A gluten-free beer “made with sorghum, brown rice extract, molasses, tapioca maltodextrin, caramel color, hops, yeast.” A portion of the proceeds benefits “non-profit organizations promoting alternative energy education.” It pours a rich, bright amber with an off-white head. Toasty, soapy and vegetal notes in the nose. Creamy mouthfeel. Tart bite up front with notes of crab apples and skins, along with some acidic hop bitterness. Oily stick. Lots of tannic activity that sticks to the palate and steals the show. Misplaced background sweetness akin to fermented molasses. The finish is bone-dry, very husky and unpleasant. While the effort here is admirable on multiple levels, overall, this is a tough one to consume and a beer that could use a lot of cleaning up.

Small light brown head leaves almost no lacing on a clear copper colored beer.

Big roasted almost burnt caramel malt nose.

Taste like roasted almost burnt caramel malts.

Dry roasted aftertaste on a medium body.

Very strong taste but not quite a good one, if this had been toned down some it might have had a chance.

12oz bottle, just called "New Planet Pale Ale" 'round here. Not 'round back, where they apparently keep the sorghum.

This beer pours a clear, medium bronzed amber hue, with two fat fingers of thinly puffy, and weakly foamy ecru head, which surprisingly settles to one of the densest whipped-cream swirls that I have ever seen on such a beer, which wafts off, though, at an accelerated rate, leaving some small patches of fuzzy lace around the glass.

It smells of sharp, heat-less alcohol, flat caramel esters, a musty medicinal essence, a bit of unassailed citrus, and an astringent, grassy, woodiness. The taste is sour, cardboard-infused cider, a rather overt lye-like soapiness, some blotted-out citrus notes, some underripe apple, oh, fuck it - there's nothing malty or hoppy about this so-called 'ale'.

The carbonation is rather obfuscated, and barely noticeable, the body medium-light in weight, and smooth in the vein of Joseph Stalin or Justin Bieber. It finishes off-dry, the over-the-top musty sweetness seeming sort of proud of its persistence, amongst thankfully little else at this point.

Gah. This is the sort of offering that gives GF beers such a bad name. No beer qualities whatsoever, just a whole lot of stale cider, and weird soapy notes. Hardly something worthy of moving off of cider or wine for, if you are an actual celiac, I'm afraid. Avoid.

pours a moderate amber with a thin lacing of head. The nose is earthy and hoppy but moderately so. There is very light caramel ad crystal malt in the forefront with an earthy, citrusy hop finish. There is a lemony aspect to the flavor as well. The mouthfeel is light and highly carbonated.

This smelled better than it tasted. It's so oddly hoppy that it's unbalanced. This is an odd brew all around. I didn't enjoy it.

P- Als of Hampden

A- clear amber color with a one and half finger head. A decent lacing on the mug as well.

S-molasses and caramel malts. aslight vinegar smell as well.

F-a tart molasses flavor with wate/vinegar maltiness.

M- a sour aftertaste that lingers and doesnt get better in the mouth. Light bodied.

O- No no no, will not have another one of these. It was nice to give it a whirl but i got spit out by the vortex.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a clear coppery amber with an effervescent one finger white head that dissipated immediately to small patches and loose bubbles. Aroma of grassy hops and faint bready malt, slightly medicinal. Flavor is hard to describe; molasses and sweet/sour vegetables (presumably the sorghum) with moderate estery medicinal elements. Light bodied with slight carbonation. Well, I now suspect that without barley malt, beer would have never been invented or stuck around so long. Very interesting flavor, but ultimately too medicinal to be satisfying. Another good reason to be glad I'm not gluten intolerant; this is a one and done.

New Planet Gluten Free Pale Ale has a fairly thick, off-white head, some thin lacing left behind on the glass, and a clear, caramel appearance, with lots of bubbles streaming up from the bottom of this etched tasting glass. Aroma is weird and medicinal- sweet, strange, and like a health food store. Taste is odd as well- the same medicinal health food taste, with the molasses, sweetness, and a decent hop bite at the end. Mouthfeel is pretty watery, and New Planet Pale Ale finishes not too dry, mediciny, and bitter. Well, for what it is, I’ll rate it at the low end of good. It’s okay to me, but I can see how it would really gag other drinkers.

A: The beer is clear amber orange in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that quickly died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of sorghum are present in the nose.
T: Much like the smell, the taste is a little tangy and has lots of flavors of sorghum, which seem to resemble rancid cider. No bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels light-bodied (but not watery) on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has strong aromas and flavors of sorghum, but seemed a little one-dimensional and something that would take getting used to before it might be considered to be enjoyable.

A-Pours clear, fizzy amber with no head, just lots of tiny bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass. Seems undercarbonated, but we'll see.

S-Like no pale ale I've ever smelled. More similar to iced tea, or watery, flat cola. The adjunct rice aroma, though subtle, finds its way through.

T/M-Very strange. Tastes like tannic, overly strong iced tea. The bitterness is unpleasantly dry, and I would not have immediately associated it with hops had I not known this was a pale ale. Almost no carbonation. Gets less palatable with each sip. Terrible metallic taste on the back end, like gargling pennies.

