American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.80% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Made with classic Pacific Northwest Cascade, Centennial, Mt. Hood in the boil and dry hopped with more Cascade hops. Cascade aroma dominates the nose, so be sure to sniff it like a wine snob. Plenty of ultra premium Maris Otter malt and three specialty malts give the beer a nice smooth sailing biscuit like aroma and body, some sweetness, well balanced against 5.8% alcohol by volume.

22 oz bomber purchased form Epic Brewing in SLC, poured into a goblet.

Appearance: Light hazy wonderful light golden. Slightly off-white head settles slowly to leave some patching with not much lace.

Aroma: Pine needle and herbal hops with some citrus mingled into the light malty notes.

Taste/ Mouthfeel: Not as hoppy as the nose. Light sweetness with the alcohol balanced nicely. For a pale Ale, this one has a good amount of body. The texture is slightly thick with nice average carbonation. The finish is sweet and somewhat long. The bitterness of the hops diminish before the sweetness.

Overall: I am so glad that this brewery is nearby. One of my favorite beers from Epic!

A - Even a pretty gentle pours yields five(!) fingers of dense off-white head on top of a clear light copper liquid. Head leaves quite a bit of lacing and persists for some time.

S - Aroma is grassy and citrus hops, and is quite floral with a nice toasted malt presence.

T - Taste is more malt forward, with toasted bread malt. Hops come in midway, with grassy, herbal and citrus tastes all coming through. Finish is quite herbal and has a decent spicy and bitter kick.

M - Medium mouthfeel is a touch resinous. Seems a bit heavy for a pale ale. Bitter on the finish.

O - Decent beer, but not what I would look for in a pale ale, and doesn't come close to competing with the many nice IPAs available, so it is kind of in a no man's land.

Given to me by a student in town from Salt Lake City.

Pours a pleasant but unassuming orange/brown with 2 fingers of nice white head.

the smell is again pleasant but unassuming, some definite herbal/piney hops with a strong malt presence that seems more "english" style. Plenty of biscuit flavors colored with some caramel sweetness.

The taste is more of the same, definitely more malt forward than most pale ales on the marked but not in an overpowering way. Decent bitterness that suits the overall flavor nicely

The mouthfeel got a touch syrupy for me as it warmed up near the end of the bottle so I docked it slightly.

Overall this is a solid beer. Not one that I will seek out but I will definitely enjoy it if it is offered.

A - murky orange with a huge, soft, foamy, pure white head that has great retention

S - bready with a faint citrus undertone

T - dark bread, some spicy hops, almost peppery, bitter finish, a bit of alcohol, some faint citrus throughout

M - a bit thin but medium bodied, well carbonated

This is a strange beer. It's complex but a bit unbalanced like the pieces don't fit right. The malt comes across as strange and is itself almost a bit spicy and then the hops are spicy and citrusy. And then under all that the tin body reveals the alcohol. If this were cleaner I would be a bit more excited about it. As it stands, I won't be getting this beer again.

Cap't Compton is a beer that I like...versus the rest of the field. My friend from Park City is supplying this morsel. The beer poured a clear copper with thick white head that is leaving a lace. The scent has mostly bitter hops with hint of orange peel. The taste carries mostly bitter hops that dominate. There is a slight citrus zeal and enough malt to make the beer drinkable. The mouthfeel is light to medium in body with good carbonation. Overall this is a solid beer....not spectacular....but certainly sessionable

22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance-Golden orange in color with good clarity. Moderate beige head with decent retention.

Aroma-Fragrant hops open with notes of pine, juicy fruit, light citrus, and some definite cattiness. Malt is soft and mellow, with sourdough and light caramel notes. Simple, yet quite pleasant.

Flavor-Opens with bready malt and a dab of caramel, which is quickly followed by piney, herbal, earthy and almost woodsy hop flavor. Hop bitterness grows to slightly above moderate in the finish, and the hop flavor continues to evolve on the palate. Aftertaste is dominated by a green, herbal earthy hop note with soft hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel-Medium body with soft, moderately high carbonation which yields a light, effervescent tingle on the tongue.

Quite a good APA, I could drink this in volume. Good thing it comes in bombers, because I wasn't ready to be done with it after one glass.

A: Dense oxidized orange color is filled with an aggressive carbonation factor. The head is large, frumpy with a beige sheen to it displaying a dominant presence in the vessel and good staying power. Excellent glass coverage.

S: Light toasted bread crust, soft flowery citrus. Not a lot of hop umph here for a dry hopped pale.

T: The flavor is flowery citrus, backed by a generous amount of toasted grain support. Grassy citrus cascade hops provide a decent amount of hop strength and west coast appeal while the hood hops provides a spicy touch of fruitiness of tropical-orange hints.

M: crisp and bright, well suited per style with a medium show of malt support but thins a bit on the hold turning a bit washy.

O: really liked how the spicy fruity hop bite of the hood hops played with the citrusy cascade mending well together. Good toasted malt support, decent drinkability.

#5 of my flight of Epic Ales.... Thanks Sammy.

Nice creamy looking off white head... great retention.. big sheets of lace drape with every sip... The brew is slightly hazy orange.

Nose is mild for most Western APA's... but it is certainly within style .... pithy citrus hops... probably Cascade... pale malts shine with touches of toast.

Flavor mirrors the nose with a good pale malt backbone... plenty of hops throughout... pretty standard pale ale... not going to blow your socks off, but this is a pretty good beer... good body and carbonation.

Would I buy this? Sure, assuming it isn't too expensive.

Thanks again buddy.

Poured into a pint glass.

3.5 A: Moderately hazed medium orange color. Three fingers of beige frothy head. Retention is good and moderate amounts of lacing are left.

3.0 S: Bready malts. Earthy and herbal hops with notes of cat piss.

2.0 T: Lots of yeasty breadiness. Not a lot of other flavor aside from a light neutral maltiness. Herbal hoppiness. Light bitterness. Nothing can get through the yeastiness and thus this needs to be cleaner. As it is, it sucks.

3.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy, but also too chewy.

2.0 D: Not a fan of this. I'm finding out that pale ales need to be filtered for me to enjoy them.

Clear amber colored beer nearing the color red. Small white colored head doesn't stick around.

Smells fairly hoppy for a pale ale with a strong cedar wood scent. Malt syrup and pine but also fair grapefruit aroma. Some sandal wood and tea scents, but not strongly.

Starts out dryish with a woody after taste. Good solid hop bite.Flavors of cedar plank and pine with strong tea. Bitterness is in the top 15% for the style, stronger than a lot of AIPAs.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall just an OK pale ale.

Hazy appearance, could be chill haze. Beefy, fluffy cloud like off white head. Large and small bubbles. Biscuity aromatics with subtle sweetness. Slightly herbal and tea like flavors. Very clean and light on the palate. Earthy, not bitter or sweet. Light carbonation with a crisp consistency. Light to medium bodied. Not dry but not a lingering finish either. Overall, not bad. I wouldn't seek this out again but for something easy drinking this works.
