Dark, black as night. Usual color that I'd expect for a Stout. Had a very small head it to it.

Smell:

The beer had strange smell to it. I could get the hint of Rye, but there was something else I couldn't quite place. After some smelling of the beer, I finally placed the smell. The smell reminded me of the smell of the noodles that come in the "A little taste of Thai" Microwavable/Stove Top Quick Meals. There is a certain oil that 'A little taste of Thai' stores their noodles in, in which the smell of this beer reminds me of. Kind of a weird smell to have for a beer.

Taste:

This beer, in small sips, has a taste of rye and a hint of chocolate. However, in bigger drinks, the beer hits the pallet harshly. The taste starts off with a very intensely sweet, sugary taste and then finishes off with a bitter, beer taste.

There have been a few beers that I have had, including this one, that have been intensely sweet. It makes me think that they are tying to mask the high alcohol content with a sweetness, but just add way entirely too much sugar. I believe this beer, if it had a lesser sweetness to it, would have been a better.

Mouthfeel:

I found this beer to be Medium bodied. It was not heavy like some stouts that I have had. It was harsh due to the abrupt sweetness of the beer.

Deep black, dark as a calm Arizona night. The pour glimmers a hint of red and brown when the light hits just right. Starts with a respectful dirty-white head that lasts through most of the session while turning darker and darker. The lace is sparse but present.

Strong alcohol scent, with a dark roasted undertone. The scent reminds be of dark chocolate dipped raspberries, with a slight caramel linger.

In small sips, you get an amazing roasted flavor, a nod to smoked Stouts. A larger mouthful will tell you what's really going on with this beer: the insane level of sweetness. Its overwhelmingly sweet, followed by a strong alcohol aftertaste. It's as if the brewers were attempting to hide the 11% alcohol with sugar.

FULL PINT : Rye Rebellion
ABV: 11.00%
STYLE: American Imperial Stout

LOOK: Dark brown bordering black. Off white lacing.

SMELL: Roasted malt and vanilla aromas are quite nice to the nose.

TASTE: Smokey flavors, some dark fruit, spicy rye. Alcohol flavor is well integrated but not overstated. Woodsy notes of whiskey and oak, to go along with earthy hops. Mild peppery rye and intense roasted malts with some chocolate and coffee flavor. Certainly has a good deal of bitterness.

FEEL: Medium bodied. Well carbonated.

OVERALL: Perhaps my favorite beer made by Pittsburgh's Full Pint Brewing. It's good beer. Drink it.

I had this on tap at Holy Hound in York, served in a tulip

The color is black, no light passes through, very viscous looking with a head the comes and goes but revives when swirled with fine bead. lace is basically legs on the glass. The smell is very good with some nice cocoa and slight fruit esters which are current-like with mild toast, biscuit and light coffee with some mild spice. The feel is very good, full feeling without an abundance of sweetness, there is a nice balance of malt roasted texture and light yeast with subtle alcohol and mild bitterness.

The flavor is excellent with a malt body that is not overly bitter or burnt but has a mild chocolate malt character with slight creaminess of yeast adding to the taste with some mild toasted and coffee-like flavors which never really come off as overly roasted with slight spice and hint of caramel. Overall I really enjoyed this, the alcohol was mild and the complexity was there with a great sense of balance It did not have the impact of other 11% beers I have had recently a very smooth and drinkable Imperial Stout

On tap at the Pine for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week! Served in a 12 oz snifter.

A- Body is a menacing dark brown, nearly black. Served with a 1-2 finger creamy tan head. Some lacing is left behind in the glass. Held up to the light side by side with Big Eddy this brew was much darker and richer in color.

S- Balance. Great Balance. Dark Chocolate, Roasted Malt, Oak Barrel, Whiskey, rye, malt everywhere.

T- Flavor is very similar to the nose. The base beer is moslty present upfront with that signature rye backbone. A lot of barrel comes through for the finish-but it balances well with the base beer and does not overwhelm it. There is a big alcohol warmth at end and a moderate, balance flavor-but none of the associated astringency.

M- Exceptional. Low to medium carbonation and a thick, deep, very smooth, complex body.

