Pours bright copper with a decent head, fades to a superb lace. On the nose there is plenty of fresh, zingy hops but not much else noticeable. On the palate the flavors are intense with toast, wood, spice, and fresh hops with a medium weight intensity. Mellow on the finish with some kick here and there from the hops. Overall a lighter less intense style of IPA, fresh and not too bitter.

Tasted again at the brewery June 2010:

Similar notes, very dry and roasted style of malt and hops. Not green at all. Good but rather underwhelming.

Appearance: (4.0)

- This beer is mostly clear, and a nice dark caramel color. Orange really. There was a nice chunky foam finger of head at the pour, and what is left is a chunky spotty layer over the brew with a bit of a ring of lace. Overall looks like a good English style IPA.

Smell: (3.5)

- Certainly a wonderful aroma of darker more creamy flavored malts in the nose. Light brown sugar, wheat, and a baked bready aroma. Light grassy and earthy hops lend a little aroma, but not so much. Not bad smelling for the style. But certainly not a typical NW IPA.

Taste: (3.5)

- This is one balanced and tasty brew. There is a nice subtle punch of very early boil hops that lend this beer some killer bitterness with its grassy an zesty hops. Certainly a little spice kick to them. The smooth caramel and bready malts really provide the balance. Lovely full flavor for being as light as it is in ABV.

Mouth Feel: (4.0)

- This beer has a pretty big body and is very nicely carbonated. Nice creamy texture, and isn't overly sticky or chewy. It's nice bitterness doesn't make it at all too drying either. It's quite nice.

Overall: (4.0)

- This is a solid beer from start to finish. It's also a nice IPA to let warm up a little to really get a lot out of its malt character. Nice bready grain flavors and a super good and unique bitterness to balance. Certainly worth the try. It's quite the session beer as well, and also a meal in a bottle.

A: Poured a copperish dark orange color with good carbonation leaving a nice white cap

S: Floral notes, caramel is what I noticed most

T: Pretty straight forward. Caramel, floral notes, perhaps some biscuit

M: Lighter bodied IPA, bordering APA style. Light booze

O: Not a bad beer, easily drinkable but also very average.

Found this brew (can't believe I've never even TRIED this, let alone reviewed) at the new downtown Portland (i.e. Pearl) Whole Foods coffee bar, 'The Mezz'. A bargain/special price of $2/pint makes it irresistable.

A: Glass arrived a bit overly-frosty, hence a bland haziness amidst an amber pour. Plenty of rapid carbonation rising to a 1-finger ivory cream, quite dense. Excellent lace: soapsuds in speckled rings.

S: Ho-hum aroma, even as it nears room temperature. Greeted with a bready/light toast sweetness - a grain-forward IPA. Ends flowery and just a little soapy.

T: Fine, yet nothing really overly remarkable. A loaded biscuit-y pale malt, with good caramel (pralines, maybe?) and a juicy orange/citrus backing, a brekfast scone or dessert pastry. Lacks something from the typically hop-centric NW IPA, but I'm perfectly OK with that; the balance better matches my palate.

M: Little thin, a cool/mild feel. I suppose that equals 'creamy' for me, but others might deem it 'weak', even 'boring'. Whatever, I'm satisfied...

D: For all its qualities that scrape past 'average', I liked this brew. Alot: extremely easy to drink, neither cloying or sticky, good balance. Honestly seems closer to an APA (maybe English IPA?) compared to the bracingly hoppy IPAs 'round these parts, but I don't mind. Certainly worth a try or worth having again (depending on your own preferences).

Had this on tap at Mt. Hood Brewing in June 2009. The colour was a dark golden with no head. The aroma was basically light hops and not much else. The palate had a nice initial hop bite but not a whole lot else going on. The finish seemed rather alcohol like.

On tap at Oregon Brewer's dinner.

A - Poured a clear copper with a 2 fingered white head, which dissipated moderately fast and left really nice lacing.

S/T - Malty-honey and flowers.

M - Light bodied, malt dominated, slick, and sweet.

D - This was more average for an IPA. The color is a bit dark, malts dominate the hops, and the feel is kinda thin.

Picked up a growler at the brewery over the weekend. Pours a bright orange hue with golden highlights, topped by a thin white head that dissipates almost immediately. Aroma of caramel malt and bitter floral hops, along with a hint of roastiness. Palate is mellow caramel malt up front, with a nice balance emerging with the fruity hop profile mid-palate. A light biscuit character and a touch of peaty smoke provide an interesting twist. Body is lightly carbonated, with enough heft to carry the flavor quite well. While not a hop bomb like many other Northwest-style IPAs, this is a well-built, perfectly quaffable ale.

The Ice Axe poured a clear orangish color with a finger foam head and some decent lacing.

The aroma was somewhat subdued even as the brew warmed. There was a slight citrus pine aroma but faint for my liking. The taste had a decent malty backing with a semi bitter finish. In the mouth it left some good bitterness sensation. Overall not a bad brew but definitely middle of the road in the IPA world.
