Notes/Commercial Description:
Hopulent IPA is a big beer with lots of complex malt flavor and excessive hops. This beer will have changes to the grain bill and seasonal hop changes. The character of Hopulent IPA is over the top, too much of everything—a real HOP HEADS DELIGHT!

Release #65. Brewed April 2013, cracked July 2013. One of the worst beers I've ever tasted. The batch was relatively new, fresh, the bottle well handled and kept cool. Poured into a shaker pint.

The nose was straight up orange and grapefruit, strong, but not unusual, though not the complex aroma Epic claims. The taste, however, was like drinking pure hop water. Astringent, cough inducing. Epic writes, "Hopulent IPA is a big beer with lots of complex malt flavor and excessive hops." The reality is that there isn't a hint of sweetness or malts to balance the hops bitterness. Any complexity that might be in there is utterly lost to the pallet destroying bitterness. Now, I'm a fan of long duration dry hopped IPAs, but there's still the need for balance. If you condition the beer for 2 weeks then you better have the sugar content to fortify that flavor. Unfortunately this one doesn't, and as a result it's been dry hopped to death.

It's important to note that the recipe for this beer isn't static. It changes from season to season or with malt and hops availability. That's why this beer has "Release #" associated with it. I have not tried other releases to see how they compare, but man! Avoid #65.

Release #67 with Mosaic hops only. Packaged on 6/4/13 - about 1.5 months old when opened.
Poured into a chalice. Substantial sediment in bottle.

Based on info on the EPIC website, not every release of Hopulent IPA is made the same, especially the release reviewed here. Release #67 uses Mosaic hops only – I now know that I am not a big fan of Mosaic. This beer is not a super hop-bomb by any means. Could use just a touch more sweetness to create a better balance with the hops. Great aroma. Hides it ABV well. A good beer but not complex.

A – Pours a cloudy amber (did not pour sediment) with an off-white rocky head that dissipates quickly to a marginal film, good lacing even with a poor head.

S – Citrus/grapefruit, slight sweetness, floral.

T – Starts smooth with a resinous pithy bitterness in the finish. Pale malts/crackers. Not fruity on the palate like the bottle describes.

MF – Medium bodied, medium carbonation, sort of chewy in the finish.

Epic Brewing Hopulent IPA

Release #61 - Single Hop with Mosaic Hops

I really feel the Mosaic hopped version should have its own listing here as it is quite different from the regular Hopulent in my opinion.

A- pour produces a 1-1/2 finger white head with good retention. Beer is slightly hazy and bright gold in color. Good lacing. 4.25

S- big hit of citrus. Grapefruit, lemon, orange zest. Also some earthy/dank qualities. Malt presence is very light letting the hops shine though like they should. 4.25

T- very tasty. Much like the nose, the citrus and dank oily hops are the most present. Malt is a little more prevalent in the taste providing a graham cracker presence. 4

M- slick mouthfeel. Lower range of medium carbonation and medium body. 4.25

O- an excellent IPA. Dank and delicious. 4

A - pours a hazy amber/straw color that left an generous amount of lace around the top.

S- Smells great, hop hit with pine, grapefruit and mango.

T - Similar to nose, but those tropical fruits are balanced nicely with the hops. Resin with light bitter after taste. Very nice.

M- Easy to drink, light carbonation, light to medium body, boozey not overly so.

O- Nice job Epic, this is one of my favorite beers from them. It has a great hit of hops, that is balanced well with the citrus and tropical fruits. Worth trying. I'm glad I have regular access to this.

On-tap @ Library Alehouse.

A: Poured extremely hazy almost milky dark orange with half-inch white head which yields rings and spots.

N: Pefume of floral tropicals (mango, passionfruit), strawberries.

T: Floral and liquid perfume of tropical hops. Some malt for balance.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Bitter and dry finish.

O: Aroma on tap is wonderful. Very nice.

This pours out in a reddish copper color with floaties with a rocky head that leaves tons of lacing. It was packaged or bottled on 6/4/13 as it was batch #67. Go on the website to find out the date and malt/hops.

Pouring it out the bottle, I could already get punches of the aroma. The mosaic is killer on this. Mango, citrus, huge just dankness, floral. Almost that cat pee that hurts your nose, but in a good hoppy way. Lots of caramel sweetness as well. What an intriguing aroma. Not like many IPAs that I’ve smelled before.

The flvor however falls slightly flat. At first, nothing really jumps out at me. I get pine, a huge caramel sweetness. On the end, you get a good pine bitterness that lingers.

This has a really fantastic medium mouthfeel from the malt.

Personally, I sort of wanted to like this beer. My brother grabbed it from a recommendation from a store in LA. I’m glad it was super fresh at least. And hey, I definitely can’t get this beer in NY.

The most important thing is that the changing malt/hop bill is a brilliant idea. Cuisine has surely pushed towards that. Not only in California, but all over America and the world. You use the ingredients you have on hand and that are fresh and you make the best product you can. I love that philosophy.

In the end, despite the interesting aroma, the flavor falls a bit flat for me to really love this beer.