O- Overall this is a fantastic stout. I love hoppy rye beers because they add such a smoothness to the mouthfeel but I didn't realize what a difference it would make in a stout. Fantastic job by Full Pint in putting this one together. I bought a four pack and I hope its just as good bottled.

Poured a blackish body with one-finger tan head that died quick on top of a malty aroma; mix of roasted (touch of coffee) malts and some sweet caramel and chocolate but very little rye. Hard to pinpoint "the rye" is; it's like a strong stout that gives off a dry, bready, woody feel with roasted and coffee malts and is balanced with some caramel and chocolate (hint of vanilla). Medium-bodied, chewey, smooth, finishes real dry and not sure how much rye is lending itself to dryness and how much of this is ABV, although the high ABV is contained. A really good if not complex stout.

A - Pours out of the tap with a thick black body...the head stood one finger tall and was brown in color...it receded to a thin ring but still left decent lacing

S - The aroma changes and opens as it gets warmer...chocolate and coffee, roasted malts, woodiness, charcoal, hint of whiskey/alcohol

T - Just as the nose, the flavors open as the beer gets warmer...there is a big roasted flavor that is present throughout the beer...nothing really challenges it at any point...the only sweet flavors coming through are a hint of vanilla and some dark fruits...chocolate and coffee are present throughout, with the coffee providing some bitterness...I don't necessarily pick up the rye flavor, but there is a nice barrel/whiskey/woody characteristic that is lingering...the alcohol presence is kept to a minimum

M - Full bodied...low carbonation, smooth, and big

O - This was a very nice surprise...I didn't hate this, but I also didn't find it amazing...it's great for the balance of flavors...I'm glad it wasn't overly sweet or boozy...the barrel notes were just right and it had a cast of supporting flavors...nicely done

On-Tap into Pint Glass

Appeared a deep, dark black with two fingers of dense, tan head. Smelled of chocolate, coffee and malt. The smells come through immediately in the taste with a very slight bitter finish. The use of rye in this beer is evident as the heavy flavor and body of a typical stout are thinned out nicely. Overall, an excellent rye stout that is well-balanced and very easy to drink. Will certainly have it again.

On tap at the brewery. Poured into a Full Pint pint glass. Served pretty damn cold. Aged in Jack Daniels barrels.

A. Extremely dark,black body with a half inch mocha colored head. A tiny bit of spotty lacing stuck on the glass.

S. This was served cold so it muted the smell a good amount.I get a bit of roasted notes with chocolate. Faint whiskey comes through in the end.

T. At first I get good chocolate and roasted notes,maybe some cocoa. The beauty comes as this warms up! I will say that this is not a whiskey bomb but very well balenced. The whiskey and barrel characters come through nicely. A ton of vanilla, with a small amount of oak,it doesn't hide the base beer but lets it come through with chocolate and roast and rye.

M. Very good chewy full body. Heavy feel. Low carbonation. clean finish.

Overall I was very suprised and pleased of this beer. Get it while you can,because they are only going to bottle this once again till January. Must try!

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

Served in a snifter, a dark black liquid, opaque, with a nice compact cap of brownish head. Aroma of dark roasty malts and cocoa beans. Taste was very nice, dark malts, moderately roasty, not too sweet, cocoa, pumpernickel, a hint of ash, and a drying whiskey quality. Mouthfeel was pretty smooth, heavy-medium body, and the alcohol was pretty well hidden. A very nice drink overall.

Appearance: Pitch black, no visible light coming through the beer. Thin tan head that disappears almost immediately

Aroma: Whiskey aromas are dominant. Faint hints of chocolate, maybe some roasted malts. Some noticeable alcohol is present in the nose too.

Taste: this beer starts with whiskey and a gritty rye flavor that competes with chocolate and alcohol for full attention of the palate. The former pair narrowly edges the latter, though it’s a fairly tight contest that suggests a very well balanced beer. As the drink warms, some sweet touches of caramel are faintly detectable.

Mouthfeel: The gritty rye flavors are mitigated by the chocolate malts. A stinging mouthfeel from whiskey and rye is rapidly laid to rest by smooth chocolate and roasty flavors, but makes a brief appearance on the back of the palate. The lingering flavor is light alcohol and chocolate.

Overall, this is a pretty good beer. I’d prefer either: 1) some more full-bodied whiskey flavor; or 2) more malts and less whiskey. The beer seems to be caught in between the two areas, though it’s not necessarily a bad thing. I certainly appreciate this beer for what it’s worth.

