Spiral Jetty India Pale Ale is the launching point in our series of hoppy IPA brews. Spiral Jetty IPA has an aggressive hop profile (five different hops used here with two in the dry hop) presenting citrus, floral, resinous or pine aromas and flavors typical of American hops and a nice pleasant, cleansing bitterness on the finish. The dominance of the hops helps to balance the complex malt flavors and the higher alcohol content.

Poured an orangey gold with a thick creamy white head. The head lasts around the glass circumference and leaves some sticky lacing. The aroma is pretty bland, a nondescript whiff of hops and maybe a hint of sweetness. Unfortunately, that's more than the taste offers. I don't get any of the hops nor do I get any complex malt flavors. If it weren't for the actual alcohol feelings, I'd wonder if this was really a beer. I've usually liked-loved Epic's beers but this one completely misses. Unless you're trying to collect the set, I don't see a reason to try it.

Pours a perfectly color for an american IPA. Nice amount of frothy head out of a 22 ounce bottle.

Smell is also nice. Citrus, grassy notes and a little cherry as well. Was excited for the first taste.

But wasn't excited after it. Too much malt, not nearly enough hops for an IPA. Getting some wood, bark notes with a little orange on the finish.

If you're not a hop lover, this might be an IPA you'll enjoy. Otherwise, I'd avoid.

22oz bottle
Served in a conical pint glass

A - It is amber with a haze to it. It is topped with a couple inches of cream colored head.

S - I get slight hints of citrus with some caramel malt.

T - I can't tell if the hops have faded in this beer or they were never there. I get mild hops up front with a malty middle and a bitter finish. The reviews haven't been glowing so it is hard to determine.

M - Moderate to thin. A bit thin for this style in my opinion.

O - It started out with some promise. But that promise faded. It was cheap so I can't bitch about the price.

Poured into a Port pint glass. Straw colored, cloudy or unfiltered look. Trillions of tiny carbonation bubbles lead to a very small one finger head. Head is bright white and soapy in appearance. Lace doesn't look like it's going to stick very much.

Smell is earthy and yeasty. There is a bit of bright citrus hop profile.

Taste is much like the nose. Very musty and kind of soggy bread like. There is just a hint of sweet citrus, like the taste of a sugar topped pink grapefruit. A little to much on the earthy side for me.

Mouth is crisp and carbonation is round or spritzy. Body is delicate and the finish is average and dry.

Overall I must say that I wasn't at all impressed with this. It was way to weighted to the malt side and it's choice of hop and yeast was too musty for me. Thanks to Gwen for the sample.

A - Pours a clear, bright gold color with very generous amounts of carbonation. The head stays pretty constant across the top.

S - Somewhat weak with faint citrus notes, faint caramel malt, there's not much going on in the nose here. Smells a little earthy.

T - Taste up front is herbally and earthy and the caramel malt blend is somewhat grainy in texture. At the very end of the sip there's a grapefruit bitterness that lends itself to a dry and slightly alcohol effervescent finish.

M - Thin, medium body, gentle carbonation on the tongue.

O - I'd be interested in knowing how fresh the bottle is and then revisit my review. It would be a nice touch if the fruit bitterness were more forward, it's there, but quite buried in the herbal taste.

Good looking copper colored beer, 3/4" white head on the top. Really white, whiter than normal for an ipa. Aroma, eh, for boasting about a five hop variety, its kind of hard to tell this was dry hopped with anything, much less five different kinds. It wasn't offputting, it frankly just smelled like a normal Cascade hopped pale ale from back in the 90s.

Taste, again, hops aren't really all that special in this beer. Good caramel presence, hop bitterness is all I can really detect going on in a good way. I didn't get any fruit, be it tropical or citrus flavors from the hops. No bottle dating, so maybe that may have been the problem, but maybe they should bottle date? I dunno. In my experience, this undated bottle was pretty much middle ground to average. I've had some people talk up Epic's stuff, but I really haven't been super impressed, in fact, given the price of some of their stuff (not this one), I have actually been disappointed at times.

Poured bottle into pint glass

A - very clear, able to see through beer with no problems.

S - Citrus smell, with lemon and possibly some coriander.

T - Fresh, smooth taste with a citrus taste immediately and a bit of hops following. Could have used more hops and/or more additions to pack more flavor.

M - Smooth and the flavor lingers, not too heavy or light.

O - Good IPA. Nice balance of hops, but would have liked a bit more flavor one way or another - more hops or more non-hoppy additions.

