Notes/Commercial Description:
Brainless Belgian-Style Golden Ale is has a rich and complex malt flavor balanced with a little bit of spicy noble hops and strong influences of fermentation esters from the Belgian yeast used. Various Belgian like Rock Candies, hops and grains are employed to express variations within the style. Deceivingly drinkable, some liken theses ales to Devil sneaking up on you, so consume responsibly.

Poured into a snifter. Release #17, 8.5% ABV.

4.0 A: Opaque bright yellow orange color. Just under two fingers of frothy white head. Retention is average and a decent sized ring of lacing is left.

4.0 S: Bright peach and apple fruitiness with perhaps a touch of banana esters thrown in. Hay, wet grass, and apple orchard funkiness. Earthy and mildly spicy hops. Yeast gives a mild breadiness as well as notes of pepper and clove.

4.0 T: Really tasty. The peach, apple, banana meshes well with the earthy undertones - hay and apple orchard. Pleasantly spicy with pepper and clove featured. Earthy and spicy hops. Pretty much the same as the nose.

4.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Spritzy and lightly creamy. Good here.

4.0 D: Epic impresses again. I had the Brainless and Cherries and thought it sucked, but it seems like every new batch, they get their act together a little more.

Bottle purchased at the brewery a couple weeks ago, a generous gift from Dave's road trip case-o-bombers he gave me. He says it was a cool joint.

A: Nice golden straw glows underneath a small white head that sticks around for quite a while. Minimal lacing.

S: Soft and mellow Belgian yeast and malt, hint of spice and cereal grain.

T: Some dark fruit esters, Belgian yeast and bready malt, mild zesty spice, coriander. Nothing overpowering, well blended flavors.

M: Nice carbonation, smooth and buttery finish, some alcohol presence.

O: A solid Belgian style ale, definitely a more approachable, entry level offering as opposed to a true Belgian like Duvel. Everything is there, just slightly toned down.

Clear gold with a small white head leaving decent lace, hampered by draft perhaps to some degree, but nevertheless clearly not emblematic of the style.
Fruity, estery nose, a bit phenolic, a little wood/stemmy hops, lightly herbal.
Taste is heavily phenolic, a little hoppy, some bitterness.
Light, dry mouthfeel, a little oily.
Eh, average duvel clone. Forgettable.

On tap at Mohawk Bend in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear honey gold with an off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thin streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, spices, yeast, and banana aromas. Taste is of grain, banana, and spices. There is a yeast aftertaste and slight alcohol kick after each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good Belgian style ale with a very nice aroma.

A - Poured out a hazy, golden-yellow color with a one-finger, white head of bubbly foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled fruity and slightly funky with a nice grain aroma.

T - It tasted very spicy and yeasty with a touch of fruit sweetness. Nice backbone of caramel and grains.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry, clean finish.

O - This is a really tasty Belgian-style ale. I am impressed with my first beer from Epic.

Served on draft.

Arrived a clear straw yellow with thin fizzy white head.

Smells extremely malty. Lots of biscuit going on with some banana character.

The taste is very malty almost to the point of being chalky. There are notes of clove and banana from the yeast but malt takes center stage.

Overall I enjoyed this beer. It is more malty than other Belgian Pale Ales I have had but that's good with me. It definitely drinks easier than a 8.3% beer.

"Brainless? Why yes, I think I'd like to try that. It seems like a lovely beer. Even a lifestyle to some, perhaps."

Batch #16, 22 oz. bottle fills up a pair of silver-rimmed Tulips of Darkness. This seems like a fitting beer after a heavy dinner of mashed potatoes, steak, & mushrooms. The pour girds the name: golden, indeed, though the name doesn't mention particulate solids. Nose is nice, gently spicy Belgian yeasting, soft hops, lots of sweet candied sugar & shot of earthiness.

Brainless Golden Ale is a good solider to the style & doesn't quite live up to the nose. The sweetness floods out the delicate niceties apparent in the nose; too much malt. Spiciness does assert itself somewhat & saves the experience. Crackles with pepper, green apples, & vague spices. Earthiness & hops on the nose break up & go MIA. Nice & crisp, & the mouthful of cane sugar makes this a nice sipper for a sweet tooth.

Good brew, solid Belgian Pale. That's all.
