650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Clear amber body. Not much of a head. Thin khaki collar.

Smell - Caramel malt. Vanilla. A little bit of whiskey.

Taste - Caramel malt still the most prominent. Light whiskey. Adds a bit of spice. Oak.

Mouthfeel - A little dry. Oak cuts some body.

Overall - I don't get the point of barrel aging such a weak beer, but it's ok.

Bottle opened on 10.15.13

A - Pours a dark cloudy caramel brown with a small tan head.

S - Molasses, caramel, bourbon.

T - Molasses, dark ripe fruit, bourbon, caramel.

D - Low carbonation with a medium to heavy body.

O - An Adam from the Wood clone, and I am not sure how close it is, but it's a damn good beer.

Appearance- Pours up some head (maybe a finger) which disappears as quick as I can type this. The head appeared to be a light beige with hints of mocha while the body is a purplish brown/maroon which shows a mix of dark amber and garnet when held up to the light. No lacing at all.

Nose- Very interesting and all over the map. I don't generally describe aromas as messy but this could qualify. It reminds me of New Belgium Cocoa Mole. Cocoa is the dominant note with a bit of spice and lots of heat. And this heat is whiskey, rye whiskey. I can already tell this is going to be boozy and this could use some age. Some chocolate, coffee, roasted notes. Raisin and cherry from the bottle. Slight vinosity. Mild notes of bubblegum.

Taste- Slight feints of cocoa, oak, and raisin as I begin to taste this. Cocoa begins to mount as the sweetness of raisin swells around it. Caramel and vanilla start to charge in but are then bullied by a huge amount of oak and whiskey. Some notes of tobacco and smoke. This is really more whiskey than I want from a barrel aged beer. This definitely could use some aging but it's too messy at this point for me to splurge for another bottle. As you may have noticed, this beer does not hide its heat but revels in it. A tiny bit thin but lots of presence. Fairly integrated for the mess that it's creating on my palate. Does begin to mellow and the heat starts to fade and unfortunately, becomes a little more boring. The biggest obstacle for me is the lingering oak which could be counteracted, but is not, by more rye spice. Hints of red grape. Definitely above average beer that I can't define as solid because of its inconsistencies but is still a good beer. Reminds me a little bit of Tart of Darkness as well, without the sour characteristics.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied but this seems thin for this type of beer. Good carbonation that may be too ample. However, it does seem to mix well with the spice of the whiskey barrel finish.

Drinkability- What a difficult category to grade. I like rye whiskey and like the hot notes of this beer but probably not this much. 13 bucks is a little too much for such an inchoate beer.

Overall- An enjoyable mess. Some beers have imperfections but somehow you can ignore them because of their positives. I like what this beer is trying to do even if I do not entirely like what it ends up being. Breakside is young and it shows, but so does great promise. I will have to try their high alcohol, more experimental beers on tap instead of shelling out the ridiculous price for bombers. There are 34 beers on BA when they are on pace to have brewed 100 beers by the end of the year. That's a lot a beer to add.

But to regain focus, I think you should try this. Some will love this, some will instantly hate it. However, you can't deny its complexity. Ben Edmunds will get better at these types of beers, I'm sure. It should be fun to watch his growth.

bought a bomber

thin head, that disappears pretty quick

amber/dark reddish color

smells sweet and rich. bourbon-y for sure

mouthfeel was a little thin. but that was actually nice for this beer

really enjoyed it. not as much of a sipper as I thought it would be. very drinkable actually, but not nearly as thick or intimidating as the Hair of the Dog beers it intended to honor. Breakside makes some very good beer, and I really liked this offereing. nowhere near the complexity of hair of the dog beers and you can tell this was a new effort for them. I would not pay $12-$13 again for it, but this is a really good beer that is damn near sessionable at 10.5%.

well done
