22 oz bottle poured into a tulip. 7.9% abv, Release #27

A: Straw colored body, slightly hazy. White colored head builds fast and quickly recedes to a thin film of tight bubble son the surface, with a white ring and lacing on the glass.

S: Belgian yeast scents abound on the nose: white pepper, cloves, lemongrass, and a hint of green apples.

T: Follows the nose. Slightly malty up front with a quick transition to the yeast flavors of spices, pepper and cloves, that hold all the way through to the finish. The apples are more notable in the flavor than aroma, but not excessive. Finishes clean, with minimal after taste.

M: Light body, with a gentle carbonation. Body is dry. The tartness of the apples is present but again the apple character is not overwhelming.

O: If you never read the label, you'd think this was just a high-quality saison, with a slightly more fruity character. The apple character is definitive, but not overwhelming. It complements and enhances a very high-quality example of a great style. Great beer, maybe even greater because it comes in such small batches you have no choice but to savor every sip.

22 oz bottle poured into a tulip.
8.4%, Release #30

A - Faint haze forms through the pale yellow beer as it's tight stark white head fizzles out to a ring of bubbles below a dotted ring of thin lacing.

S - Super dry classic Belgian saison yeast billows from the glass with extremely potent clay, white pepper, and lemongrass spiciness. Notes of clove, a drop of lemon oil citrus, and the faintest hint of Granny Smith apple skin pokes through to round out the beer but for being named Sour Apple Saison, there's not much sour apple there.

T - Almost a direct copy of the aroma, Sour Apple Saison's flavor is spice heavy with a clear focus on the Belgian yeast with little of the sour apple emerging through the spice. Lemongrass citrus and a peppery kick overtake the faint notes of green apple skin.

M - Light effervescence prickles the tongue gently while it's light and very dry, moisture-robbing body finishes with a slightly hard feel. A big gulp reveals a little more green apple tartness like taking a big bite from a fresh, chilled Granny Smith as this beer doesn't even remotely express it's higher alcohol content.

O - The name had me overly excited for this mash-up of sorts and while Epic has crafted a wonderful Belgian-style saison, it's far from the sour apple proclaimed on the label. So much so, in fact, that had this beer just been labeled a saison, sour apple may not have even crossed my mind. It's a very good beer but it's title creates false expectations.

Clear golden colored ale with a small white colored head.

Smells mildly spicy and sour like a granny smith apple. Slight honey scent. Fruity with a strange mint aroma.

Starts out dry with a licorice flavor. Mildly tart and fruity there is a clove and licorice flavor here. Mildly bitter but not as sour as I had hoped. But this has one damned strong clove taste to it and pretty much dominates everything else. Sour spiced apples with too much clove that is what this tastes like.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall this is a tasted it once don't need another bottle beer.

App: Gradient golden hue, almost like that of cider. Very thing head with little to no lacing.
Smell: Peppery, thin aroma, almost like that of wintergreen. Overall unpleasant.
Taste: Not as spicy as expected from aroma. Has a good, crisp tartness to it, but overall not a lot of saison kick. Lingering acidic bitterness like that of a granny smith peel. Complex and unpleasant, fading to a sort of artificial twinge.
Mouth: Thin and almost watery. Medium carbonation, and very light on the tongue like cider.

Poured from a 24oz bomber, into two glasses of the pokal shape, this beer is a beautiful on style hazy yellow.

Smell, straight outta the gate I smell garbage, not knockin it but it took a minute to get my sniffer right. After you get over the garbage smell I do smell sour apples with clove and ginger in the mix as well.

Taste, Is definitely on par for a sour saison, it has the lacto sour and the up front, and mellow saison in the middle with more garbage for the finish.

This is an ok beer and im glad i tried it it cut the heat from my spicy spaghetti and meat balls.