O-Stay away. Drain pour.

I had purchased this a while back, thinking that perhaps an article on gluten-free beers might be in the offing. When I could not find a taker, the beers got shunted to the side. I had a colleague who has issues with gluten and she was always curious about beers that were gluten-free. I usually eschew them since I am not gluten-intolerant and prefer to leave them for people who are. In the interim, I am purging my massive backlog of bottles this summer and lo and behold! this one popped up. They will now be part of The Great Bottle Purge of the Summer of 2014.

From the bottle: "Ale made from sorghum and brown rice extract"; "Portion of profits go to alternative energy efforts."

I am being driven nuts by these gluten-free beers! I realize that I am not their intended audience since I do not have Celiac, but they just make me feel like drinking a beer after I drink one. I popped the cap and got a gusher for my troubles. Once i got the cap completely free, I gave it a good aggro pour and produced two soapy, bubbly fingers of light-tan head with very limited retention. What an irritating mess! Color was a tea-like deep amber/light copper to copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was really odd on this one. It had a slightly burnt sour sugariness to give it a molasses-like odor. Mouthfeel was lighter and thinner than ever! This bordered on ethereal. The taste was sharp, slightly bitter, more in line with an APA, but not quite achieving it. I have to say, other than the 3R Raspberry, this was probably the best of the lot thus far. Finish was semi-dry, which was also a change, as though some residual sweetness had remained from the brewing process. A very curious beer in a very curious style.

Pours a clean orange-ish with an off white head. In the aroma, dry hops and a note of clove. In the taste, dry pine hops, small clove, a bit sticky sweet. A small bite and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry pine hop in the aftertaste. Nice hop presence, still a bit sticky but the best gluten free I have had.

Poured into a snifter.

Pours a beautiful clear amber body under a scrappy head that laces some but doesn't form compact foam.

Smells of light hops and something like dark sweet rice.

Hops and the non-barley grains make a duo for the duration of the flavor, which in my opinion is pretty good. There is a bitterness and twang to the flavor that I believe comes from the sorghum, and is kept under wraps enough to not intrude too far. The flavors are simple and do not display much (if any) depth, but they are alright in their own way.

The mouthfeel is sharp due to higher carbonation and the sorghum twang. Maybe the rice extract adds to this, but I don't know.

Conclusion: I have not had a gluten free beer in quite some time, but this strikes me as being much better than what I remember. Not amazing, but interesting and good in its own right.

Little head that leaves some spotty (and small) lace. Attractive broth, amber color and crystal clear.

Perfume smell. The grain (lightly sweet) and hop are in the background. It's not unappealing, but it isn't what I was expecting.

Thin body is the first impression. I think the gluten free grains aren't bad. They are pretty dry and the peppery hop bite shows up in the swallow. Overall, this is okay for a gluten free beer, but I'd prefer the real thing.

A: The beer pours a transparent amber color with almost no head.

S: Grass and citrus peel are pretty much the only evidence of hops in this beer. Very bland and watery, but there is a bit of rice and some wet cardboard/paper aroma, too.

T: Quite watery with a bit of rice and a bad vegetarian hot dog flavor. A bit of cardboard and wet paper with some mild grass and citrus peel. A mild bitterness to it on the finish.

M: Very light in body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: Nothing about this beer was enjoyable.

Pours a clear, amber color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of strong grain (sorghum), slight hops, and a hint of citrus. Fits the style of an American Pale Ale ... barely. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong sorghum (grain), hint of hops, and a hint of citrus. Of the three New Planet's I've had, (3R, Tread Lightly, and this one), this is by far the worst. Almost a drain pour, it is solely sorghum with a very stringent after-tastes.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a bright amber color and a clear texture. There was a half inch of foamy, somewhat long-lasting head. Average lacing.

S: Not a lot of aroma here, with some malt and grain peeking through.

T: Tasted of mild hops, a soapy quality, malt, and a not very nice grainy finish. This is an off-balanced flavor that is simply not very well constructed.

M: A decent amount of carbonation with the aforementioned, unpleasantly grainy finish. Light-bodied.

O: I haven't had that much luck with organic beers, though I still hold out hope. This beer did nothing to change that attitude. Simply put, this is not a very drinkable beer.

Poured into tall pilsner glass, color is a transparent copper, head is white 1/4" thick, then dissipates with some light lacing.

Smell is harsh, astringent(?), not much grain presence, maybe some hop bitterness.

Taste is not too thin, as expected, flavors are mixed and muted, some sweetness but mostly astringent/nail polish type flavors, some hop grassiness noted.

Mouthfeel is sharper upfront, but the flavors meld as it warms, but there is a lingering harshness from the estery flavors.

Overall - it tastes like a gluten free beer - not much to enjoy here, for those that are not seeking out the gluten free realm

Amber color in the glass, touch of brown. Some head at first but carbonation virtually disappears. Aroma is floral, reminds me of buckwheat. A grainy kind of flavor but not the usual malt. No trace of sweetness. Very thin body.

