Coming in a 330ml slim brown bottle, bottle-conditioned; BB 01/03/14, served lightly chilled in a long-stemmed wine glass.

Appearance: pours an extremely dark brown colour with copper hues around the bottom of the bulb when seen against the light; the dark beige head comes thick and tightly frothy, retreating very slowly and leaving tight laces behind, while the carbonation is detected to be healthy and lively.
Smell: savoury-acidity and sweet malty at the same time, with dark candy sugar, Munich malts, overripe pears (skinned), sour-sweet prunes and dates, melted black sugar, licorice candy and sour yeastiness leading the theme; given a very good swirl, perfumy figs, sweet nuttiness, marzipan, Turkish delight and aromatic toasted tea all come to the fore, adding more pleasant estery complexity to the overall aroma, where only a very mild touch of alc. also sustains.
Taste: lightly effervescent and smooth at the same time, the foretaste is lightly acidic berry-fruity against a good dark-malt backbone, underlined by a deepening note of smoked black prunes, powdered licorice, and toasted nutty malts, then leading towards a lightly chewy, herbally-bitter, and yeasty finish where malts seem to be rather subdued in front of the fruit esters, apart from the lingering toasted nutty aroma going deep down the palate. Surprisingly, the flavour profile is not as colourful/complex as the aroma suggests, but overall shows an integrated whole that is clearly dominated by the estery elements.
Mouthfeel & Overall: refreshingly carbonated and not overly fizzy, this is a full-bodied estery dark ale which tastes rather light on the palate without rendering any unwanted slick or sugary mouthfeel. Not one of the most complex examples in this beer style, but this is still a skilfully-crafted beer which I find so easy to appreciate and drink, especially when the alc. content is hidden so… well.

My father in law shared this beer with me, thanks therefore.

A - A dark brown ale on which a beige head floats. The fluid is reasonable clear and therefore a carbonation bubble stream is visible. The head turns to a fluffy lacing.

S - A malty syrup smell.

T - The fluid has a burning twist to it. I guess it is the hops which are responsible for this. The aftertaste is also a bit weird.

M - A medium carbonation and a burning light bitter aftertaste.

O - This is no topper, the complexity is a bummer. Overall there is nothing to go for.

Bottle from ABS Drinks just outside Brussels. Recommended by Weissbierdrinker. Thanks for the suggestion! Shared with a friend at home.

A - Poured with a two finger, creamy beige head. Amber colour with no visible carbonation. Rocky head is left for a long time. Good lacing and great head retention.

S - Yeasty, plums and other dark fruits. Apples and pears are there too. Interesting.

T - Licorice, spice, alot less dark fruit but it's still there. Unfortunately less interesting than the aroma.

M - Good carbonation with a full body and a sweet finish which is good.

O/D - I was hoping for more sweet notes but it's still a good beer. A nice beer to sip on and share but I couldn't do a full one. A good combo of flavours and aromas though and there is no alcohol in the flavour.

Poured into a La Trappe chalice. Has a deep dark brown color. When held to the light I can barely see through it. Has a thick creamy tan head that hangs around for a long time leaving behind solid lacing

Smell is of toffee, caramel, and slightly buttery. I'm also getting some notes of clove and yeast.

Taste is kind of light up front, slightly sweet, maybe raisins, then changes to a spicier clove dark chocolate flavor. A lingering dry bitter chocolate aftertaste. Everything seems to work really well together. Lots of malty flavors mixed in.

Really enjoying this beer. A must drink.
