Spiral Jetty India Pale Ale is the launching point in our series of hoppy IPA brews. Spiral Jetty IPA has an aggressive hop profile (five different hops used here with two in the dry hop) presenting citrus, floral, resinous or pine aromas and flavors typical of American hops and a nice pleasant, cleansing bitterness on the finish. The dominance of the hops helps to balance the complex malt flavors and the higher alcohol content.

Appearance is beautiful. A nice, solid off-white head on a golden-red body.

Nose is sour and almost Belgian. Not a fan.

Flavor is clean and crisp, but the hop contribution is a bit muddled. Is it rich and piney? Fruity and citrusy. Just a sharp bite? None of these. I found it generally tasty, but hard to isolate and describe the flavors.

Mouthfeel is moderately stripping and tart. Slight acidity, even.

Overall, (if you ignore the sour nose), it's good. I like it well enough, but it is not singular enough for me to want to seek out more.

I have to drink my anger away after watching a disgusting display of officiating in Iowa City today.Poured into an imperial pint glass a hazed peach color with a nice tight 1/2 finger clingy white head.Aromas of tangerines and light grapefruit intmingled with caramel/biscuit malt, not overly assertive but decent.A little light in the mouth and not overly assertive hops makes again for a decent beer but not great by any means.Fruity hop flavors and not overly bitter.

Spiral Jetty pours a hazy, cloudy (even slightly chunky) pale orange with a dense and foamy head that leaves lingering lacing all down the glass.
The aroma is nice, I get lots of citrus and a hint of pine and dank spice.
The taste is better than I was expecting. Lots of citrus and tropical fruit up front with a bit of lemon in the middle and some sweetness as well. It finishes with a refreshing and dry bite.
The mouthfeel is medium, with lots of bubbles and a bit of stickiness.
Overall, i think this is an underrated beer. Not a hop bomb by any means but very tasty and refreshing. I'd buy it again, especially at this price (4.99 for a bomber).

A decent IPA with a good flavor, but not too hoppy. Slight citrus aroma and aftertaste makes for an easy to drink beer. Wish that there was a little more hoppiness and a little less citrus flavor.

From what thier literature says, all of their beers are only available in 22oz bottles. Would love to try one of their yet-to-be-released Exponential Series beers!

Good looking copper colored beer, 3/4" white head on the top. Really white, whiter than normal for an ipa. Aroma, eh, for boasting about a five hop variety, its kind of hard to tell this was dry hopped with anything, much less five different kinds. It wasn't offputting, it frankly just smelled like a normal Cascade hopped pale ale from back in the 90s.

Taste, again, hops aren't really all that special in this beer. Good caramel presence, hop bitterness is all I can really detect going on in a good way. I didn't get any fruit, be it tropical or citrus flavors from the hops. No bottle dating, so maybe that may have been the problem, but maybe they should bottle date? I dunno. In my experience, this undated bottle was pretty much middle ground to average. I've had some people talk up Epic's stuff, but I really haven't been super impressed, in fact, given the price of some of their stuff (not this one), I have actually been disappointed at times.

This label says to discover the three levels of Epic Brewing: Classic, Elevated, and Exponential. This beer around 5.50 a bomber at least according to Ohio pricing seems fair for an IPA. Pours a clouded orange hue with a bright white head forming thick and leaving behind some even lacing. Aroma has a strong citrus pith accent with white cranberry/apricot jelly notes. Spicy hops, fruitiness, and citrus are the three components I'm smelling during the initial whiff stage. As I dive into my first sip of this "Epic" Spiral Jetty IPA, more citrus rind bitterness, a hint of yeast spiciness, leading to a dry finish. More biscuit malts with hints of citrus pith, turning into a decent IPA. Mouthfeel drying finish with biscuit malt profile even keeled carbonation nice finishing medium bodied drinking IPA. Solid IPA not earth shattering West Coast I must kill for this beer but good flavors and interesting enough to keep my drinking.

22oz bottle served in a Sam Adams lager glass.

Pours a hazy golden-amber color with a large, foamy, white head. The head has good retention and leaves plenty of sticky lacing.

Plenty of hops in the aroma. They are most obviously fruity, including grapefruit and lime, but the aroma is more complex and includes floral, herbal and spicy notes. The taste does not parallel the nose in that the flavor is more purely citrusy, especially orange, and not nearly as bitter as one expects given the nose or the IPA classification. This is fine with me, and I enjoyed having a mildly bitter, orange-tinted aftertaste rather than the usual bitter grapefruit effect. There is some bready malt flavor present, but there must be a good bit of light malt in here to counter or mask so much of the bitterness.

M: medium carbonation is closer to being too high than too low; Medium-light body has a trace of watery feel. Crisp with a little sharpness.

O: a very drinkable, rather mild (for style), and markedly orangish IPA. Recommended.

