I'm guessing that Elk Head's secondary alehouse opened sometime around spring 2009. A year later I finally gave myself an excuse to visit the ocean and checked out their small Tap Room in the seaside resort town of Ocean Shores. The first thing anyone should know about the Tap Room is that it's not visible from its listed address on Point Brown Ave. You have to access it from a backstreet called Minard Avenue. Look for a candy store and a Mexican restaurant called Las Maracas. The Tap Room shares the same parking lot as these businesses and can be seen across from a miniature golf course.

Everything about the Tap Room is minimalist. It's not just small, it's spartan. There's a tiny bar and a few bar-like tables against the walls. And that's it. There aren't any real sitdown tables. Next to the bar are two snacks counters. One is stocked with hot snacks like peanuts (and free pretzels). The other offers artisan cheeses and smoked meats from a producer near Elk Head's brewery in Buckley. Though a small commercial kitchen sits in plain site of the bar, it's not clear that the Tap Room serves any prepared foods. What they do sell are lots of T-shirts and hoodies and the like. For a small brewery with a small alehouse in a small town, they sure have a lot of clothing for sale.

The bar features modern seating and six Elk Head beers pouring from a driftwood tap fixture. There's also one exquisite chair crafted from driftwood that's almost more art than furniture. (It's nicer to look at than sit in.) No guest taps, cask, wine, booze, or bargames other than a few tabletop puzzles.

Unfortunately, beer quality is just as miserable at the Tap House as it is back in Buckley, though that doesn't stop a steady stream of locals and tourists alike from tanking up on growlers. The best part about a visit to the Elk Head Tap House is leaving the place and going for that long walk by the ocean, which is just three blocks away.

The Elk Head taproom is a little gem in Ocean Shores. About a half dozen Elk Head taps provide the beer, while Nellie's kitchen turns out first rate NW fusion cuisine in a cozy little bar. Fresh, hot nuts are the favored bar snack, and pair nicely with outstanding Elk Head brews (the IPA, stout, and "Blast Zone" chili ale were real stand-outs). On a pair of consecutive visits (Saturday and Sunday), the bar was filled with friendly locals, chatting with the extremely friendly and loquacious staff. The Elk Head really is a community living room with outstanding beer and food.
