A 12 oz bottle from the Brass Rail.
A: The stout is black, dark, noirish even. It poured with a viscosity reserved for beer and maybe motor oil, or somewhere in between. A tan head, no more than a mere band, leaves little head behind.
S: Chocolate and bourbon, equal parts sweet and lush. The rye adds a spicy booze eat but the mildness indicates a blending. The balance is quite nice, the chocolate and roasted aspects playing off of the vanilla and rye. Cocoa powder even shows up.
T: The first few sips don't bring much bourbon, more of the imperial stout. It is black, charred with the chocolate and burnt toast leaving a scathing darkness across my palate. The rye whiskey gradually makes its way through, emerging with vanilla and wood. The rye adds both strength and hot sweetness, becoming more apparent with each sip. The vanilla softens the malt roastedness but that charred presence lingers nicely, a full finish. The barrel aging, as well, comes through nicely - not the full on flavor that I'd like but good enough to be get the job done.
M: The rye adds an interesting finish, a little spicy caraway amongst the roasted wasteland. Before that, the stout is bold and the barrel soft. A good beer.

Pours a dark brown color with ruby edges. The thin layer of beige head quickly dissipates into oblivion. The nose has roasted notes but it is quite difficult to detect the rye whiskey. This offering is full bodied and the flavor profile has both roasted notes and the much anticipated rye whiskey essence. The whiskey presence is soft and merges nicely with the roasted bitterness on the finish.
This is well done and enjoyable, but it does not hold up to the very best barrel-aged stouts out there. Then again, I did not have to wait in line and deal with a one or two bottle limit to purchase this beer. So, there’s that…
