Spiral Jetty India Pale Ale is the launching point in our series of hoppy IPA brews. Spiral Jetty IPA has an aggressive hop profile (five different hops used here with two in the dry hop) presenting citrus, floral, resinous or pine aromas and flavors typical of American hops and a nice pleasant, cleansing bitterness on the finish. The dominance of the hops helps to balance the complex malt flavors and the higher alcohol content.

slow to rise head that stays shallow, perhaps a finger, but lingers for the duration of the drink.

Beautiful opaque orange in the glass.

Smell is understated, slight hop smell, just a bit of citrus.

Taste is crisp like it might be sweet but no, the hops pulls through, and the colder the pour the more citrus that one notices. Slight pepper notes.

Finishes well, lingers long. Some yeasty/bread taste to compliment the hops but the spice seems to develop even better after swallowing.

One of my favorites from Epic.

Pours a huge three finger off-white head that just sits. A very slow retreat, highlighting a pale opaque gold color and deep, sticky, lace. Nose is fresh floral and citrus and little else.

The flavor is more or less all one sided. Sometimes too much balance can be a hindrance but its not something this beer has to worry about. This is a lemon pine hop scorcher with nil on the malt-o-meter. Spicy and salty and tight bubbled throughout with a late splash of alcohol, this is good for what it is but not terribly complex or crafted. More efficient than good but hop heads will enjoy this.

22 oz. bomber,

A: Pours a light amber with a medium white head, solid lacing and head retention.

S: Sweet citrus, orange and pineapple. Fragant hoppy nose.

T: Meyer lemon, with some sweet pine, pineapple and tangerine. Appealing hop flavours, never that bitter.

M: Medium-bodied, soft and frothy, easy drinking.

O: This IPA is not an assualt on the palate, yet the flavours are vibrant and delicious. Well made, great price, it's nice to see a new IPA on the market and have it be sub-$4 a bomber.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Pours a hazy golden amber with an impressive fine-bubbled head that dissipates quickly, leaving little residue.

A mild tropical fruit aroma is more pronounced directly at the mouth of the bottle rather than in the pint glass. Flavour starts with caramelized malt sweetness and melds into a pleasantly bitter hop finish, with mango and other tropical fruit tones. The finish lingers decently and there is little burn or other sign of the high alcohol content (6.6% ABV).

A pleasant beer and one I'd happily drink again, but nothing remarkable.

Appearance: Pours a hazy honey color with an inch of foam; the retention is decent and a smattering of lace is left behind

Smell: The malt is as prominent on the nose as the hops, with a grainy, haylike character; the hops are earthy and piney

Taste: The grainy malt flavors dominate the front end, but once the hops get going they dominate the profile, bringing piney and earthy flavors that end up being rather astringent

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I have tasted a lot of IPAs and it is rare that I come across one where I dislike both the malt and the hop flavors - this one has very little to commend it

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a tulip glass.

Pours a cloudy, light orange color. A solid two finger egg shell head.

A rather citrusy nose. The hop profile doesn't smell too overwhelming, as there are still some pretty noticeably bready aromas as well.

The taste isn't nearly as citrusy as it smelled. It's more piney than anything. Quite bitter. Really hoppy, great for the hop heads but it's a little bit one dimensional.

Pretty full mouthfeel. Highly carbonated, crisp finish.

A decent IPA. This one would probably be a popular one for those who look for nothing but hop bitterness in their IPA.

22oz bottle
Served in a conical pint glass

A - It is amber with a haze to it. It is topped with a couple inches of cream colored head.

S - I get slight hints of citrus with some caramel malt.

T - I can't tell if the hops have faded in this beer or they were never there. I get mild hops up front with a malty middle and a bitter finish. The reviews haven't been glowing so it is hard to determine.

M - Moderate to thin. A bit thin for this style in my opinion.

O - It started out with some promise. But that promise faded. It was cheap so I can't bitch about the price.

Poured into a pint glass.

4.0 A: Lightly hazed, bright deep yellow color. Three fingers of frothy off-white head. Retention is good and plenty of lacing is left.

2.0 S: Dank and somewhat catty. Yeasty breadiness. Not a lot from the hops and almost nothing from the malts.

1.5 T: While the nose was bad for being overly boring, the taste is bad for its contents. Catty, lightly soapy, and notes of plastic. The only other major flavor is yeasty breadiness. Mild bitterness with some herbal flavor.

2.0 M: Lighter body. Too much carbonation. Lacking creaminess, but is chewy from the yeast.

2.0 T: This is a bad beer. Epic has been doing really well, but I see they still have some stinkers to deal with.

22oz. Bottle

A: Pale yellow to honey colored appearance, with a thick white head that sticks to the side of the glass.

