22oz bottle into tulip.
A: Pours a deep amber color with an oily, thick off-white head that faded into a well retained collar. Sticky rings of lace were left down the glass.
S: I get notes of grapefruit and earthy hops and flowers. There's a musty leafy herbalness as well.
T: Bitter lemon, earthy herbal hops, lemon peel, minty herbs, and a tingly numbing evergreen freshness in the finish. The aftertaste is green and minty, with just a hint of cat urine.
M: medium full body, thick and greasy mouthfeel with chewy carbonation, slight alcohol astringency, solid bitterness.
O: Average. Not my favorite hop profile, but not bad though.

Enjoyed out of a 22 oz brown bomber with no dating to indicate bottling or freshness anywhere on the label or bottle. Poured into the Speigelau IPA-specific glassware.
Appearance - Moderate pour yields a generous one-finger head the color of off white with a slight orangish-yellow tint to it. The consistency is creamy and lush, and while retention is moderate, the foam begins to recede immediately, at a slow pace, leaving a slight sheet of foam on the edge of the glass while the bubbles in the middle of the glass sink away. Beneath the head lies a body the color of brassy orange, with some pinkish and goldenrod highlights where the light passes through and a hazy disposition indicating that it is unfiltered.
Smell - Pleasant blending of tropical and citrus aromas rush out of the glass to take over my olfactory senses. Mango, pineapple, orange zest, and even some light grapefruit pith that develops into a pleasant hint at the fruity-bitter taste to come. The hop aromas are deliciously overpowering here, and while it's hard to detect the malt backbone directly, you can tell it's there by the fact that there is some heft to the aroma.
Taste - The same wonderful fruit components from the aroma come parading through on the tongue, and my prior suspicion of a healthy malt base are confirmed by the fact that this one is far more than hop water. Orange, pineapple, mango, and even some stone fruit (?) are all at play here, but there is some faint breadiness giving this one a fresh-squeezed juice feel to it.
Mouthfeel - As alluded in my taste description, this is a medium-bodied IPA with some juiciness and moderate carbonation. Finish walks that line between sweet and dry, very well balanced.
Overall, this is really a fantastic IPA, especially for the price. Unfortunately, I had to pay a little more to get it shipped to me, since Breakside doesn't come around these parts, but it was well worth it. If it distributed to my area, I could see this one being a regular purchase at such an awesome price point. If you are lucky enough to be in the area and love IPAs, this one is well worth your time. And if you just like IPAs, it's probably worth the shipping to try it.

a fantastic west coast ipa here. so bright, drinkable, and distinct, just the way i like them. cheap too, this bomber was less than 5 bucks! sunset orange color with just the right amount of haze to let me know its unfiltered, and an inch or so of lasting and thick soapy white head. the nose is tantalizing fresh hops, citrusy, with notes of grapefruit rind and sweet orange, and then the attendant bitterness. its got big resinous aromas, but it doesnt have that thick syrupy honey textured thing we sometimes get weighing down the west coast india pales. this one stays light and bright, clean tasting, super fresh, still sappy and dank, but not heavy with it. i almost get some lime in the finish, this is magnificently refreshing with its high carbonation and only medium body. the alcohol is also right on for the style, i could drink several pints of this and be comfortable, its not too high or too low. my first beer from breakside is a absolute winner, cant wait to encounter more of this stuff!