2014 vintage. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours black with a small tan head that fades and leaves decent lacing and nice retention. The aromas are full of dough along with dark chocolate. Some cocoa malts. Hints of coconut. The bourbon is present. The flavors are on the sweeter side, but there's still a solid bitterness. Lots of oak/wood notes in the flavors. Very earthy. Some black pepper. The rye is there, giving it a subtle spiciness. More chocolate. Some vanilla and caramel is in the mix. Pretty roasty. There's a slight warmth and the alcohol is noticeable, but not in a boozy way. Finishes dry. Mouthfeel feels thin, but it's on the lighter side of full-bodied with active carbonation. This makes a solid sipper.

This is an okay barrel-aged stout, but it's not something that really grabbed my attention. It's a little rough around the edges. It isn't bad, but isn't something that can hang with the big boys, in my opinion.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter

Pours jet black with one finger of dark brown head that fizzles to a thin collar with light lacing. Bright herbal hops are the first aroma I notice. Lots of fresh-ground coffee, cocoa, vanilla, and whiskey as well.

Taste was pretty much as expected. Bittersweet dark chocolate with a hint of dark roast coffee. Smokey vanilla and caramel. Then a fair amount of warming whiskey on the finish. Not overwhelming by any means, but there's no mistaking what this is. The body is a little heavier than medium, but not much. Lightly carbonated and very smooth. Somewhat thick and creamy, coats the mouth well. If this was just a bit heavier and fuller it would be near perfection for me.

Overall I liked it quite a bit. I wouldn't call it "boozy" but it's probably close. It's a sipper for sure, and a darn good one I'd say. I love whiskey and when I'm in the mood for a big strong stout I will definitely look for this one again.

12 oz. bottle split with a good friend. Have enjoyed this each time I've drank it, and want to support the local beer. Here goes the review.

A- Fairly aggressive pour into a Voodoo snifter yields a thin, light-brown head. Barely any light getting through. Viscous as can be. Spotty lacing with some nice legs (like my girlfriend).

S- Soft bourbon and rye. Lots of chocolate and an enjoyable roasty aroma that balances this out. Faint presence from the alcohol, though it is not offensively boozy.

T- Charred flavors. Roast with some faint alcohol. A little more bourbon presence on the flavor than there was on the aroma. Faint spiciness from the rye. There's also a bitterness that hangs around throughout the whole drinking process. Really interesting flavors here. Not mind-blowing, but they're still nice.

M- A tad oily for my preference. However, this beer is really smooth. Low carbonation with a medium mouthfeel. Quite enjoyable, though far from perfect.

O- A nice offering from a local brewery. I remember enjoying this beer more with some age on it. There are three still left from the four-pack I purchased yesterday. Probably gonna lay these down for awhile and see how they develop. Will probably return for a re-review.

Appearance- Black, dark as night.

Smell- Malt front, soy, and whiskey.

Taste- some oak, vanilla, and a bit boozey. Nice chocolate notes. Not as sweet as some barrel ages. It is a rye whiskey barrel and you can tell

Mouthfeel- thick, almost milky. Not syrupy like some barrel aged.

Overall- A solid beer, a bit thick for me. Would have liked some more oak and whiskey flavors. Worth a try and a nice price for a barrel aged beer. At 11% it packs a punch. I didn't find this to drinkable because of the thickness.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, 2013 vintage bottle. Pours dense pitch black color with a small tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of green apple, pear, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, vanilla, toast, toffee, oak, clove, whiskey, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Ok aromas with solid complexity; yeast off notes are quite strong, but don’t completely mask the whole aroma. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, light char, rye, vanilla, toast, toffee, oak, whiskey, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, rye, light char, vanilla, toast, toffee, oak, whiskey, herbal, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity of dark/roasted malt and whiskey barrel flavors; with a great malt/barrel flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy and moderately slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good barrel aged imperial stout. Even though the aromas were flawed, the taste was very nice with good complexity and balance of malt and barrel flavors. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Interesting brew that really had a subtle green apple taste. The ABV was noticeable which was a slight let down. The stout portion of the beer was good but dont expect a massive rye/whiskey bomb. The barrel aging is there but I would not throw this into the upper echelon of BB stouts. The mouthfeel was awesome! if only the beer was better. As the beer warms it becomes much more drinkable and enjoyable. I suggest letting it breath a bit.