S: Mild aroma: oranges & grapefruits, floral hops, and malt.

T: Very mild IPA. Slight pine and citrus fruits.

O: Very easy to drink. Would be a good introduction IPA for someone just trying this style.

M: Light and mild

Thoroughly interesting IPA. More on the mellow side, and a refreshing change from the armament race of the hop warhead brewers. Floral scent with resiny notes and warm pine needles.

Lovely golden amber with a touch of orange in the tall Petrus tulip. Foamy cap lasts well. Fills the mouth with a warm, spicy flavor. Lots of malt but just sweet enough to balance the hops. Taste of crackers with cracked wheat. A little citrus rind and the sweet hint of orange marmalade.

This must be one of my top favorite IPAs I've tried to take notes on. Full disclosure is I'm not a big IPA fan, so I enjoy this one for its sudsiness, attractive appearance, and mellow, aromatic hoppiness combined with a less intense bitterness. From the 22 oz bottle purchased in Washington, DC, so it must travel well.

For Utah beer appreciators, Epic Brewing is a cool breeze down Cottonwood Canyon on a scorching day.

Apparently, this is the first of a series that Epic intends to produce. In any case this one, the Spiral Jetty, begins with a quick rush of soapy foam and a subsequent head; the body is light amber colored and alive with carbonation bubbles. The nose is overwhelmed with the tantalizing aroma of wet straw and rice. The palate is awash with something akin to slug of hoppy grapefruit juice. The mouthfeel strays toward the generic – otherwise this is nothing that will cause alarm or frighten the children. The brewer describes Spiral Jetty as the beer to launch a series of Epics’ hoppy beers. Launch aborted.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Look – light reddish/golden in color, just a tinsy bit hazy, with good carbonation and about half a finger’s worth of foam that dissipates quickly.

Smell – combination of a fruity smell and hoppy. Interesting smell.

Taste – pretty hoppy-tasting, but not overwhelmingly so. It does have a unique taste that finishes it out..something earthy or pine-like, but I can’t narrow it down.

Mouthfeel – pretty well-balanced.

Overall – very interesting brew and good-tasting.

Poured from an inch or so above the glass gives this beer a big off white head that just sort of sits there before slowly receding somewhat.

The IPA is a clear classic honey colored.

Citrus slightly more than floral or piney hops aroma but it seems all are present.

A light citrus hops taste on this medium bodied beer.

A light dry aftertaste with some hints of the citrus hops lingering.

A: The beer is clear pale yellow in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high white head that left a thin film of bubbles covering the surface and a thick ring around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderate aromas of citrus hops in the nose—orange and grapefruit seem to stand out in particular.
T: The taste is similar to the smell with flavors of citrusy hops along with hints of caramel malts. There is a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. No crispness is evident.
O: There is nothing special about this beer but it goes down rather easily.

A: Pours a crystal clear pale golden orange in color. The beer has a half finger tall light beige head that reduces to a very thin layer over the entire surface of the beer with some thicker patches and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant lacing is observed.

S: Overall pretty light and nothing special about the aroma. The aroma is dominated by the hops - mostly citrus with a very light hint of floral hops. There is some light amounts of biscuit malts as well.

T: Definitely the flavor is dominated by the hops but there is a decent amount of biscuity malt flavors as well. The hops are not overly bitter but I can definitely detect the presence of mostly citrus hop with some subtle hints of floral hops.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin/watery and no crispness.

O: Very easy to drink and quite refreshing but not one of the best I have had in this style (even from this brewery) - a pretty average beer. Could easily be a session beer.

Pours a perfectly color for an american IPA. Nice amount of frothy head out of a 22 ounce bottle.

Smell is also nice. Citrus, grassy notes and a little cherry as well. Was excited for the first taste.

But wasn't excited after it. Too much malt, not nearly enough hops for an IPA. Getting some wood, bark notes with a little orange on the finish.

If you're not a hop lover, this might be an IPA you'll enjoy. Otherwise, I'd avoid.

soft amber/ gold color. clear. thin head. fair retention.

hop aroma biggest. soft, subtle biscuit malt aroma. citrus, but other fruits as well, like banana(?).

a little sweet, that gives way immediately but gradually to hop bitterness that build to a quite bitter finish. citrus hop flavors dominate, such as grapefruit and orange. some subtle malt flavor there in the beginning. very big hop flavor.

medium mouthfeel. soft carbonation.

very solid american ipa. the hops are kind of a one note tune, being primarily of the citrus variety, but the way that they are spread out over the palate(aroma, flavoring, bitterness) is very well executed.

