i love how fresh this beer is, how the hops seem to be bursting out of suspension like a pod of dolphins breaching off the coast. its so vibrant and alive, and i love that about it. what i dont love is the hop profile itself. i mean, its so fresh and new and clean and good, but its such a familiar played out profile i feel like. northwestern hops of the old guard here, i know it, maybe not this green, but i have tasted the base beer here a million times already. i always appreciate when someone reinvents the wheel to make it rounder you know? its already been done, but lets do it again, lets do it really really well, but its still the same wheel. this might be one of the finest wheels yet produced in terms of balance, freshness, mouthfeel, finish, and abv (right where i like my ipa!), but its still a wheel to me. breakside continues to impress me though, they have a huge lineup, and all of them are very good. (922 characters)

22 oz bottle. Pours clear light yellow with a medium frothy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is some bready (slight crystal) malts with sweet tropical fruit and piney hops.

The flavor is sweet tropical fruits with a big resiny bitterness. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery.

Overall, nice tropical fruit, resiny IPA, a bit thin and watery though. (382 characters)

22oz bottle, cool old-time map label background - me likey. Grabbed from the 'Bier Haus' at the Yoke's across the street from my temporary home for the past week.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with a near-teeming tower of puffy, broadly foamy, and bubbly eggshell white head, which leaves some random wispy and sudsy cloud lace around the glass as it slowly and evenly abates.

It smells of dank, yet watery pine resin, cat urine, orange and white grapefruit rind, grainy pale malt, a wee touch of caramel sweetness, and further leafy, floral, and lightly perfumed hops. The taste is more uric acid, less dank and more green-seeming pine tree detritus, crackery pale malt, a still ethereal caramel essence, semi-sweet orange, lime and grapefruit flesh, a small flinty stoniness, and more leafy, floral, and mildly perfumed hop bitters.

The bubbles are nice and peppy in their alternating fizzy and frothy states of being, the body a tad on the light side of medium weight, and generally smooth, even with all those acrid hops milling and mussing about. It finishes on a drying kick, as the hops start to consider overthrowing the feeble malt once and for all.

A decent IPA, the worldly hop esters testament to that, as is the idea to keep the malt bill more or less out of the decision-making process. Easy to drink, if these particular hops appeal to you, I would imagine - for me, it's more of an exploratory, suck-it-up experience. (1,471 characters)

22oz bottle served in pint glass. Beer pours crystal clear and golden in color, with a giant white head. Not very aromatic, maybe a little piney? Hop-forward C hop flavors dominate. Aggressive and citrusy. Sharply carbonated and not much in the way of malt flavor to balance out this highly attenuated hop monster. The result is high in flavor but not so much in drinkability. But based on the outline of Oregon on the label beind the statement "WANDERLUST" I'd guess this is a beer which is proud of it's callous West Coast IPA phenotype. (539 characters)

22oz bomber, split

I dig breakside and they were out of Wanderlust on my only visit to the brewery so I was stoked to see their distribution hit Seattle and have this IPA wash up on our shores. Clear golden body - nice bubbly head. Very light on the eyes, and the palate - grassy, tangerine, bready malts. Nice and light, but underwhelming given my expectations - just prefer a more assertive hop profile I think. (414 characters)
