Picked up a bottle at the brewery in August. Poured into a pint glass. Small, fast fading off-white head with minimal lacing. Dense black/dark brown color with some ruby highlights coming through when held to a light. Aroma features roasted malt with some chocolate and coffee aromas. Fairly strong and very pleasant nose. Taste is more of the same. The malt is king here with just enough hops to keep the sweetness in tow. Roasted malt and chocolate up front, with the coffee flavoring in the background. A little sweet as well. Mouthfeel is crisp, light and very smooth. Really drinkable, a classic session beer. I like Nantahala beers and this one is a winner.

Strong nose, like most nantahala brews it is light and drinkable flavor wise.

Nice chocolate notes in the smell and taste but seems to be a little light for a porter. Nice little roasted malts. Mineral smell and taste. Hops complement the sweeter and chocolate notes. Pretty good.

On tap in Asheville.

Clear; very dark brown; small but durable head.

Aroma: average strength for style; light smoke plus peat plus dark roasted malts.

Flavor: more hops than the nose suggested, and perhaps a touch less smoky. Nice aftertaste.

Feel: a bit too thin; relatively dry.

On tap @ Revolution Pizza & Ale House (Charlotte, NC) on 3/11/12. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a deep clear ruby, with a thin covering of off-white foamy head. This retains with some modest ringing and a frothy cascade of lacing which slowly drips down the sides of the glass. The aroma smells of coffee and maybe some lighter roasted nuttiness, with a touch of green citrus and sweeter notes of caramel and cocoa powder.

The taste is toffee and cocoa up front, with a gentle green bitterness pulling up the middle, while coffee flavor spreads out into the backend and finishes this roasty with a touch of leftover green hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and prickly feeling on the tongue and with then more of a firm crispness that fills out the corners of the mouth. Despite the lively feel of the carbonation, this is overall coming off as a bit thin in the mouth.

While I appreciate the sub 5% ABV for drinkability purposes, the low alcohol here ultimately also leaves this feeling a bit too light, with a presence in the mouth that is more akin to a Brown Ale at times. A bit more fullness to the body and flavors and this would really be in business. As it is, it was unfortunately a bit forgettable.