Golden color with some chill haze. Two fingers of head forms and then settling to a thick cap. Light lacing is left behind.

Faint hop aromas of citrus and herbs. Bready malts as well.

Malt flavor is dominant with a rather subdued citrus/herbal hop flavor. Nothing wrong but the brewer did not set the bar very high.

Solid body and nicely carbonated.

Lacks the hop presence to be a good American IPA. If they labeled this an APA it would get a solid score. Priced the same as Arrogant Bastard. Guess which beer I will grab next time?

22 oz bottle. $3.99 at Grape and Gourmet in Va Beach. Not a bad IPA...good for the price.

Pours a hazy apricot color with a big white head (on a hard pour). Average retention and spotty lacing.

Smell is mild citrus hops. Nothing pronounced.

Taste is ok. Not a lot of flavor....just big, unbalanced hop bitterness without the flavor of the hops. Less harsh as you drink, but certainly not a top IPA.

Mouthfeel is average richness and starts with a dry harshness that softens as you drink. I had the whole bottle myself.

A bit better than average....can't beat the price!!!

A - Pours hazy golden with slight amber overtone. two finger creamy head that hangs around for a good long while.

S - Good hoppy pine scent, slight yeasty bread and citrus notes.

T - For an IPA this one is maltier than most. Good biter hop flavor with the sweetness of malt.

M - Full-bodied mouth with just a hint of stickiness.

O - Overall, not a great brew but not bad either. Nothing surprising or special, just a decent, drinkable ale. Wouldn't go out of my way to find it, but wouldn't turn it down either. Price point was sensible at $4.99 for a bomber

On tap in a pint glass at Bodega on 7/26/11

Hazy, golden orange color. The pour yielded no head, save for a few wisps; thanks for that, by the way. It stands to reason there was no retention or lace.

Juicy hop aromas: grapefruit, tangerine, peach and mango. Pine, too. Smells oily with a touch of sweetness. Smells clean and fresh. A diminutive malt presence hangs in back.

Tastes alright, albeit maltier than the aroma suggests. Think biscuit and granular bread notes. The hops do well in spite of the malts, though. Said hops don't seem as expressive but there is a sharp pine bitterness and zesty citrus. Bitterness is heavier upfront, clearing out for the finish. The beer is quite dry, too.

The feel is thin and watery, especially on the first few sips. Carbonation is vigorous and boisterously overpowers the body. The feel becomes slicker as it warms with some resin on the finish.

A few tweaks would make Spiral Jetty appeal more to my IPA preferences but it's leaning comfortable in the right direction as is. Worth a try, at least while fresh on tap.

Had a decent 8-10oz pour from a bomber my buddy got, served in a pint glass.

A: Amber color with small white fluffy head, not much lacing, just bits here and there.

S: Smells nice and hoppy, mostly citrusy and bittering hops on the nose.

T: The taste is citrusy and piney hops that never really seems to develop or finish. It's a one dimensional flavor that tapers off with no malt backbone either.

M: Quite drinkable, but nothing great about it. Finishes a little dry and has a bit of a lingering earthy/dirt flavor.

O: All in all I wasn't very impressed with this beer, it starts out good, but fails to keep me interested. Definitely won't be seeking this beer out again.

Appearance is beautiful. A nice, solid off-white head on a golden-red body.

Nose is sour and almost Belgian. Not a fan.

Flavor is clean and crisp, but the hop contribution is a bit muddled. Is it rich and piney? Fruity and citrusy. Just a sharp bite? None of these. I found it generally tasty, but hard to isolate and describe the flavors.

Mouthfeel is moderately stripping and tart. Slight acidity, even.

Overall, (if you ignore the sour nose), it's good. I like it well enough, but it is not singular enough for me to want to seek out more.

Bought a 22oz bottle of this as something different. I noticed that this is part of their classic line of beers (others were elevated and exponential lines). My guess is that means pretty tame, unoffensive.

Pours an apricot color with a slight haze. The head is very white and fluffy. Nice head. The aroma is malty with a slight graininess. Modest amount of hop aroma - slight citrus and grass.

Flavor is bisquity with a slight sweetness. Slight bitterness but less that what most American IPAs have these days. I definitely wouldn't call this a west coast IPA. Overall, not bad but not what a hophead is looking for. Maybe this is an entry level Amer. IPA?

Overall, I think my initial thought was correct. This is on the lowest of thresholds to be called an American IPA. It's not a bad beer but the goal is to be unoffensive. Mission accomplished.

Aroma comes off as a fresh, kinda light floral sort of thing. I also get some orange citrus on the back-end of the aroma profile.

