From BeerAdvocate Magazine #87 (Apr 2014):

Creamy, Caramel, Salty, Moreish

Salt in beer? Yep. This Stout is made in collaboration with Salt & Straw Ice Cream and includes sea salted caramel. Soft caramel and salt water aromas. Super creamy and palate lifting with caramel, coffee, cocoa nibs, and a distinct salty edge that lends a nice bite and increases the beer’s drinkability. Desert in a bottle.

22 ounce bottle

Appearance is black with a thin light brown head, great lacing, retention is great too

Smell is caramel malt, caramel sweet candies, roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and Belgian candi sugar

Taste starts off dry and roasty, fades into a slightly sweet caramel flavor, does not get too cloying once it is fully warmed which is what I expected, good dark roasty malts provide cocoa and coffee characteristic to balance with the added flavors

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, higher carbonation makes it a bit thinner than it would be otherwise, fairly good balance

Overall I expected this to be very sweet being that it is a collaboration with a great ice cream maker, but it was well balanced and a nice surprise, wish there was more of a salt presence but at the same time this is not a gose =0) (815 characters)

22oz bottle, thanks once again to IronDjinn for bringing this brew over on a hot summer afternoon.

This beer pours a clear, dark ruby brown hue, with two fingers of puffy, thinly foamy, and frothy tan head, which leaves a bit of spotty cloud lace around the glass as it quickly abates.

It smells of bready caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, saltwater taffy, an oily nuttiness, burnt coffee, dark sugar, and faint earthy, leafy, and weedy hops. The taste is sweet, lightly toasted caramel malt, a still decent salty toffee character, cafe-au-lait, singed brown sugar, a muddled black fruitiness, and plain leafy, earthy hops.

The carbonation is quite low and hard to detect at times, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and generally smooth, with a genial creaminess arising as things warm. It finishes sweet, the caramel, coffee, and mild saltiness carrying the day.

A decent flavoured stout, the guest essences working well to integrate and still offer up their desired wiles. Worth a try, especially if your palate tends towards the sweet side of things, but maybe just don't try this after having a gose, like we did. (1,131 characters)

Pours a finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is caramel, roasted malt, cocoa and a little coffee.
The taste is milky, caramel, coffee bitter and a general sweetness at the end. Nice.
The texture is thicker with moderate carbonation.
Enjoyable and interesting. (268 characters)

Nothing too out-of-the box - the caramel flavor was nicely detectable within the stout and I thought it had a nice lightness to it. Finished it easily and would be happy to order it again if I saw it on a restaurant menu or in a friend's fridge. (246 characters)

Pours a dark brown to black with a nice head and moderate lacing.

There is a mild smell, that does not engender strong feelings positive or negative.

Taste is a bittersweet chocolate and coffee. The caramel and particularly the salt is prevalent in the finish.

The feel is a smooth with mild carbonation.

Overall a strong option for the stout lover. (358 characters)