Bottom Line: interesting brew.

this beer had great potential. Upon pouring I could smell green apples which is a flaw in beer from over stressed yeast. This sucks. I had great expectations for this beer. It has potential. So the term is acetaldehyde. You can google it. It means the beer is too young not had time to condition. Another words the yeast did not finish cleaning the beer up and eat all of the by products of itself. usually meaning the yeast was strained or someother haps. anyway. I would really like to try some more of their beers

12 oz bottle, 2013 vintage

pours oil black, just a few bubbles of dark tan head that fades. great aroma, the whiskey is prominent, but its soft and nice but not harsh. nice roasty espresso flavors, with oak and vanilla whiskey flavors. no booze heat. medium to full slick body, low carbonation. smooth feel.

overall a real nice barrel aged stout, and not over priced.

Served from a 12oz bottle into a HF stemmed tulip.

Appearance- Black with real quick mocha head. No lacing. Carbonation seems absent.

Smell- Malt forward imperial stout. Light cherry and chocolate, vanilla bourbon hints, a lil coffee. Not too much going on, but smells nice.

Taste- That oak with a light bourbon comes through first. Decent hop bitterness which is unexpected. Super light notes of the above aromas. Maybe I'll get more as it warms up. Don't know how long it was aged in barrels for, but its not very strong. Lacking in flavor a bit.

Mouthfeel- Super light carbonation, no booze heat (nice for 11%), medium viscosity. Drinks pretty smooth.

Overall- A decent bourbon barrel stout. Nothing impressive, but maybe a nice intro to the style? The bitterness lingers for a while.

Bottle from a great trader. Pours a dark black with a verrry small brown head, very creamy looking. Rich aroma of chocolate and spice, a bit of roast, sweet brown sugar, and light barrel notes of whiskey and anise. Flavor is a big chocolate balanced with a beautiful whiskey sweetness from the barrel, a good bit of caramel flavor, and a roasty bitter finish. Very little heat here and nicely balanced spicy rye chocolate. Definite influence from the rye whiskey. Beautifully creamy on the palate with lowish carbonation. Like velvet. What a great beer. Seems very underrated to me. This is damn good.

Appearance: Straight up slick black, super black. Creamy smooth pour with minimal carbonation. Head is small and dark khaki. Drops to a small creamy collar with no head thanks to the barrel aging.

Smell: Holy hell. Whiskey is aggressive and everywhere. I cracked the cap and it hit like a straight bottle of rye whiskey. Sweet, very sweet, but not cloying. Vanilla, some wood, and a ton of caramel and toffee sweetness. Cocoa, bitter chocolate, and licorice. It's all there. Deeply roasted with some burnt edges. Chewy fudge, almost candy-like. Some dark fruit, mainly berries. Alcohol is high and hits the nose harder as it warms. Malt sweetness tries to mask it, but ultimately can't hold up.

Taste: Solid roasted malt with a bitter cocoa. Some smoother dark chocolate and a hint of licorice. Small hints of dark fruit. Some old coffee. A lot more chocolate than the nose indicated. Bourbon drops to a tiny backing note, offering some vanilla and toffee, but not much else. Very vague sort of rye in the back that I probably wouldn't have picked out without the hint on the bottle. Mellow. Very slight smoke, char, and burnt malt. Caramelized with some some toffee. A bit harsh on the finish. Almost nutty and grassy at times. Slight lingering roasty bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Smooth with a medium body. Light carbonation. Slightly oily. A bit thin for the style.

Overall: Unsettled grumbling.

Where's my rye? Smells like a whiskey bomb for a minute and then drops to a rather average imperial stout.

12oz. bottle: This one pours an inky, opaque dark brown color. There was just a wisp of a tan head on it. Very little lacing. The nose is quite nice. Definitely has the aroma of rye whiskey, but not overly done. Chocolate malts and some roasted ones also in the nose. The taste os quite good. A bit of the rye flavor, but the alcohol is hidden. Chocolate, slight roasted malts and a subdued sweetness to it. A very fine beer!