I find this undrinkable after a few gulps. So bitter, so thin, so harsh. Maybe there should be a category for non-traditional malts. It would be good to encourage experimentation with different grains but at least they should have some acceptable taste.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: rich orange hue with a haze-free body and a light effervescence. Head is a thin layer of frothy tan foam. Color is nice, head rather unimpressive.

Smell: very light, sweet malty aroma with a touch of sourness and a tiny hint of hops. Not bad, but there's really not much there at all.

Taste: sweetish flavor with a bit of that sourness I usually associate with sorghum beers. There's a hint of a plastic quality there, too, which I don't love but isn't so bad as to be a deal-breaker. Hops are citrusy and generally not terribly prominent.

Mouthfeel: minimal body with a light carbonation. Not especially pleasing.

Overall: on its merits as a pale ale, not that great; on its merits as a gluten-free beer made with sorghum and rice, it's really not bad at all. I certainly prefer it to some of the other options out there.

Bottle pour at the BevMo Holiday Beerfest held at Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear dark orange with a foamy bone colored head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of grain, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer but it's the best of the 3 New Planet beers in my opinion.

Pours a deep honey color, with a light, fleeting head. The foam is soda-like, fizzing up quickly and dying out just as fast.
A nice hop aroma underpinned with honey sweetness. The malt is a little strange, but the hops are right on target for a good pale ale.
The flavor opens with honey sweetness, moving cleanly and swiftly into earthy, piney hop bitterness. Lighter bodied, with moderate, peppy carbonation. I'm guessing it's the sorghum that adds this unique grain/vegetal flavor sweetness in the aftertaste. Definitely a bit of burnt molasses and nutty sweetness. I'm not a big fan of quinoa, and this tastes similar, but it's ok in beer form. Clean, with little off-flavor aside from a mild, vegetal strangeness that's probably just the gluten-free grains. Well balanced, but retains a lingering hop aftertaste, as well as a hint of molasses. Easily the hoppiest, most craft-beer-like gluten-free brew I've tried. I'm sure my wife would be head-over-heels for an hoppy, gluten-free IPA. It taste like barley-grain beer until you get to the aftertaste. If they'd do a heavier trippel or big IPA, most of the off flavors would be masked and celiac folks would rejoice.
My wife has been gluten-free for a few months now, which has really put a damper on her beer selection. In my opinion, this is one of the best, easiest to find, selections in the local market. Very highly recommended for those sensitive to grains. I could drink this happily if I were gluten-free. Had I not had a real beer in months (or years), this would hit the spot for sure. Even not being intolerant to gluten, I'm happy with a glass of this. There are far,far worse pale ales out there, without being encumbered with a gluten free recipe.
We met the guy in charge of this brand at GABF 2011, and I would like to reiterate that my wife would love to see an IPA. Please. Ditch the raspberry and go full-on with the hops, please. IPA is what everyone likes.
As far as gluten free beers, this is the best in my opinion.

A- Pours out a medium orange or amber like color, semi thick, no carbonation nor foam.

S- Has a very mild hoppy smell to it, little amount of citrus.

T- Has more of a bold taste than I thought it would. Has a decent hoppy flavor to it get little citrus in the mid palette but leaves your mouth with a lingering sour taste. Not a fan of that.

M- Ok drinkability, semi thick, bold, and sour finish.

Overall- Out of the three different onces, if I had to choose this would be my favor. Def more flavor than the others. Cheers

A-Pours copper and clear. Head is well presented. It dies off a bunch, but in its wake is plenty of lacing. Not bad.

S-Corny, but there is a nice mixture of sweetness and floral hoppiness behind the corn too. Actually I am impressed. Its not awesome, but its far from an abomination.

T-Taste isn't quite as good. Its still better than expected, but there is an off-putting vegan note that lingers and lingers. There is some nice sweetness along with a bit of grassy hops. It has its highs and lows.

M-Fuller bodied for a 5%er. Bitterness is mild but it hangs around for a while. Lightly vibrating carbonation.

O/D-This was pretty decent. I have had worse non Gluten free Pale Ales. An actual beer. Well done.

The beer pours a beautiful clear amber mahogany colour with a thin white head that fades to just a ring around the glass and leaves a little bit of lacing. Not much, but more than some.

It has an aroma of light caramel and citrus, but mostly hops. Actually, it's the aroma that carries this beer, it is really pleasant, but then...

But then you take a taste. Geeze, something is not working here. Soap, soap and more soap with a soapy slimy mouthfeel and a witch hazel finish. I'm not exaggerating. The sip starts of tart and astringent like a lemon peel and carries all the way through. There is a base of malty sweet and maybe apple, but...it's fairly disgusting. Truth be told, I can't drink this beer. I get absolutely no hop flavor at all.

Mouthfeel is light and slimy and totally reminds me of witch hazel or kerosene. Carbonation is moderate to lively.

I gotta pour this one out. Sorry New Planet. I don't mean to disrespect but you have to work on this one.