Spiral Jetty looks like a great IPA. It is that classic slightly hazy orange/amber with a crisp white head that is soapy in nature and leaves good lacing.

It's defiantly more bitter than malty, however, it doesn't come off as an IPA as far as bitterness goes. The flavor is nice, a sort of light orange citrus with a backbone of orange-like sweetness too. I like the flavors but it just doesn't meet my expectations of an IPA.

Spiral Jetty finishes dry, is on the moderate-high end of carbonation, and has a nice medium body. It's very drinkable and a fairly nice beer overall.

A decent IPA with a good flavor, but not too hoppy. Slight citrus aroma and aftertaste makes for an easy to drink beer. Wish that there was a little more hoppiness and a little less citrus flavor.

From what thier literature says, all of their beers are only available in 22oz bottles. Would love to try one of their yet-to-be-released Exponential Series beers!

Clear orange colored beer with a small white colored head. This fits the description of "IPA Orange."

Smells hoppy but not excessively so. Strong tea and citrus but not terribly aromatic.

Starts out dry with a toasted grain flavor. Mild malt and woodiness with a mild hop bite. Overall tasty but more pale ale than IPA.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a tasty beer but certainly not a hop bomb West coast IPA. Buy this expecting a pale ale flavor and you will be happy with it.

22oz. Bottle

A: Pale yellow to honey colored appearance, with a thick white head that sticks to the side of the glass.

S: Mild aroma: oranges & grapefruits, floral hops, and malt.

T: Very mild IPA. Slight pine and citrus fruits.

O: Very easy to drink. Would be a good introduction IPA for someone just trying this style.

M: Light and mild

I have to drink my anger away after watching a disgusting display of officiating in Iowa City today.Poured into an imperial pint glass a hazed peach color with a nice tight 1/2 finger clingy white head.Aromas of tangerines and light grapefruit intmingled with caramel/biscuit malt, not overly assertive but decent.A little light in the mouth and not overly assertive hops makes again for a decent beer but not great by any means.Fruity hop flavors and not overly bitter.

A - mostly clear bubbly golden, two tall fingers of head retained amazingly well leaving some random lacing spots
S - grainy and slightly bready, very mild leafy greens, but the aromas are very subdued which often doesn't bode well....
T - solid peppery hops with a touch of leafiness, grainy malts, and a bit of a mint bubble gum thing on the finish
M - light body and lightly creamy, very mild bitterness
O - its not a bad brew at all, just a little on the mild side all around, would be a nice beginner IPA for the not so beer advocate, but still nice to try another from this brewer that is not available in my area

A: The beer is clear pale yellow in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high white head that left a thin film of bubbles covering the surface and a thick ring around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderate aromas of citrus hops in the nose—orange and grapefruit seem to stand out in particular.
T: The taste is similar to the smell with flavors of citrusy hops along with hints of caramel malts. There is a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. No crispness is evident.
O: There is nothing special about this beer but it goes down rather easily.

Picked this one up at the Utah State Liquor Store in St. George, Utah, based on the surprisingly low price (less than 4 bucks for the bomber). Poured a hazy golden color with a nice white head. Aromas of citrus, light malt and pine. On the palate, medium bodied, with flavors of light malt and pine/citrus.

A: Pours a crystal clear pale golden orange in color. The beer has a half finger tall light beige head that reduces to a very thin layer over the entire surface of the beer with some thicker patches and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant lacing is observed.

S: Overall pretty light and nothing special about the aroma. The aroma is dominated by the hops - mostly citrus with a very light hint of floral hops. There is some light amounts of biscuit malts as well.

T: Definitely the flavor is dominated by the hops but there is a decent amount of biscuity malt flavors as well. The hops are not overly bitter but I can definitely detect the presence of mostly citrus hop with some subtle hints of floral hops.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin/watery and no crispness.

O: Very easy to drink and quite refreshing but not one of the best I have had in this style (even from this brewery) - a pretty average beer. Could easily be a session beer.

Clear gold with 1.5 finger frothy white head. Decent retention and thick, sparse lace.

Nose is light flowers and citrus. A little too light for an IPA, but not unpleasant at all.

Taste is dry with flowery hops. Finish is lighter than I'd like and there is a biscuit malt quality that doesn't meld as much as it should with the style. Maybe more English than American? Slightly fruity finish with just too light a hop flavor. Drinakable, yes, but needs more pop.

Feel is light for the style as well. Could use more texture and a bit more creaminess.

Overall, a decent choice but not the best.
