Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: JohnGalt1 on 06-10-2010

A dark, full-bodied and drinkable beer, Galloway Porter highlights rich roasted chocolate and coffee-like malt flavors and aromas. It has a very mild hop addition so that the chocolate malt flavor can shine through.

Picked this one up at a Utah state liquor store on the way to San Diego last month, as the price (less than 4 bucks a bomber) was right. Poured a dark brown color with a nice big light brown head. Aromas of chocolate, toffee and roasted malt. Medium bodied and slightly astringent, with flavors of chocolate, roasted malt and toffee.

Appears dark brown with a medium sized tan head.

It smells slightly of toffee, chocolate and coffee.

It tastes much like it smells. There is a nice toffee sweetness that is balanced with a nice roasted malt flavor. There are very mild hints of coffee and chocolate present. Pretty descent flavor: it is stereotypical porter.

It has medium carbonation.

The drinkability is good about average for they style. I made it through the bottle quite easily.

Overall a nice tasting porter though it is uninspired in my opinion. It's worth picking up though if you feel like a classic porter.

Picked up on a nice clearance rack. Happy to give it a shot. 22 oz. bomber split with my wife.

Pour is black & moderately foamy. Nose is rich, lovely chocolate & a dose of roast. Nothing wild but damn appealing.

Galloway Porter peaks with the nose & falls off quickly. Chocolate remains the dominant actor, & there's roast, but the hop strike really clashes with the roast. The hops are earthy, almost herbal, & I never drink tea with my Giradelli. Because that's weird. And then there's a lactose shot that adds to the confusion.

This is a beer that's having an identity crisis, & I'm not shrink. It's a mish-mash of different things that taste good apart, but the combo is off-putting. Decent enough, but based on the nose, this could have been a contenda.

A - Orange-brown light through center of glass with a very short tight

off-white head

S - Very mild toasted malt, hint of cocoa

T - Light but okay to start; mild toasted malt and cocoa. However, there

is a bitter tinge in the finish

M - Mice thickness with okay coating. A lot of tingle on tongue and

O - To mild for this to be picked over most other options

Poured into a pint glass.

4.0 A: Black color. Three fingers of pillowy beige head. Retention is a little better than average and a moderate amount of lacing is left.

2.0 S: Unfathomly dry. Bone fucking dry. Roastiness and a weird tangy twanginess. Needs a bit less attenuation. Like cocoa powder. Not a fan.

3.0 T: Roasty and grainy. Dry, but reasonably dry this time. Light cocoa powder again and a touch of caramel. Not great, but not horrid. Pretty much average.

4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Quite creamy for what it is. Good here.

3.0 D: Average, drinkable, worth a try but not a rebuy.

Pour: Deep reddish-brown color. Two fingers of tan head that dissipated quickly and left some lacing on the glass.

Smell: Aroma is big on coffee. Light roasted malt character underneath. Nothing really exciting.

Taste: Very bland front end with a very thin malt presence. Bitter black coffee and burnt bread back end. Not impressed.

Mouthfeel: Thin and watery with medium carbonation.

Drinkability: It drinks like dark, black coffee, which is a drink I just do not like.

Final Notes: The malts need to be kicked up and they need to do something about that burnt bread taste in the back, that's just not working. Sorry guys, won't be coming back to this one.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Reviewed live.

A- Dark brown color with a very thin cream colored head. No retention or lacing. Not great looking.

S- Coffee and grassy, surprisingly light smell for a porter.

T- Coffee and chocolate, wood tastes. Not great but not bad.

M- Smooth and creamy. Best part of the beer.

O- Nothing excels with this beer, but nothing is absolutely awful. The appearance has stuff to work on though.

22oz. Bomber
Classic Series
$3.29 ea.

Pours a dark brown/black color, some carbonation, little fizzy tan head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, slight chocolate/toffee/coffee notes. The taste is malty, slightly sweet, with some chocolate/toffee notes. Medium body. Would not buy this beer again.