I was very impressed with a few beers recently from these guys. I bought this at Total wine and poured at 40 degrees.. This beer has a straw color with a slight head that disappears very quickly. The aroma is quite lacking it smells to me of dank heavy first wort hoping, and light on the dry hoping. The taste to me is of bitter dank Chinook with little of a flavor profile. It does leave good lacing so it states to me this is a 90% 2 row and 5% carapils and 5% crystal 10/20! I find some esters that leave this beer off balance, and the heavy bittering hop addition overpowers the layered flavoring hop additions! To me it does get legs as it gets in the 50 degree range, but it still needs some specialty grains to give it a full flavor profile. Right now it is just a dank IPA with limited flavor!

Poured from an inch or so above the glass gives this beer a big off white head that just sort of sits there before slowly receding somewhat.

The IPA is a clear classic honey colored.

Citrus slightly more than floral or piney hops aroma but it seems all are present.

A light citrus hops taste on this medium bodied beer.

A light dry aftertaste with some hints of the citrus hops lingering.

This beer is nearly amber in color and nearly, but not quite, clear, though very bright. Held up to the light, it shines a bit of a brighter deep gold. A just off-white head rises to nearly two fingers high. Retention is fair, and it leaves a sturdy foam that drops some patchy lacing down the glass.
The aroma offers a nice hops backbone with ample malt support. Hops are primarily piny and resinous with a distinctly minty note underneath. There's a bit of lemon zest/rind throughout, and malt notes are primarily dry and crackery. Hops bitterness is also quite herbal and leafy.
Nothing really surprises in the flavor that wasn't detectable in the aroma. This is a well hopped IPA with ample malts support for good balance. It seems like it would be fairly dry but really isn't. More rind bitterness/zest really comes out in the finish.
The mouthfeel is quite crisp in a medium body, pretty consistent activity creating active carbonation but avoiding over-carbonation. It verges on semi dry, but a bit more dryness pulls into the finish.

slow to rise head that stays shallow, perhaps a finger, but lingers for the duration of the drink.

Beautiful opaque orange in the glass.

Smell is understated, slight hop smell, just a bit of citrus.

Taste is crisp like it might be sweet but no, the hops pulls through, and the colder the pour the more citrus that one notices. Slight pepper notes.

Finishes well, lingers long. Some yeasty/bread taste to compliment the hops but the spice seems to develop even better after swallowing.

One of my favorites from Epic.

Bomber from NJ. pours unfiltered light grapefruit colour, slight off-white head, and lacey. Neutral aroma. average mouthfeel. Appropriate mouthfeel. Not initially drinkable, but over a long warm Fall night (yes it gets warm here sometimes) the light grapefruit, moderately hoppy beer, went down nicely. Kind of middling for the style though.

A - bright orange with a thin, short lived white head

S - piny; incredibly faint nose

T - bready, citrusy, piny

M - well carbonated, thin, light to medium bodied, dry

When I first opened this beer, it was incredibly dry. There was a ton of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. The dryness practically stripped the flavor clean of my palate. Once the beer settled, it came across as less dry, but as it turned out there wasn't much flavor to hide. The flavor was simple and refreshing, but ultimately incredibly underwhelming. This was a rather forgettable IPA, one that I won't be buying again.

I'm liking the Spiral Jetty....this beer probably would have been better had I not tried the Holulent prior. Nevertheless....in Park City, Utah with my homie trying some local flare. The Spiral Jetty poured a hazy with froathy white head that is leaving some lace. The scent is fresh hops that carry slight pine, citrus and some floral tones. The taste is very very good balanced beer with bitterness throughout but enough malt to keep it from being too much. The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall another excellent offering from Epic....nice job guys...and gals.

A - mostly clear bubbly golden, two tall fingers of head retained amazingly well leaving some random lacing spots
S - grainy and slightly bready, very mild leafy greens, but the aromas are very subdued which often doesn't bode well....
T - solid peppery hops with a touch of leafiness, grainy malts, and a bit of a mint bubble gum thing on the finish
M - light body and lightly creamy, very mild bitterness
O - its not a bad brew at all, just a little on the mild side all around, would be a nice beginner IPA for the not so beer advocate, but still nice to try another from this brewer that is not available in my area

Pours a cloudy pale orange. Decent head and nice spotty lacing. Aroma is very much citrus with orange being the dominant smell. Also, some light hints of piney hops. Taste is a mouthful of citrus, orange, mango, lemon and such. Hop bitterness sneaks through pretty good and brings a small helping of pine and resiny hops. Mouthfeel is cool, refreshing and allows the hops to come out a little more as it is being drunk. Crisp, nice carbonation and easily drinkable. Price is also quite good for this beer as I paid $4.49 for a bomber, wow!!

Golden color with some chill haze. Two fingers of head forms and then settling to a thick cap. Light lacing is left behind.

Faint hop aromas of citrus and herbs. Bready malts as well.

Malt flavor is dominant with a rather subdued citrus/herbal hop flavor. Nothing wrong but the brewer did not set the bar very high.

Solid body and nicely carbonated.

Lacks the hop presence to be a good American IPA. If they labeled this an APA it would get a solid score. Priced the same as Arrogant Bastard. Guess which beer I will grab next time?