A- Half a finger white dense head. Heavy carbonation. Very clear pal golden color. Some little lacing.

S- Some spicy and floral hops, but mostly a grassiness. Not great.

T- Hoppy, sweet and funky. Bitterness and not very tasty.

M- Gloppy consistency but very wet.

O- Pretty bad.

Pours a semi hazy bright orange with a thick bright white head. Lots of grapefruit and piney hops on the nose. Almost full body up front that thins a little on the finish, kind of like bubble soda finish.

Highly carbonated. Breaks apart the flavors a bit. Nice bitter finish. Mostly grapefruit hop wise with some pine and floral notes. Pretty basic besides the highly carbonated body which breaks the beer apart unfortunately. Could make great for a sessionable flavorful beer if it weren't for the bomber format :/

Oh well

This label says to discover the three levels of Epic Brewing: Classic, Elevated, and Exponential. This beer around 5.50 a bomber at least according to Ohio pricing seems fair for an IPA. Pours a clouded orange hue with a bright white head forming thick and leaving behind some even lacing. Aroma has a strong citrus pith accent with white cranberry/apricot jelly notes. Spicy hops, fruitiness, and citrus are the three components I'm smelling during the initial whiff stage. As I dive into my first sip of this "Epic" Spiral Jetty IPA, more citrus rind bitterness, a hint of yeast spiciness, leading to a dry finish. More biscuit malts with hints of citrus pith, turning into a decent IPA. Mouthfeel drying finish with biscuit malt profile even keeled carbonation nice finishing medium bodied drinking IPA. Solid IPA not earth shattering West Coast I must kill for this beer but good flavors and interesting enough to keep my drinking.

Aroma comes off as a fresh, kinda light floral sort of thing. I also get some orange citrus on the back-end of the aroma profile.

Spiral Jetty looks like a great IPA. It is that classic slightly hazy orange/amber with a crisp white head that is soapy in nature and leaves good lacing.

It's defiantly more bitter than malty, however, it doesn't come off as an IPA as far as bitterness goes. The flavor is nice, a sort of light orange citrus with a backbone of orange-like sweetness too. I like the flavors but it just doesn't meet my expectations of an IPA.

Spiral Jetty finishes dry, is on the moderate-high end of carbonation, and has a nice medium body. It's very drinkable and a fairly nice beer overall.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a cervoise glass. No visible best before date.

A: Lots of bubbles inside this copper-clear beer. The finger of white head fades quickly. By the end of the bottle, fairly cloudy.

S: Skunky-herbal hops. Strong, but earthy.

T/M: Tasty! Hoppy, but balanced. The beer is sweeter than expected (caramel malts?). A touch of citrus, a touch of pine, and a creamy mouthfeel. Thick and enjoyable; excellent. A well-rounded, drinkable IPA.

O: A good IPA, but rather malty for the style. Nice, but bready. Still, recommended; I would have another. Epic can be hit or miss, but this is probably a hit, especially for those who are on the fence about IPAs. This is a 'less hoppy' alternative.

Poured bottle into pint glass

A - very clear, able to see through beer with no problems.

S - Citrus smell, with lemon and possibly some coriander.

T - Fresh, smooth taste with a citrus taste immediately and a bit of hops following. Could have used more hops and/or more additions to pack more flavor.

M - Smooth and the flavor lingers, not too heavy or light.

O - Good IPA. Nice balance of hops, but would have liked a bit more flavor one way or another - more hops or more non-hoppy additions.

Bought a 22oz bottle of this as something different. I noticed that this is part of their classic line of beers (others were elevated and exponential lines). My guess is that means pretty tame, unoffensive.

Pours an apricot color with a slight haze. The head is very white and fluffy. Nice head. The aroma is malty with a slight graininess. Modest amount of hop aroma - slight citrus and grass.

Flavor is bisquity with a slight sweetness. Slight bitterness but less that what most American IPAs have these days. I definitely wouldn't call this a west coast IPA. Overall, not bad but not what a hophead is looking for. Maybe this is an entry level Amer. IPA?

Overall, I think my initial thought was correct. This is on the lowest of thresholds to be called an American IPA. It's not a bad beer but the goal is to be unoffensive. Mission accomplished.

Pours a cloudy yellow/ orange with a two finger white head with good retention and lacing. The aroma has light grapefruit, pine, floral hops and toasted malt.

The taste is much like the aroma. Citrus hops are light, mostly grapefruit, but there are more pine and floral hops, with toasted malt. Very unpleasant. Overly bitter.

Medium bodied with decent carbonation and a bitter aftertaste. Not one of the better IPAs I have had. Will be sure to avoid this in the future.
