that has me reaching for those infrequently used descriptives like sublime, transcendent, masterful, or perhaps bucolic, dharma inducing, blissed out, or really, really good. It honestly makes me misty eyed to even contemplate the glory, the ecstasy, the eternal bliss emanating from this humble pint of perfection. It’s beautiful, man. It’s just firkin beautiful.

Hogsback is a session stout of tremendous character with a dark splashy head, a lush chocolaty aroma, and an uncommon softness of texture. The taste is both gentle and rich with a touch of coffee and a faint hint of actual licorice.

My pint was cask-conditioned and served almost warm. It was so seductively drinkable it’s frightening. So good it's nearly erotic.

Nice dark body with a large amount of light brown head that just invites you to drink it. This has a good tart and bitter smell. The taste is wonderfully thick with a nice malt oatmeal stout taste, that moves into a tart and almost sour taste (much like that of sour cherries). This is a nice heavy oatmeal brew with a nice bitter tart taste. There is a bit of residual sweetness that is left on the lips when done drinking, which just invites you to drink more. All around a good oatmeal stout.

This is the first time I've actually encountered a Mt. Hood beer in person. Without having any frame of reference, I can only hope the flavors of the beer were entirely intentional.

Imperial pint of this stuff, deep brown body with an amazingly speckled brown and bubbly head, almost like an oatmeal topping. A very fragrant aroma of malts, hops and fruit. A lift past the foam reveals a wonderfully tart and smooth stout. Creamy taste with an almost tart cherry bite. Finishes with dry coffee and chocolate flavors and a slight bitterness smoothed by the oatmeal. Maybe a pour choice for a first beer, this is a delicious desert, though it may become a slight bit tart towards the finish. Stands well alone, not as complimentary with food.