Pours a semi hazy bright orange with a thick bright white head. Lots of grapefruit and piney hops on the nose. Almost full body up front that thins a little on the finish, kind of like bubble soda finish.

Highly carbonated. Breaks apart the flavors a bit. Nice bitter finish. Mostly grapefruit hop wise with some pine and floral notes. Pretty basic besides the highly carbonated body which breaks the beer apart unfortunately. Could make great for a sessionable flavorful beer if it weren't for the bomber format :/

Oh well

(22oz bomber from Total Wine Desert Ridge). Pours a hazy golden color with 2 finger chunky white head. Carbonation is moderate though. Some nice lacing also is developing as the head dissipates. Aroma has some tart peach, rock candy, mango, and green apple. Quite nice. Taste is semi-sweet malt followed by some bitterness. Thin bodied with a dry, bitter finish. The hops dont overwhelm you and blast your palate. I gotta say, this is one really good IPA. I’ll definitely get more of this one.

A: Beautiful bright tangerine orange is capped off by a egg shell white frothy head that is resilient in stay. Tiny jet streams of micro-bubbles compose a slow and steady conga line of carbonation bubbles slowly snaking their way to the surface. The lacing is kept to a minimal with small speckled remains dotted across the glass on the coverage.

S: A bit underwhelming in both strength and complexity for aroma. Fresh oranges manages to squeeze out along with some light hints of grapefruit juice intermingling among some fresh wet greenery.

T: Strong hopping flavor-wise of dry flowery citrus, pine and dry grapefruit. Grassy tones come on the close out. Toasty orange peels, with a bit of spiciness, mandarin orange, and lemons come with a toasty bread malting that was hard to appreciate from the high level of hoppines.

M: Strong, perhaps its best point is full bodied with a good presence of tingling carbonation. Dry grapefruit pulp is left behind.

O: Overall a mouth puckering and dry hop experience, that will give the tongue a workout. High level of hoppiness is blunt, however seems to overshadow the smaller aspects of the drink and doesn’t leave much in the way of complexity instead of a powerful punch of citrus to the taste buds. Typical flavor, strong hopping, though doesn’t necessarily make for an interesting flavor that will keep me drinking only for shock value sake. Great if you’re a knockout ipa type of guy, a bit more less if your looking for some complexity among your hops and balance drinkability wise.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy dark gold color with about an inch frothy off-white head. The head stays around a long time, and there's also a good amount of lacing left behind on the glass. The brew smells mostly like pine and citrusy hops (grapefruit, lemon peel), along with some caramel and bready malt. I think the taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but I think the hoppy and malty flavors are well balanced overall. There's also a lingering bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's a bit slick and is well carbonated. It's also smooth and easy to drink, I think it's a solid brew. This IPA isn't going to blow you away with hops, but I liked it. Not bad for $4.99 a bomber.

Cloudy amber with an average white head with minor lacing.
Smell is over ripe oranges.
Taste is a big blast of pine resin bitterness with a light amount of dehydrated pineapple.
Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation and a very dry bitter finish.
Overall for hopheads that love bitterness above all else.
Also lots of nasty looking stuff in the bottom and sides of the bottle after the pour..

Poured a hazy pale amber, with a thin head but good lacing.

The smell is light, citrus and pine.

It is perhaps not typical of the style, but a good beer.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Pale gold/lemon body, boy that's a first for me for an IPA, this looks more like a Belgian pale ale or tripel. Body is cloudy and dull. A good simple off white head, bubbles seem to be a little un-uniform slow descending falling head, and some spotty lacing. Some good retention but head never stays bigger than a finger. That body color just throws me too, I've never seen an American IPA that light before.

Bouquet is non existent. There's maybe a faint sense of malt grain but that's it, not even a hop presence. Not really feeling this at all. There is really nothing going on here and for an IPA I have to score that below average. If I can't even smell a STRONG hop then what exactly are you doing seriously?

Does taste improve? This is a weird one, I'll give it some unique quality points but man I don't like it. Strange mushy and weak bodied fruit that I can't pinpoint. No hop presence as predicted from the nose in the mid palate. Afterwards then comes out in the swallow some hop but feels stuck and sort of lifeless. Can't even detect profile, pine no, fruit citrus angle no, sweetness no... just.. not even bitter.. nothing stands out it's as if this beer isn't even trying.

Overall this is just a weird one and I am not getting this angle at all. Luckily there are so many other better IPAs out there.. so many... this is not one of them.

22 picked up at Brewforia a few days ago... poured into my Old Guardian Goblet... 1" tight white head... nice lacing.. the brew is very hazy deep golden..

nose shows a fair amount of citrus with more than expected pale maltiness... pretty fruity..

The malt seems too much really... or maybe this could be an older bottle?? Descent bitter hop bit up front moves into a sorta muddy citrus/pale malt mash-up mid palate... body also seems too thick.. but the carbonation is about right.

Mehh... good... not great...
